Looks great, and I will definitely try it. Quick question though -- will there be another Mr Black contest this year? I noticed you're advocating for making coffee liqueur at home, so are you done with Mr Black now? What's the story?
@@MAKOBITE I love the team at Mr Black and their liqueur! I haven't been in contact with them for some time so there are no plans to host another one of my Coffee Cocktail Challenges at this stage.
A grasshopper walks into a bar. Bartender says "Hey, did you know we have a drink named after you?" The grasshopper says "You have a drink named Steve??"
Grasshopper is one of those crazy coloured drinks that are actually quite good. It's not very complex but it's just like a grown-up milkshake that's difficult to say no to. I'm gonna have to try the improved version now!
I had a happy accident making a grasshopper one day. Instead of grabbing the clear cream de cacao, I mistakenly grabbed the bottle of cream de coconut. It turned our really good, and we named it the Island Hopper.
The club where I bartended back in the late '80s had three ice cream drinks on their list, the grasshopper, the tumbleweed, and the pina colada. The grasshoppers were surprisingly popular, and we made ours with 1.5 oz. green creme de menthe, 1.5 oz. light creme de cacao, 2 oz. of half 'n half, and a large scoop of ice cream. No ice. Blend and serve. Definitely a hazard for brain-freeze, some drinks should be sipped rather than chugged. Great video, Steve!
It’s the best. Trust me. I put in 1/2 Oz as I like the bitterness so much. In my area of the US not many booze stores sell it however whereas Frenet Branca is ubiquitous.
I love fernet, so Jeff’s version is gonna be such a fun variation to try. Definitely gonna try subbing out thé crème de menthe for Branca menthe to really embrace that combo of earthy and minty.
I'm going to have to try this one. I made grasshoppers last winter, after infusing my own creme de menthe and creme de cacao, and they were delicious. I think what is basically a milkshake version will be even better. :D
I have an atomizer with fernet and essentially do a "rinse" of the glass before pouring in an Alexander or Grasshopper. Similar effect without the hassle of adding the ice-cream.
Seeing the (original) combination of liqueurs does have me wondering if it has the same kind of taste as the After Eight chocolates... 🤔 If so, I would be a big fan! ♥
Made this it was excellent, but you wouldn't want more than one. This is being added to my cocktail list for sure, perfect as a dessert cocktail. Be interesting to try a brandy alexander like this.
The Grasshopper "format" is stupid easy to mess around with. A personal favorite is subbing the menthe with either triple sec or st. George pear liqueur. (I add coffee bitters with the orange). I'd also suggest using a dark cacao
The fernet add a menthol note that goes so well with mint and cuts through the fat of the cream and ice cream. These are great like once a year, LOL! Fun!
I had a birthday party yesterday and we used the improved grasshopper as the signature drink! Everyone LOVED it! Thank you so much Steve for uploading this video cause the drink was perfect Edit: we also changed the proportions a bit, more creme de cacao, less fernet branca, more salt, and more ice cream
@@barbatruc7114 Campari and Fernet Branca are completely different. If you can get your hands on another herbal bitter liqueur (like Cynar or Unicum) maybe that's worth a try.
Love the videos and your Book! You have significantly upped my cocktail game!! One recommendation... please go back to adding the recipes to the descriptions. I go back time and time again when I want to make a cocktail. I do not always re-watch the video. Having to find the spot in the video for the recipe is quite tedious and TBH it becomes easier to just find it elsewhere online.
After a good meal you may ask yourself "do I want a drink or do I want desert?" If the answer to that question is Yes, make (or order) yourself a grasshopper.
Could Fernet Menta be a sub for Creme de Menthe? I've been avoiding getting a bottle of Menthe but I finally got a bottle of Tempus Fugit dark Creme de Cacao. Unfortunately I haven't found many cocktails I've enjoyed with Cacao enough to get another bottle. This Grasshopper is one that makes me want to get a bottle of Menthe to use with the last of my Cacao.
Don't discount the addition of the vanilla from the ice cream affecting the flavor of the mint as well. I'm going to try JM's version tonight, but as it's a nasty day outside today, I don't feel like venturing out for ice cream. Instead I'll try adding some extra cream and a little vanilla extract or maybe even some Licor 43 to approximate the ice cream.
Hahaha. I do have the branca menta but I think the fernet would work better.. branca menta would still be great but I think you would want more than a barspoon.
I was in a situation where I had to explain to Aussies/Kiwis what half and half was. One didn't hold back, 'no wonder you all are fat if that's what you put in your coffee'.
Hi. I tried the ice cream version and I would say it is disgusting. I love sugar and ice cream am it it was sickeningly sweet. For reference I was using McGuiness crème de cacao and mint.

This one is more complex... the fernet makes it pop!

I like your ingredients list on the side of the video...really helpful
One of the bars I went to served the grasshopper with a mint and chocolate cookie also called a grasshopper.

The addition of one dash of chocolate bitters to the original 1:1:1 recipe makes all the difference (I use Fee Brothers Aztec Chocolate Bitters)
Nice. Now I'm curious about swapping the Fernet Branca out for Branca Menta.🥂
It’s the best. Trust me. I put in 1/2 Oz as I like the bitterness so much. In my area of the US not many booze stores sell it however whereas Frenet Branca is ubiquitous.

And, just got your book. It is such a beautiful production.
Thanks so much John! Glad you like it.

Steve, That looks really good.
It’s a great drink! The fernet takes it to the next level

I’ll go with the original version - I love all equal part cocktails like this one and the paper plane.
Wow gonna have to try this, thanks Steve!
Do it! 🙌

Grasshopper 🦗 a guilty delicious dessert
Absolutely
The restaurant is pronounced Two Joes btw :)
Steve, what do you think of substituting Branca Menta for the Fernet Branca? Upping the mint even more.
Hmmm.. I think the fernet would work better but haven’t compared. If I used branca menta I would want more than just a barspoon.
Why not go all the way and use Brancamenta? Looks delicious!
Could do..

Consider skipping the creme de menthe and replace with Branca Menta. Should make the drink more potent :) The Branca Menta Mojito is also tasty.
Need a frozen version! Basically a mint chocolate ice cream lol
It’s blended with ice cream and pebble ice so it is frozen :)
Always take a pic of the side recipe but the cocktail building animations make my lose focus on the video side

"Cocktail" is a very broadly applied term these days, but that's a milkshake. XD

Infuse some vodka with peppermint candy and it would be way better.
Milk, cream and ice cream: isn't it a bit redundant?
why in every video u starts with words "hard room welcome back"?
