    I started out doing five of them them while laying down, every other day. Man did I feel it the next day. That was a couple of months ago. I worked up to swinging my leg forward to get a stretch in the hamstring, then back while rotating the hip/leg mid-point in the swing, then the other way when swinging forward. I do 15 of them while laying down. Standing up I can do 10 on each leg...awesome!

    Great video, thank you. I thought that the coverage of the hip airplane in McGills Back Mechanic wasn't very detailed and I was kinda lost in what to take care of during this exercise.
    So I figured check YT and here we are, great video!

    Great video and explanation, I'm only just getting into this exercise. Didn't know it was a "McGill Hip Airplane" til I saw your video, so thanks alot.
    In which of Professor McGill's works would I find this concept "originally"? I like getting to the "original source" of things when I can..

    • @fmrtherapy3533

      I'm not sure of the history of this move being called the "McGill Hip Airplane" but you might find what you are looking for on his website: www.backfitpro.com
      He wrote a book called The Back Mechanic" for patients to use as a guide to resolving their back pain... I would suggest starting there to learn about his concepts.
      Hope that helps!

    • @fmrtherapy3533

      Thank you for the comment! You want to keep your knee on the planted leg slightly bent. This will give your brain better access to the actual muscles that externally rotate the hip.

    Great explanation. If my right hip is my painful one, should that be the planted side for this excercise or the other way round?

    • @fmrtherapy3533
      @fmrtherapy3533  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for the compliment. Yes, you should plant your right let and do a set. Since your hip has pain present, be gentle with yourself and work within a range that doesn't create a lot of pain. Also, plant the other leg and work that left hip too!!

    Hi
    I like the demonstration, but you mentioned that this exercise, would improve hip ER.. I believe that fixing the femur and moving the body to ER, would improve hip IR, not the opposite.... Is that right

    • @fmrtherapy3533
      @fmrtherapy3533  3 года назад

      It does both! With better connection to our deep hip rotators, we can improve both IR and ER. 👍

      Terry, I like to tell my clients to do as many as they can with good form until you get to "failure", which means form will crumble. It hard to say how many that will be, but as long as you can really feel those tissues working hard, you'll be making progress! Thanks for the comment!

      @fmrtherapy3533  2 года назад

      Oh no! I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing pain. Be sure to get assessed by a medical professional so they can guide you with which movements are best for you to be practicing. Generally speaking, it is best to avoid ranges of motion that create pain, and a skilled practitioner can help you with how to restore your range of motion with a progression of exercises. Good luck my friend!

    Should I do this if I have had hip replacement???

    • @fmrtherapy3533
      @fmrtherapy3533  2 года назад +1

      Hi Anita! Everyone's recovery from hip replacement surgery is different, so if you are worried this exercise might not be right for you, then consult your doctor first. BUT .... this movement is considered very safe and very good for people to practice both before and after hip arthroplasty. The exercise is to help with teaching both stability and mobility in the joint and that's a win-win for just about any body!! Good luck!

    • @fmrtherapy3533
      @fmrtherapy3533  3 года назад

      Hi Melissa, I think it would matter where a post-op client is in their healing process, but once anyone has passed the point of a green light for physical activity with their surgeon, this would be a very appropriate exercise to help restore the deeper stabilizing musculature of the hip. :-)
