  • Hello! Welcome to the 4th episode of Comfort Stitching. In this video I share an exciting channel milestone, my current works in progress, and some updates on what I've learned (and not learned) about the "Bridget Power 1840" sampler that I've been working on. I'll show you my most commonly used tools, some stitchy kindness, as well as some stash enhancement, and I round things out by reading a short passage from a journal written by the Trappist monk,Thomas Merton. Thanks so much for watching!

Please don’t ever apologize for taking us along on your history journeys. For me, this is the reason I stitch. The connection to a work someone else has created, especially those from a different time or place, provides a special meaning. I stitch so this form of history is preserved.

Jackie, I'm from Londonderry in Northern Ireland and I know that the Power family, of which there are many branches were a very wealthy, well connected family in the 18th and 19th century. I feel certain that you are right that Bridget was not from a lower class family. From the first time I saw this sampler, I thought that she must be connected to the wealthy Powers. I love your Flosstube and look forward to each one ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this information!!! It’s the first time anyone has suggested that maybe, just maybe, Bridget could have been from a family of means. Do you have any first names to go with the surname of Power for me to look into? Or any references to recommend?

    • @sharonbruce6639
      @sharonbruce6639 Месяц назад +4

@ComfortStitchingJackie I googled Power family Ireland and it suggests they were of Norman descent....the name was originally Le Poer, which meant poor but it states they were by no means poor! They seem to have be centred around County Wicklow and County Waterford but no doubt members may have left Ireland to live in the States and Canada. I don't have any names but I will check with my brother who, as well as being a priest, is also an Irish history fanatic! I'll get back to you with any information I obtain 🥰

@@ComfortStitchingJackie I have not read all the comments about Bridget but I am as intrigued about her history as you. One fact I’m interested in is where the antique sampler was found and made its way to Gigi R to be reproduced. Is that information in the chart pak?
I was very interested in your discussion. I’m aware that this design was also released by another designer which also intrigues me. And your strawberry!

What a wonderful way to start my Sunday
This day will never come again is so profound
I’ve learned to stop the busyness and take a moment
My dear friend who died too young shared this during her last week on earth
Stop….make a memory of this moment as you travel through life
It will sustain you during the hard times and bring great joy
So I try to make a memory each day
Whether it’s the blossoming of a flower the rain as it travels down the rain chain
    Giggles of my grandchildren
The dawn of a new day
    A vivid sunset
So thank you for the memory

Oh my, what a wonderful episode this has been. With the wonderful strawberry pack from Floralegum and your adorable acorn to your beautiful stitching and research on its history. Your passion for your stitching shines through in each episode. The variety you included in this episode shows how much thought you put into your flosstubes and I would like to tell you how much this is appreciated. Your mindfulness meditation was the perfect ending and will remain with me for sure. These words touched my heart and gave words to what I have felt but not been able to put the words to myself. Since a diagnosis of leukemia turned my world upside down, this is often how I have felt but without the words to describe it. I now have the words 😊 Thankyou

Irish resident here! A small point that's actually a very important point - a lot of folks in the republic don't use the word famine when relating to that period of Irish history. They'll say "the genocide", and rightfully so, if you look into the history of what happened both leading up to and during the period of the 1830s-50s. While it's true that there was a natural blight, tenant farmers were forced to continue to export large amounts of crop to Britain, a crop that had been forced on them to be their only food source, or else lose their homes. Whatever the circumstances of the landlords, they didn't starve to death like the million farmers who did. I felt it important to mention for anyone reading, who might now be interested in Irish history.
    Wonderful stitching as always!

I try to remind myself of that aspect of life as often as I can. Our experiences may be very similar from day to day or year to year, but they are never exactly the same. I try to remind myself to be present in the moment to appreciate what I have and that I'm blessed, even when it doesn't always feel like it. That was a very good meditation for us all to absorb and remember.

I like your videos and all the things you share. Your stitching is so beautiful. You are a beautiful lady and your kindness shows through. I would venture to say that your thought about this day never will come again is not really widely thought about. I thought about it and I cried. It hit me very hard. Love you and take care

Thank you for another fantastic flosstube. Your stitching is beautiful and your videos are so calming and relaxing to watch/ listen to.
Thanks for sharing your stitching tools too. I only recently discovered the star detailer thanks to another flosstube and it has been so useful; I’m not the only one that plays thread chicken then! I’m also a paper chart/ highlighter stitcher who cuts and sticks together charts but I’m naughty and do this to the original!
I’m very happy that it is currently strawberry season here in the UK; they are the perfect summer treat.

I've been stitching on a Keeper of the Pins piece by Brenda Gervais in the #2 Nurge hoop while watching you. I agree! The Nurge seems to work for me as well. Lots of tomatoes with a Strawberry tucked in here & there. Takes me back to my Mom's red velvet tomato pincushion that sat perched on her sewing table. I lost her recently...funny how little trinkets become so dear with such warm memories, when once taken for granted. I agree...the fewer moments we have, the more precious they become. Awareness of that is key! Your videos have been so educational, both historically, spiritually, & stitchywise. I look forward to each one. Thankyou for sharing, so vulnerably(sp?) your creative spirit with us all. ❤

Love the strawberry kit!! Your needle book and acorn are wonderful, lucky ladies who received them!! Thanks for sharing all the special things you use when stitching, a lot similar to what I use! I fold my pattern down to where I am stitching, the I use a magnet on the fabric so it is right there and I can see it, then mark where I have been! Thanks for what you share!

Good morning wherever you are dear Jackie,
Today i find myself happily stitching on a bookmark for a birthday gift.
I have to share with you a little surprise i saw last September, just exactly when i needed to see it.
My father planted strawberries and sold them with his homemade birdhouses. One of those birdhouses was at the 1st retreat I ever went to! He gave me some of his berries to plant and I never enjoyed seeing them come to fruition as I moved away from that house and could not take them with me. I lost the birdhouse he had give to me as well. 😢
    He passed in summer 2021.
Relatable is the tale of how on the day of my baby granddaughter's funeral one of her sisters was excited about the strwaberry plants her mother had planted beginning to bear fruit. There were 3 & her mom told her to share but, she defiantly popped that little handful into her mouth and gobbled them right up.
What delightful treats you have to share good wishes to all.
Your velvet acorn and wool leaf needlebook are inspiring. Now I want to rifle through my stash to see if I have something suitable for a similar small accoutrements.
    🪡🍓🌰🍂❤️‍🔥🕊

Oh wow, huge congratulations on your 7k follower milestone, you have a USP with your mindfulness which is why we all love you. Many of us craft for our own mental health whether we know it nor not. Strawberry ‘This day will never come again’, so very true and profound as you say, this is perhaps why I find it hard to look back at photographs, they always remind me of a time gone which I find sad, even if those people are still in my life. 💗

Your flosstubes really have a profound effect on me. The quote “this day will never come again” left me saddened. I am feeling so content stitching and watching you. I’ve had dinner, the dogs are napping, hubby is watching tv, everything is so peaceful. I know I will have a similar day in the future, but it saddens me this one is almost over. Thank you for the tip on the Colonial needles and Bohin scissors. I had to go to Etsy and Amazon and order. I have a pair of Gingher stork scissors I use but would like another pair. I loved the look into Bridget’s life. I, too, am always wanting more information. Happy stitching! P.S. I love a good strawberry.
