I find it funny how zed was like “zombie’s have been oppressed and discriminated against for generations” and Addison is like “yeah well my blond hair is lighter than normal”.
I mean, yes, but it is important to acknowledge that every person's difficulties are valid and important, even if some are more serious than others. Addison held a lot of fear of being discriminated against for her white hair and that is a totally valid fear, especially when you remember she is only a teenager, which is an age where appearance often matters a lot (way more than it should). Of course, Zed's issue of being discriminated against and oppressed is far more serious and significant, but that doesn't invalidate Addison's issue. They are separate issues that should not be compared, both valid but different.
@@Sentariana Of course! No one is saying that Addison's insecurities are invalid because they totally are, but literally everyone has some insecurities about their appearance. Especially teenagers. The problem here is that they try to make it like her hair problems are just as important as Zed's discrimination and suppression, which is even more problematic because because he is supposed to represent a minority
Addison is supposed to represent assimilation imo, her parents force her to hide something that really shouldn't be a big deal because it's "different", and it impacts her sense of identity. Her hair color being made a big deal is irrational yes, but that's the entire point.
I love how they say “Zombie phobic” like know in horror movies when a zombie is chasing someone if they run and scream it’s somehow the same level as systemic racism.
This movie is saying that zombies inner instincts need to be suppressed in order to be considered people, because they'd kill everyone if they weren't forced to conform to "normal" society. Am I cherry picking? Maybe.
I hate when a minority group is portrayed like this. The fact that they're literal flesh-eating zombies without this special wristband that makes them civilized actually validates all the racism coming from the humans. Zootopia has a similar problem, with the racism being based on the historical fact that predator animals used to be bloodthirsty monsters who couldn't help but kill and eat sentient prey, thus validating the prey animals' wariness of them. Real racism isn't justified, it's meaningless and arbitrary and it's based on practically nothing. There was a Star Trek episode where a race of aliens was introduced that had half of their face black and half of their face white, but there was racism based on *which* half was black or white, a distinction that is portrayed as meaningless and trivial, thus highlighting how stupid and pointless the racism is.
I agree with you on this movie, but I feel like Zootopia is a bit different bc it's not as obvious which group was supposed to be a stand in for white people and and which group was supposed to be the minorities. I always thought the predators were supposed to be white people, but I've heard other people say they always viewed the predators as being the minorities. That confusion creates its own problems, but I think it only has the Zombies issue if you view the predators as being the minority group.
@UConqkNRKCd41Y-lprP0BQ1A I mean I saw it once when I was like 12 so I wasn't that deeply analyzing it, but I definitely thought the predators were supposed to be white people and I've known other people who thought the same. It wasn't as blatantly obvious as you might think, especially for a kid. Because in the beginning of the movie they say that predators were the bad guys, I assumed that was code for them being the racist white people. On the other hand, Zombies might have the Zombies being bad in the beginning but they also say pretty much outright that zombies are the ones being discriminated against. They quite literally have a scene with separate entrances for "normals" and "zombies." There's no subtlety so you're much more likely to walk away understanding the allegory than with Zootopia. But take this with a grain of salt bc I was much older watching Zombies than watching Zootopia.
Agree, when I saw it for the first time I was like “you are saying that immigrants are dangerous and can only adapt to your perfect country if they are controlled?!?!” At least I felt it like that
So I think the person I was replying to deleted their comment but I'm keeping mine for more context bc I do understand the predators were _supposed_ to be the minorities but I still think it can be read different ways, especially by kids. So it's not quite the same issue as Zombies
@@liviwaslost Sadly, Disney couldn't have a character with an actual disability to relate to discrimination. They just had some basic upper-mid-class white girl with gobs of privilege and an unconventional cosmetic look.
Disney has had a history with not being able to make respectful representation of disabled people. Like that one autism episode in girls meets world that made autism look like an awful disease.

So is no one going to talk about how Addison’s hair in the first movie was full on blinding white but in the second movie it was like platinum bleach-blond?
A cool twist would've been that the zombie wristbands were actually completely unnecessary and zombies could live among humans without them, and that information was covered up by years of misinformation and paranoia. Being a 'zombie' could've just been akin to a harmless genetic mutation that freaked people out before proper study could ever happen.
That is actually a line that Eliza says in the movie. She has a theory that they’ve evolved to the point where the Zombies can live normally without the need for Z-Bands.
@@stayuptoolatedog528 which I would take and plus they all had a great reaction to Zed taking off the band BUT it suggests they’re still wild and monsters before they could control it
I have albinism, which means I actually do have white hair. It’s hilarious to me that Disney made this whole movie combating “discrimination” and then they just throw this plotline out there about the girl having a different color hair and it being a really big deal. Like they never addressed the fact that actually people do have this condition and that it has caused marginalization in our lives, not to mention the fact that almost every person with albinism is legally blind and that makes our lives harder as well. All in all, as all the other comments are saying, they messed this up really bad just like everything else, including all of the “racial” groups they coded into this thing. Good music and aesthetic though. I’m definitely watching the third one just to see how bad it is.
Yeah, this movie does anti racism in the most racist way possible, by making the minority groups monster that are actual threats it just undermines the whole point of the anti-racism message. I'm Native American, and the entire werewolf thing is just horrible to me. Like... There is not reparation for the land that was taken, Addison uses the equivalent of, "My great-grandmother was a Cherokee princess" argument to claim her right to the werewolf-hood and just... AGHHHH Calling Indian Coded Characters Animals and Savages and teaching them to be "Civilized" is fucking stupid as shit and I am so scared of what the 3rd movie is going to do to whatever ethnic group they choose next. It mishandled segregation(which I didn't touch on cause every other comment did), mishandled Indian Removal, and I can just tell that they are going to be so unsubtle and horrible with their "Aliens" and immigration and just... AAAAAAAAHHHHHH. I would like to perish.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did a plot around like asian immigration and adisin ends up being a secret alien simply because her name starts with A and all the zombie names start with Z and all the werewolf names start with W. I'm sure they'll handle it just as well as this because depicting a minority group in a movie as aliens invading is a great idea...
@@pastellaura2580 still has a prominent Z sound, although it doesn't start with it. It's an outliar, and it doesn't mean that Addison now has to be a dinosaur instead lol
Fun fact: the dance that the werewolves do with the two poles greatly resembles the traditional filipino folk dance called "tinikling" which makes you wonder why the fuck they included it in this movie
I thought that looked familiar, that's a really bizarre reference Like, that would have forced the actress to do some real training to pull off, and it's to have the werewolves living in the woods of this American town have some Filipino folk dance traditions that she happens to handle easily?!
As a Filipino American who finds these movies super fun, I was way too thrilled about the tinikling showing up for literally no reason in this movie. 😅
The racism allegory falls apart for both of them bc the oppressed groups actually have a capacity to harm their oppressed beyond normal human means. The zombies could go beserk if the wristbands stop working and the werewolves are treated as almost animalistic savages. Minorities irl aren't oppressed because they could be dangerous, its because they're different
Correct. I think for me and I could be wrong is that the messages trying to be portrayed in the songs are then not even used in the movies. It definitely should have used its message better but I also am conflicted bc I like them. But I don’t think it’s for some of, if not the messages it brings. But I could be way off track. I do think the first one had hints that it could be good if it changed A LOT of things but I’m also not a Disney Executive so who knows what they were thinking. Because it could have been a good movie with a even better message but they royally messed that up. But the songs were going the right way, just didn’t make it all the way.
and it's also very "othering", they're different species, but the races that are discriminated are still human, the only thing different is their skin colour
This movie has always rubbed me the wrong way cause it does the fictional racism/otherwise discrimination all wrong; by making it so that the zombies are actual threats, it seems like the "normals" have a reason to be fearful. If you replaced the zombies in the story for bears that can be civil if theyre wearing a funky watch, you can see where the metaphor falls apart. It also uses the female lead as a sort of white savior stand-in where the minority couldnt succeed in the end without her standing with them.
@@jairo.504 no, i get that, but it seemed as though the moment she decided to openly and publicly take a side (at the end of the movie) her friends and family rallied by her side and after the competition things improved significantly for zombies (towns opening up, no more segregation at school, everyone's just hanging out together as though there wasn't however many years of discrimination against the zombies). And all that after just a cheerleading competition. i'm not saying that fictional racism storylines can't be done or even done well, i'm just saying that it requires a certain nuance that i'm not sure disney has
I saw a RUclips comment once that Addison’s real hair should be green instead of white. It kind of stuck with me, because as green hair is associated with being a zombie, it would give an actual reason for her feeling like she needed to hide it. It would also make a genuine connecting factor between her and Zed.
Well the issue with that is that Addison’s whole story arc is that she’s trying to find where she belongs as she feels that she doesn’t fit in. Hence Zombies 2, because that was a big plot point in the first which was unresolved. If they made her hair green, then 1. That just wouldn’t make sense. 2. Her entire storyline would be done within the first 10 minutes of the movie as everyone would make that connection. The thing that sets them together is the fact that they’re both different from what society thinks is normal. Hence how much they like each other & fall in love.
@@stayuptoolatedog528 I think you are definitely right about Addison’s arc, and how she forms her relationship with Zed. But the problem with the movies is that they don’t really establish a proper reason for why she doesn’t feel like she belongs. In the movies, she seems like she is generally well-liked, has a lot of friends, is on the cheer squad, etc. None of that really aligns with the idea that she does not belong. They try and solve that with the white hair thing, but then in the second movie, that never ends up being that big of a deal, so it doesn’t seem to matter that much anyway. I think having the hair be green would provide a much better reason. Because then she would have this characteristic that associates her with zombies, so she would not quite fit with the humans, but would not quite fit with the zombies either, because she is still human. That would make her arc make more sense, because she would then be able to grow to accept herself as other people around her, including Zed, do too.
the thing which annoys me about these movies is that Maddison’s whole character arc is how she “doesn’t fit in” but she literally just has slightly lighter than blonde hair, and then you look at the zombies who have literally been discriminated their whole lives by humans it just makes Maddison seem ignorant and insensitive
there's a lot wrong with the racism allegory here but tbf that's not that far off from in real life if we're being honest. not to invalidate others' struggles but we see folks like that all the time, especially when someone has little/nothing to actually be oppressed for and tries to relate to minorities and it comes off tone deaf lol
Zombies was actually supposed to be a tv show but the pilot didn’t get picked up. So all the weird missing parts make sense. They just needed more time.
The first Zombies movie is so weird because at its core you can tell there was actually a really fun and interesting storyline that we catch glimpses of throughout the movie (especially in that date scene and the scene where Zed's Zband stops working on the football field, there's actually some really interesting implications there) and then that core was ripped apart and buried under whatever the higher ups at disney thought would be better. This story had so much potential and instead we got this. Also Addison is annoying but wbk
If you want the "the oppressed are portrayed by the undead/monsters" actually done RIGHT, read the "Discworld" series by Terry Pratchett where the undead/monsters actually haven't done ANYTHING wrong and are discriminated against simply for being "unsettling". The "undead" revolutionary leader is Reg Shoe, one of the only two zombies in all of pop culture who doesn't terrify me because I have such a horrible fear of them. The other one is Billy from "Hocus Pocus". So yes. I am terrified of the zombies in this movie. Because they actually ARE dangerous and have been shown to actually HURT people. I don't care if they're just teenagers have white makeup and green hair, I fear them. So therefore, the racism message is bad.
Izombie did a better job with a similar concept because it actually acknowledged that the zombies are dangerous whilst still letting them be sympathetic and making you hate the people who’re against them because they go as far as to murder zombie children and torture one of the supporting characters whilst you can still understand why they hate and fear them
Here's the main reason I hate this movie: during all the promotions disney channel kept saying there'd be a special look at Infinity War during a commercial break. So I sat there waiting and waiting, and eventually we got the "special look" but it was actually just a shortened version of the teaser trailer. There was literally nothing new. So I had to sit through this terrible movie for old content, I will forever hold a grudge against this movie. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk
And they also messed up the release date and said it would be coming a week later than it would, but that was actually them just being idiots. That frustrated me so much
Not the fact that it is an allegory for racism and how gross it is that the zombies represents minorities specifically Black people or how the werewolves represent Native Americans?

11:35 I get it, she has white hair, but why, WHY, did they have to make the wig style so horrible? 😭 Like they couldn’t have given her a like a pixie mullet or sumn
In fairness, she probably hasn't done anything with it for a long time as she just was wearing a wig but I wish they would've done it in the second movie and definitely made it more natural. Especially there are people in real life that have grey hair at a young age which can be similar to white hair
What really bothers me is that the first movie implies that it needs a person from the majority to "rescue" the minorities.. Maybe I'm reading this into it but yeah.. It just feels weird
Can we all take a second to appreciate that with all the controversy about "react" content thats going on, how perfect an example of a good transformative react video that doesnt just outright play someone elses content this is?
Funny how they don't make the zombies look like... well zombies. They are just pale with green hair even when they are in zombie danger mode they don't look like zombies. Its odd to make a story with morals around loving those despite appearances or racism/xenophobia ect but then make all of those characters look "beautiful".

I enjoyed the first one with my kids more than I expected. I suffered through the second while they enjoyed it. I think they may be a little old for the third one... hopefully.
I know this isn't meant to be 100% literal, but the wrist bands are the only thing keeping zombies from eating people. Humans have every right to be afraid. I appreciate the message about acceptance though.
@@queerlibtardhippie9357 I- Did we see the same movie? The zombies went feral after their bands stop working. Their skin literally changes, I think. That's more than just them thinking they do.
speaking of lore... if zombies were created 50 years ago at the time of the first film... Zed, Zoe and all the other zombie kids wouldn't have been alive at the time of the outbreak... so... either there's Twilight stuff happening where Zed and Zoe are stuck in their current states OR zombies be procreating...
Kinda reminds me of a short lived manga series called "My Pathetic Vampire Life" where the main character is required by law to continuously repeat his first year of high school because that's the grade he was when he died. He's been doing this for 133 years now. Considering that the government is allowed to kill him if he ever steps out of line really paints a depressing picture of his unlife.
The logic in this movie is so odd; we're reinstating monster laws, which include things like curfews for zombies and monsters not attending prawn, but our school, which a chunk of the first movie was segregated, will still be integrated and we'll let the new monsters enroll in the school too, even though the point of reinstating the law was to keep those people away
i love that when the girl zombie was hacking with the computer, she wasn't even tapping the buttons. look at the keyboard and you won't even see any keys be pressed down.
Zombies: : the movie with the misunderstood protagonist who falls in love with the cool girl and sings a song and everyone loves them and the bad guy says "we cool now"
i think originally this was pitched as a tv show, they even filmed a pilot in 2011 or 2013 idk, the show was gonna be called zombies and cheerleaders, but it didn't get picled up, and eventually got reworked into the movies, i assume because of the sucess of decendants. we're all wondering what addison is, they're saying the third movie should answer questions about that,. i've only watched the movies once i think, but i do like the songs, i have them on my phone
I think the reason it feels really fragmented story-wise is because the original script was written to be a TV series rather than a movie. :) I have a 4YO and she is in love with this series. The 4th wall break drew her right in. I think overall it has a good message with some bops. Also, I have a feeling you missed the last scene in 2 because I know there would've been a reaction to it. 😂
Oh boy! I was babysitting some kids one time (Ages 10, 7, and 5), and I let them watch a movie. They chose Zombies 2. It was terrible. I feel like I've seen a clip of the beginning scene of Zombies, and I hated it. I don't understand why the girl doesn't like her white hair. It's cute. Also, American here. I've never been to prom, but I looked it up, and found the history really interesting. It's too long to put here, but I recommend looking it up.
The main reason why she didn’t like her white hair is because the whole city is supposed to be perfectly planned and everyone looks and acts in a certain way and she is seen as weird for having white hair, so that’s why she is hiding it. It isn’t how her hair looks, just that she looks different and “abnormal” according to that society.
my major issue for this movie is how DIRECTLY they just draw on past real-life discrimination. like. why are there references to border walls and school integration and colonizing traditional land. why. like I don’t mind the basic aesthetic/concept, but they really went all in on the racism allegories and it’s horrific
I really hate that they didn't make Addison a werewolf. She could have figured out her identity with the support of the pack! It was unnecessary for her to not be a werewolf. Now, since Zombies just _loves_ alliteration, it's almost definite she'll be an alien.
Not to mention there is a comfirmed character appearing in Zombies 3 called A-lan (Alan) who will prob be a new crush for Addison or better a long lost brother/cousins/random family member
Or maybe in the end she was part Zombie all along. Her aunt and uncle arrive to Seabrook and it's discovered that he married the Zombie that bit him also that they are her biological parents but he didn't want her to be judged being mixed so he left his daughter to his brother in Seabrook so she could have a normal life.
I live in Toronto where these movies are filmed and honestly it's very strange walking around downtown, turning a corner, and then just suddenly seeing neon green and pink absolutely everywhere Also spoiler the next one is aliens lmao

This shouldn't have been a race thing. The zombies are literally humans with a health condition (that makes them a threat to other people) and need special devices to control the effects of this condition. Also, the condition is implied to be hereditary since zombies seem to be able to procreate to produce children with the same condition The conflict the movie could have gone for is the non-existant of an actual cure to turn zombies into regular humans causes parts of the society to try "cure" it through eugenics instead, as in preventing the zombies from having children so the zombie population will die off eventually. There's also a moral conflict because zombies are genuinely a threat to the safety and health to other people if their devices fail. There's also a possible conflict of a singular company monopolizing their devices. That company would single-handed determine if people with the zombie virus can have rational minds. So maybe the new CEO wants to monetize the hell out of it by making the devices a paid subscription and rig the device to kill a zombie if they don't pay up, because the device wouldn't function if it isn't paid for, making the zombies a threat to other people. There could be a generational difference between older zombies who got turned through the virus and younger zombies who are born as a zombie. Like, the ones that are turned misses being human and resents being a zombie, while the ones that are born are more proud of their characteristics as a zombie.
I’m surprised no one in the comments or in the video pointed out that this is supposed to be a metaphor for racism mostly between Black people and white people (segregated schools, their neighborhood being worse off than humans etc.) but the metaphor really falls flat

This twist would literally fix the biggest problem I have with this movie so well
That would have been a much better message :)
this would expect disney the corporation to nail metaphors for a marginalized group, and I think they might be really incompetent with that in general
Do you also have red eyes ?
@@skootergirl22 red eyes are exceedingly rare in albinsim. more likely they're blue.
I mean it is a big deal, especially in Africa, but it's never shown on the movie like that

What kind of marginalization do people with albinism get? Like some "possessed by a demon" stuff and whatnot?
“Teaching them to be civilised”
I feel like I heard/read that before 🤔
Oh yeah history class💀
I wouldn't be surprised if they did a plot around like asian immigration and adisin ends up being a secret alien simply because her name starts with A and all the zombie names start with Z and all the werewolf names start with W. I'm sure they'll handle it just as well as this because depicting a minority group in a movie as aliens invading is a great idea...

@@pastellaura2580 still has a prominent Z sound, although it doesn't start with it. It's an outliar, and it doesn't mean that Addison now has to be a dinosaur instead lol
The fact that this movie portrays minorities as literal monsters lmao 😭😭😭
Fun fact: the dance that the werewolves do with the two poles greatly resembles the traditional filipino folk dance called "tinikling" which makes you wonder why the fuck they included it in this movie
I thought that looked familiar, that's a really bizarre reference
Like, that would have forced the actress to do some real training to pull off, and it's to have the werewolves living in the woods of this American town have some Filipino folk dance traditions that she happens to handle easily?!
I have a fear of zombies and that applies to this movie. So that's a sign that you've failed in your message.
The zombies go beserk from conditioning. They don't need the bands. This is the actual lore 😭
Alot of Majority groups see the minority groups as harmful tho lol
and it's also very "othering", they're different species, but the races that are discriminated are still human, the only thing different is their skin colour
Yeah but you’re acting as if other people didn’t help fight against segregation irl.
@@corzalamel In real life racism is arbitrary. If people have a reason to be afraid the metaphor doesn't really work.
And all that after just a cheerleading competition. i'm not saying that fictional racism storylines can't be done or even done well, i'm just saying that it requires a certain nuance that i'm not sure disney has
@@svarakissoon1189 yeah I agree with that. Too on the nose lmao 😂
I saw a RUclips comment once that Addison’s real hair should be green instead of white. It kind of stuck with me, because as green hair is associated with being a zombie, it would give an actual reason for her feeling like she needed to hide it. It would also make a genuine connecting factor between her and Zed.
Yes! That would have been such a better idea
The moment you realize this is a movie about discrimination is the moment you realize it’s gonna be terrible.

the thing which annoys me about these movies is that Maddison’s whole character arc is how she “doesn’t fit in” but she literally just has slightly lighter than blonde hair, and then you look at the zombies who have literally been discriminated their whole lives by humans it just makes Maddison seem ignorant and insensitive
But maybe she’s an alien oooooooo
there's a lot wrong with the racism allegory here but tbf that's not that far off from in real life if we're being honest. not to invalidate others' struggles but we see folks like that all the time, especially when someone has little/nothing to actually be oppressed for and tries to relate to minorities and it comes off tone deaf lol

oh my god yes. seamus pls
Zombies was actually supposed to be a tv show but the pilot didn’t get picked up. So all the weird missing parts make sense. They just needed more time.
Most dcoms would work as shows tbh
"More time" but the premise was bad to begin with
The first Zombies movie is so weird because at its core you can tell there was actually a really fun and interesting storyline that we catch glimpses of throughout the movie (especially in that date scene and the scene where Zed's Zband stops working on the football field, there's actually some really interesting implications there) and then that core was ripped apart and buried under whatever the higher ups at disney thought would be better. This story had so much potential and instead we got this.
Also Addison is annoying but wbk
I would’ve preferred if Allison was just perfect because she’s such a little pest about her ugly Elsa hair.
Plus, the story kinda falls apart because zombies are an actual threat.
So therefore, the racism message is bad.
the time machine- hg wells
Izombie did a better job with a similar concept because it actually acknowledged that the zombies are dangerous whilst still letting them be sympathetic and making you hate the people who’re against them because they go as far as to murder zombie children and torture one of the supporting characters whilst you can still understand why they hate and fear them
i still cant stop laughing at the thought of someone screaming "SHE HAS WHITE HAIR AND PRONOUNCE" while they boo'd Addison for taking the wig off
Here's the main reason I hate this movie: during all the promotions disney channel kept saying there'd be a special look at Infinity War during a commercial break.
That frustrated me so much
I'm not even a full blown mcu fan and I would have been pissed to sit through this movie for a trailer I have already seen

This shouldn't have been a race thing. The zombies are literally humans with a health condition (that makes them a threat to other people) and need special devices to control the effects of this condition. Also, the condition is implied to be hereditary since zombies seem to be able to procreate to produce children with the same condition
The conflict the movie could have gone for is the non-existant of an actual cure to turn zombies into regular humans causes parts of the society to try "cure" it through eugenics instead, as in preventing the zombies from having children so the zombie population will die off eventually.
Fucking just wrote a better movie there mate
I absolutely hate how Zombies 3 come out on my birthday and I know my little sisters are going to rewatch it constantly. Rip.
So sorry
seamus gorman, the most creative youtuber for video intros. we stan
4:39 i love how we’ve just collectively agreed that it is and forever will be 2020 lol
I’m surprised no one in the comments or in the video pointed out that this is supposed to be a metaphor for racism mostly between Black people and white people (segregated schools, their neighborhood being worse off than humans etc.) but the metaphor really falls flat
Also that the werewolves are supposed to represent Native Americans which is also gross, the channel Musical Hell reviewed both of these films and really explains why these metaphors fail and are gross
@@audramcdonaldapologist3676 unfortunately wouldn’t be the first time that werewolves were supposed to be indigenous people :(( you can thank Twilight for that
The whole prom queen and king thing is so ridiculous first of all not everyone is straight and fits in the gender binary and some ppl might not have a date and then they wouldn't ever be in the running. Also it is so difficult to know who is dating who in high school bc sometimes ppl will break up and date someone else and then later on your like when did they break up but you figure out it was like last year
The plot of the second one confuses me a lot
Zombies series is about Addison discovering herself and where she came from
It’s a coming of age story
So things did happen
The white hair is foreshadowing
There was like a sort of post credit scene that you missed
when I got to the end i noticed that you skipped watching the last cliffhanger scene when the confirmed that addison will be an alien in zombies 3
Fast forward to now when we have a third one
ok but we own the night and all the other werewolves songs are bops
The first one was fine the second one was actively painful to watch.
My favourite part of zombies is Meg’s hair being white blonde and she is shunned because of it. That’s like bullying Alpharad guys, would you bully Alpharad?
Seamus you NEED to watch the cheetah girls trilogy because it's so ridiculous you're gonna love it
