Nick, I’ve spent the majority of my life as a Journeyman mechanic at GM dealerships and I have to say that watching you work brings back memories of working on Cadi’s. You know exactly what tools you need to be quick. Very nice work, and thats not easy to find these days.
thanks for showing how to do this in the bay. everyone else seems to drop them for this but honestly I don't see how it's that necessary with the wheel well pulled out. not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's quite a bit of work. thanks for the documentation
@@CarMechaNick I wish mine wasn't. Just got it a month or two ago not knowing about the oil consumption problem with these. What I get for not researching beforehand (and letting the girlfriend pick the car). Lessons learned I suppose.
If you find a good mechanic, he can do a rebuild in the car. They can make it 150k rough miles. Seriously with these oil pressured timing components and direct injection, you have to get the services done if you want it to last. Clean that carbon! 😁
@@CarMechaNick I mean I've done a few timing belts and some odds and ends, replaced a clutch in a DPS6 so I figure the chain ain't too far out of reach. Bit nervous about pulling cylinders and honing the cylinders out though
You're just over thinking it. Take your time, enjoy it. Does it run? You may need to check if you bent your intake valves if the car won't run. Usually when it jumps time to a crank no start, chattering all to hell, typically I'll have to replace all the intake valves.
Am I the only one that hates looking up this job just to see everyone skipping over everything.. slow down and give me a walk threw with what tools I’m going to need to do this job please
Hey there , I watched ya video and it was very helpful for me replacing the timing chain on my 2012 equinox ltz , I used the Cloyes kit . With everything said and done i replaced it and put all back together , correct torque of all components and it fired up, i let it run for a bit all sounded good , drove it around for a bit and im getting codes P0016 + P0017 , any help on how i can resolve these codes?
So I’m changing my timing chain on my 2010 Chevy Equinox 2.4L and I got the black colored link the one between the yellow ones lined up on my Intake Sprocket but my other black colored link will not align with the exhaust, what’s wrong?
It's hard telling really. You could set one yourself, just to be preventative. It could cost more than a simple timing job if you go too long. But usually the timing components get loud
Not sure if you are still active, have a leaking cover figured I should do the chain and guides along with it since it has 120k and I hear slight chain slack. Haynes has torque specs I believe, any other tips? Ordered a water pump found a AC Delco for 45$ figured I'd just go ahead and do it while i'm in there too.
if doing this at home on a malibu, do you just need a 2x4 & jack under the oil pan before you unbolt the engine mount? How many inches does it need to be lowered to clear the long bolt on the timing cover?
Nothing crazy. You can replace just the primary yes. May not last very long if all the oil passages look like shit. Change oil frequently and still replace if that's all you see broken.
@@CarMechaNick Chains/guides looked good with just the valve cover off. only slight slack that went away when turned. Changed just the tensioner today and P0016/P0017 went away! Going to do an extra oil change and hope they dont come back
Had this one jumped timing? Looking at buying one that was repaired after supposedly jumping one tooth. I know they’re interference engines. Is it likely that a timing jump didn’t damage anything or at the least that if it had I’d know for sure?
I know this is old and not sure if you do strictly these 2.4's but I figured it's worth asking. I replaced the chain and tensioners, cam sprockets/phasers are tightened up and other videos say to turn the crank 720 degrees to make sure there's no interference and to verify timing stayed good, yet my crank sprocket is skipping teeth. After two revolutions at the crank everything is off by two teeth. I went and replaced the crank sprocket thinking that was the issue, yet it's still doing it. Seems the intake cam sprocket holds some tension when activating some valves, causing the tensioner to get pushed back. Then snaps forward causing slack to get thrown down to the crank. If you see this comment, any idea wtf I'm doing wrong or what could cause this?
@@CarMechaNick yes I did. And the crank sprocket is 23 teeth, and the cams are 46. From other things I read the same links should like back up with the markings. After two revolutions. Not only that I can visually see it skipped at the bottom when I manually turn the crank. I believe the cams are still timed together, and possibly even the crank but I can't count the links between intake and crank due to not being able to see behind the head/block. Looking at the crank marking though it does look to still be in the 5 o'clock position after 2 rotations. But I'm just worried about the chain skipping. I've also read that oil pressure assists the spring in the tensioner, so maybe starting it up once assembled with stop the chain skipping.
@@CarMechaNick I didn't count the total chain links of the whole chain, so maybe you're correct about them not lining back up. I'm just going off things I read or seen in videos. Lol. I'm almost positive it's skipping down low, but maybe I'm just seeing slack then no slack as well as noise from the water pump and assuming it's skipping, it sure looks like it is though. I'll try to verify if it's actually skipping by marking a few links when the slack shows up. Thanks for the response btw.
@@CarMechaNick links are 30 when I like everything up. After a few spins it's 31.. so it jumped. No clue why. I'm tempted to just see how terrible it runs 1 tooth off as there doesn't seem to be an answer for this anywhere.
It will not run good. I don't know why other than its not holding tension... it should only slightly want to pop when rotating the timing, caused by the head. Did you replace the actuators? Not the solenoids but the actual gears?
Damn, I wish I found this video beforehand. I took the engine out and replaced the water pump and timing chain but unfortunately there's still a knocking sound that goes in and out while idled and when accelerating. When accelerating its lacking in power until youre at a cruise control speed. What do you think the cooperate could be? bad tensioner?
That's unfortunate. I've seen issues with the rockers before but rarely with these. I'd honestly hate to give you bad info, I'd have to see it. Any codes or anything?
