    It seems an astonishing reflection on the British tank industry when one notes how archaic this tank was for the time in which it was designed in: the poor shape of the frontal armour compared to the German big cats, the T34 and even the Sherman; the slab-sided turret, as mentioned, again compared to the German tanks; but absolutely astounding is the power to weight ratio. As somebody mentioned in the comments: the King Tiger was under-powered at around 12 hp/tonne. This thing had less than 7hp/tonne! How anybody could think this would result in a viable tank, boggles the mind.

"She" also broke down 2 Chieftain's trying to tow "her" out of the arena one day and they got stuck with over 150 tonnes of steel that could'nt move out of the arena.

    There was maybe a feeling that, during the war, a low-risk design was a good option, but that doesn't excuse the engine. Along comes peace, and the Centurion came out on top, also with the switch to the 20-pdr. Using the Centurion turret suggests the turret ring had the same diameter, so I suppose the Black Prince could have carried the 20-pdr, but the safe bet wasn't needed.

    I generally believe if the Black Prince was fitted with the Royals Royce Meteor and possibly a reworked five speed transmission + gearbox, it could have been a very good tank. The whole design seems promising and with the churchill style, along with suspension, you could be garenteed it would probably be able to reach these hard to reach places several tanks could not, it just seems a great shame they didn't just put a little more effort into it, but as David Fletcher says the war was over and there just wasn't a need for a tank like this when we had other tanks that could do the job just as good or even better. But it is just one of those things that you wonder if it had a bit more time taken to finish the tank properly, it may have been something to not look back on. 🤔

    Might have fond a niche if it was 2 years earlier. As it was, it was obsolete while still in development.

    Funny enough, despite the underwhelming engine power, the BP tank would have been the very first serious threat to the German King Tiger tank. It had superb protection and excellent firepower.

    I can’t believe this was developed when the is-3 was. The is-3 and other tanks like the Pershing were light years ahead of this.

    • @danb4900
      @danb4900 5 лет назад +4

      The Pershing was really no more ahead of anything the Russians had at all, both of them equally worthless at taking out an IS-3.

      That's the main problem with the Black Prince, they started work on it far too late. The project should have been started in 1942, the earlier the better, rather than the end of 1943. The main reason they didn't was that during 1942 the Churchill was viewed as a failure or, at best, a short-term interim design that was only going to stay in production until a better design was available (I think this is where all the up-armoured Cromwell-derived designs came from).

    • @JohnyG29

      We were also developing the Centurion, which was better than the Pershing or the IS-3.

      The M26 Pershing had more than its share of problems, so much so it was replaced in combat in Korea by cast off Shermans revamped from stores and scrap yards until rebuilt as the M46

    I wonder if they considered stretching the Bedford engine into a flat 18 which given the other length increases would have required a relatively modest increase in length to stretch the engine bay to accommodate it.

    Note to the spirits of British tank designers of the period. "If you can put the Seventeen Pounder into a medium tank, you do not put the same gun into the heavy tank; it's silly. You put the Twenty Pounder into the heavy tank, and that is only if you can't fit the Thirty Two Pounder. If it's a small enough gun to fit in the medium tank's turret, it's too small for a heavy tank."
