You don’t need to follow the crowd! I follow you because you don’t! Even though I love several FlossTubes and I know we want to do it all, it’s supremely peaceful to watch your chats and be motivated by your calm inspiration. That said, I am looking forward to the barbaraana 4 seasons. They have long been on my wish list and I love the idea of the different color linens.

When I look at Bridget’s sampler I get the feeling of abundance and wealth. This young girl might have been of an extremely wealthy family, with a chapel in their property, with curtains that closed when the mass ended, living in a home with abundant flower arrangements, who had an extremely talented embroiderer as a tutor.
I would encourage research in convents and their schools.
    Great job Jackie!

It sounds like you are on the right Trac for the Bridgette sampler. How beautiful and interesting it is. Thank you for sharing all of the beautiful linen you have acquired. I am getting ready to jump into trying to stitch on it. I am starting with a 28 count Irish linen. Wish me luck! Until next time...Happy Stitching.

The message I’ve gotten from your quest to find Bridget is that all artists no matter the genre leave a part of themselves in their work. I’m thinking how surprised Bridget would have been as she stitched, that a conversation would be had about her in the year 2024! I remember seeing this pattern in online shops and never really could see it well. I didn’t understand it. Seeing your stitching brings it to life. It is beautiful. While I am Catholic, I’m not Irish, but yes the symbolism makes sense to me. Thank you for taking the time to search for Bridget and giving us some information about her. I hope you find her full story. What a beautiful gift she gave the world. What a beautiful gift you continue to give us.

Thank you so much! Bridget has taken me on a journey that I never imagined going on. And I’m not done yet! I’m pleased that so many people have been reintroduced to her by seeing me stitch her sampler. It’s a prime example of not judging a book by its cover. 😊

Jackie, thank you!! Another wonderful flosstube, I love how you are true to yourself and you are 'you'. Will be praying for a quick recovery for Archie, love how you accept and acknowledge his needs. A HUGE thank you for acknowledging how frustrating some of these monthly clubs can be- I have tried for quite some time for floss subscriptions, bag clubs, you name it. I guess I was late to the game, sadly, I almost left it ruin the joy of the stitch for me. After a self chat- I convinced myself to enjoy DMC - wonderful color selection, a better price point, and color fast! Believe it or not, I even have some DMC linen floss ( that experiment didn't last long- for DMC). Thanks again though, you are the first flosstube person I have heard acknowledge this and I appreciate it. Thanks for the positive energy and for all you bring to the table.

Firstly, I’m sure other stitchers have reached out to you about pulling one thread from your card using your needle. If not, it’s a simple fix: you just need to make sure all of the loops are cut on the opposite end of your floss skein from the one tied onto the card. If you don’t, you end up with an unholy mess! I’ve just discovered you, and love your videos. I’m thrilled that you’re stitching Bridget Power so I can enjoy her vicariously! xx, Lee

What a wonderful video! So glad you are finding out about Bridget. I will have to take a look at my chart again to see the symbolism of Catholicism. I am Catholic so the Tabernacle information was very interesting. You were even mentioned on the Mondays with Mary group on Facebook this past Monday in regard to Bridget and the Colonial needles. Love seeing Archie and sending all the good vibes for his surgery and recovery. Love the ending of the video, thank you for sharing those thoughtful moments at the end. Happy to report she can still run and jump up at 12 yrs old! We did buy her stairs for the bed and of course we have to sometimes lift her. I wish you and Archie the best. If you haven't already ask vet about LED light therapy after Archie's surgery. It really helps the healing process.

I really love your videos. The content and format are wonderful (and calming). I'm particularly enjoying the Bridget Powers detective work. I started this sampler about a year ago. I live in Australia but my Dad was Irish. I've never visited before and hope to one day in the next few years with my brother. Our mum died five weeks ago and my brother whom is 59 today lived with her his entire life. She did everything for him until the day she passed so not only is he having to learn to live without her he is essentially learning to live. He has heart problems (pacemaker and pulmonary hypertension) but is keen to visit where our Dad is from. We sent some his ashes over there to Dublin and want to find where they are dispersed. By you delving into the origins of Bridget I feel I'm learning more about my Dad and they we lived. His mother (my grandmother) was born in 1893. You've touched on times that my great grandmother would have lived through. I haven't done any geneology and don't even now my great grandparents names (sometimes forget my grandfathers names as both my mum and Dad lost their father's before they were five years old - interestingly Dad's father died of TB, my dad's life was akin to the story Angela's ashes, not sure if you have read it and my dad was traumatised reading that book as it hit too close to home. In fact I don't think he finished it). Anyway, enough rambling, thank you again. It's so wonderful to see your video's pop up. I save them for a (semi) quiet time- three kids doesn't give me alot of quiet time lol, but I do so enjoy your work. Thank you so much. oh, and I always used to see this sampler when I started it as a theatre curtain also.

Being an amateur genealogist, I understand your frustration, Jackie. I have hit a brick wall with my husband's grandfather who should be easy to find but no luck. He left the family when my MIL was a toddler and we have looked and looked for him!! I will never give up and you should not either.:) I am Catholic and our tabernacle is veiled....the colors change for the seasons and special days. A red veil signifies the feast day of a martyr. So I agree that this little girl was up on her theology. You have discovered a lot in my opinion and it was very interesting.

I find your research very interesting. Love it.
When you mention the curtains I startedcalling my childhood memories of Sunday mass rituals.
In countries like Portugal, Spain and Italy, when the priests starts the communions they go to the alter where they keep the communion bread in little window/cubicles, normally covered with drapes/curtains (and on those countries they're normally purple)... In bigger churches, were they don't use the alter so often, the priests cover the chalice where the communion bread is on with also a type of cover (some cases something like a velvety purple beanie for more formal ceremonies or a a neddleworked white linen).

Although I'm not much of a sampler fan I find your videos and particularly your Bridget Power research quite fascinating.
I couldn't help but nod along at the interpretation of the veil in your piece. It echoes Christian symbolism of the veil that separates us from God the Father being torn apart at Christ's crucifixion (Matthew 27:51). There are still many churches to this day in India that have plush crimson curtains veiling the altar.

Hi Jackie! I’m loving your quest to find Bridget. I don’t know if this angle has come up before in the search, but could it be possible she became a nun? With so much Catholic symbolism in her sampler, maybe she was stitching her vocation. I do genealogy, and one thing I have learned is that new information comes to light all the time. So what may have been a dead end to others looking for Bridget in the past, maybe now a road will open. As clearly, yours did with the rose border! All the best in your continued stitching and searching of Bridget!

Thanks so much, Ellen! I really appreciate your input. Yes, the suggestion of Bridget becoming a nun has come up. I have no idea how to research that, however. It’s probably in church records I just haven’t delved into that, yet. Thanks again! 💚

Hello Jackie, I am a catholic and if you visit churches in Central América, specially those in little towns as poor as the congregation is, those drapes are always very important to decorate churches, different colors to let know people of a specific celebration throughout the year. I’m not saying at all that she is a Latin, not at all but it seems that the custom to put drapes in the altar comes from ancient times. Love all you shared

I love your videos so much! Thank you so so much for making them ❤ I am still thinking about “this day will never come again” from your last video. It really resonated with me and I am so invested in your Bridget journey.
You mentioned briefly that you store your WIPs by draping them over an ironing board. I’m curious about your thought process behind this and do you worry about any dust settling on them? I’d love to see the set up.
It feels nosey to ask but I love seeing how and why other needleworkers do things, and I have been thinking a lot lately about how I store my projects (which is in the plastic zip bags from Amazon) and am looking for a new way. Thank you again for such a great video, can’t wait for the next one 😊

Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’m having fun making them!
The two projects I’m currently working on are what I have draped over the ironing board. That way they are not folded up all the time. I have a flour sack dishtowel between the two and another one covering them to keep any dust off. A couple of other projects I have stitches in are folded and in project bags.

I’m no help with the Irish aspect of Brigit’s sampler, but I can help with the Catholic aspect. As a graduate of a Catholic grammar school, we all knew the vestment colors and floral symbols by the 4th grade.
We were taught by nuns, and went to church before class - Monday through Friday. The tabernacle was covered by curtains and opened for the Eucharist.
I grew up in an Italian German neighborhood and lots of us learned how to embroider, sew, knit and some learned lace making and tatting at young ages. 13 is actually pretty old for needlework. I was 4 or 5 when I started learning about textiles.
Best wishes to you learning more about Brigit.

Good luck with finding more information on BP. The first time I saw it, I thought of a stage and theatre. I agree with you, there is wealth behind the design and stitching - very much fitting with a Reverend's daughter. The 'curtain' isn't your standard opening curtains which draw back to the side with the top ties holding it in place. I also think the curve of the altar top is not standard either but whether this is 'interpretation'.

So in listening to you again today I was thinking Bridget may have been in a convent. I went into a convent at 14 (I didn’t stay to become a nun) but Catholic families frequently gave a girl to the convent and a boy to become a priest. I love your floss tube and have said a short prayer for sweet Archie

Hello Jackie, I was so pleased for you about your research on Briget Powers. It was so interesting. I am amazed what you have found out. What a gorgeous sampler. I do think that you should contact the Cathedral in Waterford. The Catholic Church is really big on its history, There well may be information that they would have. I can also confirm what Kathleen has said about the curtains that are in the alter area of the sampler. The church, in its various festivals, makes much use of curtains and coverings and capes, etc. Sometimes congregationalists stitched things for the embellishment of the church. Although Briget's sampler may not have been for the church embellishment, as you have said, she may have been educated at a convent. Please keep up your research. It is utterly fascinating. thank you so much for sharing as well. I so enjoy it.
I also love the Antoinette Sampler. I too love the many different alphabets. I am quite drawn to French samplers. They are intricate. I have started one of Reflet de Soie. the chart is so small in its print that it is hard to read. So I haven't worked on it too much. I do want to get back to it because I love it so much. I think it would be good to put on a computer program to make it easier to read. Just have to get such a thing... But as you stated, Sampler September is coming up, so perhaps I will come back to it.
Thank you for your video. I so enjoy your sharing and stitchings.

It’s so interesting to hear your update on Bridget Powers! For Sampler September I’m going to pick back up a few samplers that I haven’t worked on for a few months. I’ve been stitching Xmas ornaments through July and August for most of my stitching time but my fingers are itching to get back to samplers. I would like to finish the one for my dad as this year was his 40th anniversary since he passed and I’d like to finish one of my HATS samplers or MFE samplers.

I so enjoy your channel because you are comforting and unique in presentation. I truly hope you don't follow the crowd of other flosstubers. I watch a lot of Urbex explorers that find abandoned mansions and houses in Ireland, France,England etc. They've discovered several alters often very ornate and very similar to the one you're researching. There's usually a painting or two of priests and higher clergymen in the home with some evidence that they were family members. It's quite possible this could have been the case in this instance. I do hope ancestry produces something as it is quite interesting.

I’m commenting in your #5 flosstube to the content in your #4. I’m not sure if you go back to previous videos after a while to read the comments or not. Thank you for the suggestions you gave for videos to watch on RUclips. If you don’t mind, I have some suggestions of my own for you to try. I watch the following channels for their creators’ attention to detail, their skill and the joy they take from it, and the love of their work that comes across loud and clear on my screen. For sheer awesomeness (don’t know if that is a word), I watch these joiners/carpenters: New Yorkshire Workshop, AT Restoration and Carlrogers. There used to be a fab German furniture restorer as well, but I can’t find him any more and the name of the channel was three big German words which I can’t remember. For fun, I watch these excellent furniture makeover channels: Modern Makeovers and Transcend Furniture Gallery (love!). I hope you give New Yorkshire Workshop a try (especially the one where he recreates a curved handrail for the house that he is restoring) and Transcend Furniture Gallery (just love my girl Angie). Thank you for deciding to make Flosstube videos. I am enriched by watching and listening to you.
