  • Hello! Welcome to the 4th episode of Comfort Stitching. In this video I share an exciting channel milestone, my current works in progress, and some updates on what I've learned (and not learned) about the "Bridget Power 1840" sampler that I've been working on. I'll show you my most commonly used tools, some stitchy kindness, as well as some stash enhancement, and I round things out by reading a short passage from a journal written by the Trappist monk,Thomas Merton. Thanks so much for watching!

Jackie, I'm from Londonderry in Northern Ireland and I know that the Power family, of which there are many branches were a very wealthy, well connected family in the 18th and 19th century. I feel certain that you are right that Bridget was not from a lower class family. From the first time I saw this sampler, I thought that she must be connected to the wealthy Powers. I love your Flosstube and look forward to each one ❤

Thank you so much for sharing this information!!! It’s the first time anyone has suggested that maybe, just maybe, Bridget could have been from a family of means. Do you have any first names to go with the surname of Power for me to look into? Or any references to recommend?

    • @sharonbruce6639
      @sharonbruce6639 3 месяца назад +4

@ComfortStitchingJackie I googled Power family Ireland and it suggests they were of Norman descent....the name was originally Le Poer, which meant poor but it states they were by no means poor! They seem to have be centred around County Wicklow and County Waterford but no doubt members may have left Ireland to live in the States and Canada. I don't have any names but I will check with my brother who, as well as being a priest, is also an Irish history fanatic! I'll get back to you with any information I obtain 🥰

@@ComfortStitchingJackie I have not read all the comments about Bridget but I am as intrigued about her history as you. One fact I’m interested in is where the antique sampler was found and made its way to Gigi R to be reproduced. Is that information in the chart pak?
I was very interested in your discussion. I’m aware that this design was also released by another designer which also intrigues me. And your strawberry!

Thank you for sharing your time and talents. I love the acorn and the leaf needle book. I am making needle books, yo, yo’s for a quilt, putting together a hexagon quilt and stitching a cross stitch by Lori Holt. I am a monogamous stitcher when it comes to needlework. Love the velvet strawberry. My son has planted several kinds of strawberries this year, I had no idea there are so many different kinds of strawberries. I’m 67 and learn so many new things each day, we’re never too old to learn something new or historical! Love your RUclips videos. ❤

Please don’t ever apologize for taking us along on your history journeys. For me, this is the reason I stitch. The connection to a work someone else has created, especially those from a different time or place, provides a special meaning. I stitch so this form of history is preserved.

What a wonderful way to start my Sunday
This day will never come again is so profound
I’ve learned to stop the busyness and take a moment
My dear friend who died too young shared this during her last week on earth
Stop….make a memory of this moment as you travel through life
It will sustain you during the hard times and bring great joy
So I try to make a memory each day
Whether it’s the blossoming of a flower the rain as it travels down the rain chain
    Giggles of my grandchildren
The dawn of a new day
    A vivid sunset
So thank you for the memory

While in my sewing room or quietly stitching on the porch….i love my favorite subscriptions….you are certainly one of my favorites. I purchased the Bridget Power 1840 pattern. Will order threads and this will be my winter project. Thank you for introducing us to so many new designers. Our area is limited to cross stitch and so many depend on the internet for purchases. I've been stitching on a Keeper of the Pins piece by Brenda Gervais in the #2 Nurge hoop while watching you. I agree! The Nurge seems to work for me as well. Lots of tomatoes with a Strawberry tucked in here & there. Takes me back to my Mom's red velvet tomato pincushion that sat perched on her sewing table. I lost her recently...funny how little trinkets become so dear with such warm memories, when once taken for granted. I agree...the fewer moments we have, the more precious they become. Awareness of that is key! Your videos have been so educational, both historically, spiritually, & stitchywise. I look forward to each one. I try to remind myself of that aspect of life as often as I can. Our experiences may be very similar from day to day or year to year, but they are never exactly the same. I try to remind myself to be present in the moment to appreciate what I have and that I'm blessed, even when it doesn't always feel like it. That was a very good meditation for us all to absorb and remember.

I reached the end of your video. Yes, this day will never come again. I thought back on those days I shared with my loved ones and I felt sad but grateful to have had those moments with them. Then I thought of those days that were not so good and felt a bittersweet relief that those days will never come again and hurt that I can't erase them from my memory. 😢

We can’t erase a memory but we can release attachment to it. It takes conscious practice and forgiveness. Be well.

Love strawberry in plural 😉 I have some planted although hadn’t had luck growing them. I have some strawberries I’ve stitched and those you showed will make a beautiful add to mine. Absolutely delightful! I enjoyed hearing all of the researching into Bridget Power. It's so true that we meditate on people or sentiments as we stitch. I'm not stitching Bridget, but my imagination has developed a back story thanks to your research. The strawberry kit is on my wish list since you shared it in the shop tour.

Thank you for sharing your research on Bridgette. I find it so interesting! And for sharing your stitching notions & stuff. When I was first married, I use to put my needles in the couch arm. But one night my husband leaned down to kiss me hello & stuck his palm with a needle. Oops! 🥴 After that I started leaving my needle in my fabric. 😂 Love the quote, This day will never come again. ❤ strawberry

Thank you for a lovely time. As I sat listening to the meditation at the end, I spied so many beautiful pollinators on our hydrangeas (it's been a banner year for the butterflies): two hummingbirds, our honey bees, so many little and large butterflies including our TN state butterfly the zebra swallowtail. I've never seen this many at one time like we have this year. I've been working on In Praise of Pollinators and it's so fitting for a day like this! And strawberry!

Irish resident here! A small point that's actually a very important point - a lot of folks in the republic don't use the word famine when relating to that period of Irish history. They'll say "the genocide", and rightfully so, if you look into the history of what happened both leading up to and during the period of the 1830s-50s. While it's true that there was a natural blight, tenant farmers were forced to continue to export large amounts of crop to Britain, a crop that had been forced on them to be their only food source, or else lose their homes. Whatever the circumstances of the landlords, they didn't starve to death like the million farmers who did. I felt it important to mention for anyone reading, who might now be interested in Irish history.
    Wonderful stitching as always!

Oh wow, huge congratulations on your 7k follower milestone, you have a USP with your mindfulness which is why we all love you. Many of us craft for our own mental health whether we know it nor not. Strawberry ‘This day will never come again’, so very true and profound as you say, this is perhaps why I find it hard to look back at photographs, they always remind me of a time gone which I find sad, even if those people are still in my life. 💗

I finally found some time to sit down and stitch and watch your floss tube video without being interrupted. Congratulations on your 7500+ subscribers I have been thinking of trying 56 count fabric I love stitching one over one on 40 count so I think it should be ok. I love all your projects you’re such an inspiration I love your calming voice, you totally get me in the mood to stitch. 😂 I’ve never made a strawberry but I plan on making some along with some pears. And now after seeing your velvet acorn I’m going to try that too. I live in the mountains in California an hour from Yosemite National Park and we have so many acorns I can use the top and add the velvet cushion like yours. It would be perfect for placing my needle when I’m working on my needle turn appliqué.

I don't have a strawberry but it would be fun to try and make one. I also enjoyed seeing the tools that you use. I have been in search of a magnifier lamp that would suit my needs and will look into one like you use. Fascinated about the speculations surrounding Bridget Power's life. I am still collecting my supplies for this stitch but I already feel a connection with it. Thank you for that.

8/13/24. Jackie 🤗. “This day will never come again.” Thomas Merton. Thank you.😢. What powerful and lovely reminder at the close of your time spent sharing your journey with all of us. I needed to hear this. I will be reflecting on it in the days ahead, and for whatever days I have to continue this life. I am grateful for each morning when I waken and for whatever I might do on any day…some days it is not much, and other days are quite full…I am giving myself permission to do what I wish to, and to give myself grace if I am content, not meeting the expectations of others. I enjoy life on my schedule, doing my favorite things. One of which is watching lovely floss tubes that stimulate my mind and my creative activities. I am so thrilled to spend time with you, I enjoy your historical search for background on Bridget and her stitching. You do not need to apologize for sharing this fascinating search, nor for the time you spend sharing everything with us. I could listen to your wonderful calming voice, all the information you give us, the things you show us for however long you wish to share. I tell everyone to watch you, the best you tube in my book.
Additionally, thanks for all the items you shared. I ordered the lamp last week, and so far I am loving it! I need to get out another light to have on my other side, I have a couple different ones available. But the magnifier is a wonderful light, and I was thrilled with the affordable cost, it is going to be the best purchase to enable my stitching. I have been using a Nurge hoop the last 2 months, mostly size 2, I think I will try the 3 for a larger project I’m starting. I’m not a monagamous stitcher, and I’m still attempting to organize all the wips 😅. Do you remove your hoop every night? I have been attempting to do so, but sometimes forget.🤦🏼‍♀️.
I have rambled enough for tonight, I am so thrilled to have an accomplished, new stitchy friend, that shares information, haul, notions; but more than all of those tangible things….shares herself , her feelings, and her heart ♥️.
I love absolutely anything strawberry 🍓. And I can’t wait to find your petite needles 😮 I received one in a kit, but didn’t know where to purchase them. Jackie, thanks for being a wonderful part of the flosstube community. Peg 💛

Thank you so much, Peg! 🩷 I’m glad that the magnifying lamp is working for you. I wouldn’t be able to stitch without it! I do remove my hoop after I’m done stitching for the day. I have left it on my work once or twice but I always loosened it considerably.

Jackie, thanks for such a delightful and thoughtful video. I hope you get more info on Bridget Power. The top part reminds me of flowers I'd see needlepointed on antique fireplace screens. Your wise words at the end hit home in a very real way. I used to be a monogomous stitcher like you, with sometimes two patterns. A couple of years ago I got a scary medical diagnosis. All seems ok now, but one doesn't know how many days they have. Life can change on a dime. As a result, I began this year starting a number of patterns from my stash. I'd like to know that in whatever days I have (it could be many years), that I at least had the pleasure, experience and excitement of starting patterns I've wanted to work on. And now to the subject of food, the strawberry kit looks lovely, very kind of you, and congrats on reaching 7500. Your cute little acorn and needle book are so pretty. Take care, and happy stitching.
