When Nature kicks in with adrenaline, your assailant deserves everything he/she gets. Be ruthless. Make them rue the day they decided to attack you. Gouge, kick, bite, stomp, kick groins, and slam their ugly heads on the concrete.
My parents taught me to fight dirty. Never instigate a fight, but make sure you finish it.
And I put this into practice with a school bully, who, for unknown reasons , decided to taunt and abuse me. I ignored the words, but I knew she was working up to an attack, and one lunch time, WHAM! She came from behind.
I still relish that day of over 60 years ago. She'd never expected someone to fight back, probably because nobody ever had.
I pulled out some of her hair from the temple area, which hurts like hell.
Then threw her to the ground and rubbed her face in gravel. How she screamed! Music to the ears.
I told her if she ever bullied anyone again, I'd kick her head in. She ran off howling...,and never came near me again.
      Mum and Dad were right!

I agree a lot with that, it's very useful, I brought out my inner monster several times with men bigger and stronger than me,and it works perfectly,I told them " you can't do anything to me because I'm going to kill you first " I repeated that several times looking with no fear at all at their eyes, with a very angry voice , and I was convince totally that I will kill them before they could cause me any harm. I didn't had weapons,or training,I'm an small size woman, but those guys looked at me terrified and paralyzed, because they knew that some way some how I was ready to kill them and they knew it.

There are 3 concepts I learned which I found useful: 1) Hard-on-Soft: Punches are hard, so hit soft targets (such as the throat). Palm strikes are soft, so hit hard targets (such as the skull or the jaw) and you won't injure your hand. 2) Life Support system: Strike the weakest areas on the opponent: Eyes, throat, carotid arteries (side of neck), ears (clap on them) and groin. 3) Diminished Fighter theory: Your opponent is at 100% health, and you must wear him down, so strike multiple times.

@@JTB-di8yj Cup your hands a little bit and slap their ears (cup + slap = clap). By cupping your hand you're creating a little pocket of air, and when you slap someone's ears, that air can go in their ear canal and rupture their ear drum. Clapping on someone's ears is disorientating, which allows you to do follow up techniques, such as eye gouges, knees to the groin etc...

For sure. Not related to self-defense but there was a woman in Phoenix just this week that was hit by a car while she was crossing the street in the crosswalk. Dashcam video caught the event and had she not been looking at her phone, she would very likely not have been hit. Unfortunately, the driver did not stop. Fortunately, her injuries were very minor.

Thank you Jason, for all the information you generously provide. Here are some suggestions those who are no longer able to escape by running or are less capable of defending themselves than they once were, may find useful.
Three principles. If a person cannot stand, they cannot fight. If a person cannot breathe, they cannot fight. If a person cannot see, they cannot fight.
If you are attacked by more than one person, attempt to 'herd' them together so it is difficult for more than one to attack you at the same time. (they get in each other's way).
Joint manipulation does much to compensate for a lack of strength.
Try to grab a finger and as forcefully and quickly as you are able, bend it the way it isn't designed to bend. Even if you are a 98lb weakling and he is a 300 lb weightlifter, this will break the finger, but you need to put everything you have into it. The same is true of all defensive moves. Give it all you got!
You can also put one hand on top of your opponent's wrist, the other underneath their elbow and as quickly and forcefully as you are able pull down on the wrist while lifting the elbow up and out. This will either break their elbow or dislocate their shoulder.
A 'knife' hand to the middle of the throat is more effective than a fist to the throat.
The further your opponent's arm is extended, the weaker it becomes. The less you extend your arms, the stronger they are.
It would be good to find a 'workout friend' so you both can practice these techniques.
I also suggest carrying a heavy cane with a u-shaped handle. This can be used to maintain distance by FORCEFULLY thrusting it into the chest or abdomen, the 'hook' can be used to manipulate their movements and balance or jerk a foot out from under them and of course the shaft can be used to strike--preferably hard surfaces such as the head, shin, etc. The farther down on the shaft you grip the cane, the harder the blow will be.
A cane is the only weapon one can legally carry anywhere.
Of course it is best to try and avoid 'dangerous' areas and, as much as possible, travel in groups and remember, when it comes to defending your life or the lives or others, there is no such thing as a 'dirty' move.

I love the blooper "you drive the same friend as my car drives!"
I pay attention to my surroundings, however, I have this ability in which I can feel bad energy. Walking home one afternoon I felt really bad energy coming from behind me, so I started walking in a silly manner, skipping then turning around to access my situation. There was a guy about 20 feet behind me. So, I kept up the goofy walk as I increased my speed and as soon as I could turned towards my destination which was blocked from his view by some bushes then ran like hell to my gated apartment complex.

00:31- Where is that chart from?
There was this punk in traffic, who turned in front of me from the wrong lane. I beeped, he gave me the finger, then we started playing bumper tag. Mistakes on both sides here. When traffic stopped, I got out and he got out, (more mistakes, I could have gotten shot)(or him), and we stood face to face. He had a steering wheel lock on hand, I had nothing. He's yelling: "Bring it on, bitch!" So I kicked him in the head! (He wasn't that tall) This wasn't actually the best thing to do, but it just came to me in the moment. He falls into a moving lane of traffic, and trying to get up, he keeps stepping into his baggy pants, falling down repeatedly. Me and the other drivers were just kinda staring at this spectacle. That was about it, and he quit being physically aggressive, and just resorted to running his mouth about how badazs he was. I said: "I already knocked you down, what else you want?" He was just a rediculous piece of isht.
As I've gotten older, I've calmed down a lot, and try to be as peaceful as possible. My temper has always gotten me into trouble. So much so, that I was my own worst enemy. Insecure people make their own problems, attract trouble. "Be cool, fool!"

My last sketchy situation was a stairwell at a parking garage. Oddly enough I used the stairs because I didn't want to be isolated and situationally detached in an elevator. One guy was below and there was a guy quietly keeping pace with me from behind and up the stairs. I saw the guy down below look at the guy behind me. I guess the look was to call it off because nothing happened. I was aware of the guy behind me and the guy in front of me... I looked right at him. I think they were looking for easier prey.
My point, be confident and show no fear and you will be surprised at how well it works. To gain self-confidence Jason has real-world simple advice that works.

Excellent Video. I would also recommend people not wear sandals or flip flops too. Wear shoes with laces or at least sturdy slip on shoes. It's easier to run in and you won't fall either. I personally think 90 percent of self defense is awareness and prevention. The other 10 percent is physical actions. I personally practice simple attacks. Also train with weapons. Simple strikes with hands, elbows, knees,, and feet are fine.

I’m not an expert but I’ve wondered this question myself for worry of older people around me or myself when I get that age. So far I came up with things you can do. I read of an incident (you can Google it) of a young hoodlum who broke into a home of an elderly couple. Luckily the burglar was unarmed but he attacked the the elderly man anyways when the old man discovered his presence. Long story short the old man was an ex-boxer. The young burglar got his ass beat and went to jail. So what I learned from that story is this: 1. Learn to fight. Skills trump age.
      2. Work on your endurance. You’ll be surprised how out of shape younger people are especially those that don’t workout much. If you can learn to build endurance you can outlast your opponents if you couple that with skills.
      3. Learn Dow. What’s Dow you ask? It’s a chemical company that makes mace (one of them at least). My point is arm yourself with something. Mace or if you’re comfortable learn to shoot and get a gun. You can even buy a collapsible baton and carry it in your pocket. A tactical flashlight is another self defense tool. Some people get a tactical pen but you need some skills to learn how to use that.

It's interesting that I intuitively developed the same self defense methods you show on here.............In my early 20s I worked with a WWII vet who was a hand to hand instructor who taught me how to really throw and punch, where to hit etc. So my vocabulary is small but very affective......I've sparred with a few guys with Black Belts or 20 years younger and much more buff than me and they've tappedo ut immediately and never got a punch in, much to my shock. That was when I learned a few solid basic moves, assessing the threat and preparing mentally and physically, resolution, focus, action, precision, ferocity and heart will win most fights. I equate it to performing surgery...

When I go to an ATM even if it's a drive up > I get out of my car to make my transaction > because I DON'T want the change on a car blocking me from backing out AND another pulling up blocking me in front. I'd be so limited if stuck in my car at their mercy...
I'd be better able > not restricted outside the car.
    Thanks and God bless.

It’s a good video a little rushed , as a person who has taught self defense for 4 decades this is good basic advice . Especially the last three things . 1 yes always starts with situational awareness, even though you just can’t keep the space . We call it urgent combat I have 3 1 plus hour videos on urgent combat training.

You hop out of your car?
Guy approached me in the PL (true story!) and I jumped INTO my car and locked the door.
He kept trying to talk to me (wanted to sell me a cell phone cheap) but I just shook my head at him, as I found my pepper gel in my weak-side pocket. (I have other weapons in my strong-side pocket to use with the pepper gel, which I would never use by itself.)
He made several woofs about how I must be nuts to act that way and he then left.
I waited until he was about 50 yards away before I exited the vehicle.

There is a difference between mutually agreed upon combat and being attacked.
When you are being attacked, you are being forced into a violent situation you did not want.
So, when you are being attacked, the only rule is survival.
You have to be ready to be as ruthless, sadistic, vicious and relentless as your attacker is making you feel is necessary to render them either unwilling or unable to continue the attack.
There is no such thing as "a fair fight" when you are being assaulted. There is no such thing as "cheating" when you are in a self defense situation.
Do whatever you have to do to make it home to your family.

I’ve been in three real fights. One was in Galveston during a Mardi Gras party. This guy jumped me, I slammed him to the ground and hit him a few times until about 7-10 of his buddies pounced me-they had a bat, but my brother pulled me out before the bat hit me and we practiced our sprinting. One was in my house hanging out with the wrong people drinking tequila. Three of them jumped me. I knocked one out after we grappled all over my apartment. The other two I went nuts on throwing pieces of house hold items and a love seat at them. They all ran out. Two out of three of those fights I was jumped by multiple attackers and one group had a bat, Easton specifically.

    • @Just1American1966

Seniors look less out of place with canes. Seek a nice solid one; they do make canes intended for use as weapons.
When physical abilities are compromised, no shame is had by resorting to weapons. OC spray, a tactical pen, or even a firearm, makes a solid option where legal (and even where not.) Once selected, get training with your chosen implement(s.)

At that age, get yourself a gun for self defense, stun gun, pepper spray, or baton that you can use. Self-defense will be in your favor. You have nothing to lose. You may do your city a favor if you eliminate a crazy or criminal. Being elder citizen, the law will be in your favor.

@@Just1American1966 Thanks. I actually carry a cane and know how to use it for self defense. In my youth, I was the only white guy trained by a no kidding Shaolin monk. But, I obviously can't do all the work now. Still, with cane and training in fighting, all weapons, non traditional common items as weapons, I can do well. I am more concerned about seniors who don't have this background and could use tips. Thanks.

If you are going to carry a weapon for self defense / other than a handgun / teach yourself how to use it. Throwing stars can disarm someone entering your house with a pistol , if you have taught yourself to use them. If you don't have it within you to flip a throwing star at someone's face , than Do Not. I was attacked by a guy with a knife once, I found that I could. Having mace does not mean You Will defend yourself. In all cases you need to teach yourself.

I really like the multiple opponents point because in my opinion martial arts, self-defense training, police and security guard combatives, and military hand-to-hand combat training all lack multiple participant training.
In police and security guard work, going one-on-one is a bad idea. The principle of overwhelming force means that when empty hands are used to subdue, teamwork between several officers produces that overwhelming force. Going one-on-one is sportsmanship--and sportsmanship has no place in law enforcement.
You gave a vivid visual example of three-on-one defender though I'm going to call it out because experienced street thugs position themselves so that they can coordinate their attacks and attack from several directions at the same time. That takes a finite amount of time to set up--the dynamic edition is for a single attack to initiate the swarm attack and the rest pile on. Defensively, the defender, too, can use numbers. Someone has to watch the six! Flank or rear attacks on the aggressor work.
Military hand-to-hand combat is mostly (when not exclusively) one-on-one with the exception of riot control formations. This will sound insane to the untrained, but when KILLING sentries, one-on-one works (preferably with overwatch) but when the goal is a living prisoner, two or three taking down the sentry and hauling off the prisoner. It's far easier to carry a prisoner with helping hands than to lug 150 wriggling or limp pounds of prisoner on your own. Note that kidnappers will either be significantly larger than their victims or use a team AND weapons to carry out their dirty deed. Knocking down a victim and rolling the victim up in a carpet takes teamwork and surprise--and a carpet.
Teamwork is needed even when firearms. In 1969 Rich Davis was confronted by three armed robbers in Detroit--Davis had been practicing on multiple close-range targets. "Shooting to Live" (Sykes and Fairbairn, 1942) trained Shanghai Municiple Police constables to fire magazine-length bursts into a single target--if modern American crime stats are accurate, about 60% of civilian gunfights are one-on-one and the remainder have two or more attackers. Neutralizing one attacker and running out of ammunition might work--distributing firepower takes practice and some planning. Davis had a six-shot .22 revolver and he trained to put two bullets into every target and then shift to the next target without pausing to admire his handiwork. Infantry tactics are combining fields of fire so that more than one weapon covers every enemy on the battlefield--the fields of fire overlap so that each enemy is neutralized, so that when one of your guys goes off-line (reloading, weapon broken, your guy is a casualty) that part of the defensive perimeter isn't a hole. The problem is that even in this the American military doesn't drill having concentrated fire and distributed fire by fire teams and squads (and other small units).
I got lucky in the National Guard on machine gun ranges I ran--the "talking guns" technique pairs up two machine guns with overlapping fields of fire that take turns polluting that bit of real estate with flying lead. Short bursts from each gun in turn confuse the enemy as to the machine guns' locations. When one team announces "OUT" or reloading or something, the other gun picks up rate of fire to compensate while the other gun gets back in the fight. I'm annoyed that police don't practice this on the range--I understand resource limitations, but it's part of fire discipline. A criminal with a gun has to be taken out of action before that criminal shoots someone--two police shooting him are far more likely than one to put the criminal down, and in return the criminal has two police that must be addressed--or the criminal can surrender.
Weapons are used--often to intimidate the victim into compliance, but sometimes the crime goal is inflicting "grave bodily injury" and worse. A strong-arm (unarmed) mugger is far more likely to demonstrate that he means business by sucker punching the victim than a robber with a gun is to fire a shot--why attract attention unless the goal is to kill the victim? Getting compliance means demonstrating overwhelming superiority, and with some weapons that means inflicting immediate injury in order to show "I mean business!" Surprise is a weapon. Numbers are a weapon. Being bigger, or pitting male against female, that's a weapon. A club or other impact weapon might be used, but knives are cheap, easy to acquire, and effective even without a lot of experience or training. Training is "synthetic experience." Using a noose around the neck is not common. For a while, "num chucks" were popular because those whirling sticks were intimidating--truth is that without a lot of skill, that weapon is more dangerous to its user. If 40% of criminal attacks are "two-plus" against a single victim, that would make numbers a common enough weapon that practice against multiple attackers should be equally common in training.
These four self-defense techniques should be part of everybody's skill set. I chose multiple attackers (and defender teamwork) out of the four to amplify because multiple attackers are very common. Ask Andy Ngo about his encounters with AntiFa.

My best friend and I were in an unfamiliar bar, to us, to meet a couple women. I was standing facing the DJ and my buddy was on a barstool behind me ordering beers for us. Next thing we know, he was sucker punched and simultaneously I was smacked in the head with a beer bottle! Neither one of us went down and we both immediately were trying to figure out who these two people were as the bar was packed shoulder to shoulder. OBVIOUSLY they ran the heck out of the bar after seeing that even suckering both of us, we might not be people they want to fight! LOL! Come to find out the woman my buddy was there to see had a psycho ex in the bar and his friend is the one who hit me with the beer bottle. We ended up going to a motel with these ladies and they more than made up for what happened to us!
