- Principal of The Royal Ballet Steven McRae performs his tap solo Czárdás with violinist Vasko Vassilev as part of World Ballet Day 2015. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk
Australian dancer Steven McRae is a Principal of The Royal Ballet. He joined The Royal Ballet School on a Prix de Lausanne scholarship in 2003. He graduated into The Royal Ballet in 2004 and was promoted to First Artist in 2005, Soloist in 2006, First Soloist in 2008 and Principal in 2009. His classical and dramatic roles with the Company include Romeo, Des Grieux (Manon), Prince Siegfried (Swan Lake), Prince Florimund (The Sleeping Beauty), Prince (The Nutcracker and Cinderella), the Chosen One (The Rite of Spring) and Colas (La Fille mal gardée). McRae has created roles for Kim Brandstrup, Alastair Marriott, Wayne McGregor, Alexei Ratmansky, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon, among others.
McRae was born and raised in Sydney. His father was a drag racer and McRae shares his passion for motor racing. He began dancing at the age of seven after becoming interested in his older sister’s dance classes. McRae performs tap alongside ballet, a dual ability he displayed in his Prix de Lausanne entry and often used by choreographers in new roles created on McRae, such as the Mad Hatter in Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Prizes include the 2002 Adeline Genée Gold Medal, the 2003 Prix de Lausanne, the 2007 Emerging Male Artist (Classical) and the 2012 Best Male Dancer Awards at the Critics’ Circle Dance Awards, and in 2014 he was named Young Australian Achiever in the UK by the Australia Day Foundation. He has performed as a guest artist with ballet companies all over the world, including American Ballet Theater (as part of a dance exchange programme), National Ballet of Canada, the Australian Ballet, Tokyo Ballet and numerous international galas.
The uses of the ankle in ballet and tap are profoundly different - one is stiff and the other is loose. I have never seen a dancer be so proficient in both. Almost impossible and wonderfully so.
Steven is so lovely inside and out. Beautiful spirit and attitude.
I've followed him for several years now. Amazing!
fabulous!
Touching. Thank you for sharing a great performance.
Was that a nod to Baryshnikov at the end? The leg moment like at the end of the opening Ballet in the movie White Nights? Incredible. :-D
what a guy!
Big big big thumb up!
My god. McCrae is something between a dance superhero and, seemingly, the nicest goddamn guy Australia has ever offered besides that old man who knit sweaters for penguins ( I think he was Australian at least). Steven McRae, despite being basically a god-emperor in the ballet world, plasters his Instagram with pictures of his sinfully adorable little kids and how over the moon he is to be a husband and father. Who just happens to be a god-emperor as well.
Special people are born everywhere; but the parents put in the time and money so he could have the training. Not to diminish his work, tenacity etc, but his mum had to ferry him to the lessons many times a week. His training was also somewhat alien to them in the beginning; his father being a drag racer.
That's Australia for you. Think of some other countries where there are no teachers for this and certainly no parents who could afford it or ferry the child.
There’s an old man that knits sweaters for penguins!! 😮… We’ll, this guy has to be the best tap dancer I’ve ever seen.
HOW DID HIS LEGS NOT FALL OFF DURING THAT HE'S A PURE MACHINE
That was just amazing. He Killed it. Never saw such an amazing perfomance before.
such a good performance but have you ever saw people from marinski?
I love Steven McRae's dances and performances. Here's a little info: Csárdás, often seen with the archaic spelling Czárdás, is a traditional Hungarian folk dance, the name derived from csárda (old Hungarian term for tavern). It originated in Hungary and was popularized by Romani music bands in Hungary and neighboring lands. (I am Hungarian btw so this is extra special).
No. It is based on the hungarian csárdás genre, but this piece was composed in 1904 by Vittorio Monti. This composition is not a traditional hungarian folk dance, even if is inspired by them.
@@violetta7853 Yes, Czárdás is indeed the original Hungarian folk dance @That'sSoBeki is speaking about. Vittorio Monti drew inspiration from it and composed a piece to which he gave the same name in its honour. If I compose a piece that I choose to call 'Tarantella', it will be my interpretation of it, but Tarantella, the original, will still be the traditional Italian dance.
And it is NEVER danced in tap-shoes....
This genuinely helped me realize I was bisexual.
Sweetie, you can utterly admire and respond to another man through his physique and, here, dancing, but it's entirely another thing wanting to engage in sex with another man. Try out the latter....see how you go. Robert, UK.
@@2eleven48 The fuck? Lol
WHY do people feel the need to connect everything to their reproductive plumbing? And WHY do they feel the need to burden the rest of us with their private revelations?
@@hermajesty52 lmao, fuck off? How is a comment burdening you?
@@2eleven48 uhhhhhh no thanks
The combination of ballet and tap at the beginning before moving to include influences of what felt like multiple styles of ballroom dancing, like tango and waltz throughout, and that absolutely sinful ending of the body wave into the “draw me like one of your French girls” pose, as well as the playfulness from the violinist. This is such a masterpiece.
If you love this combo of ballet and tap, you should definitely check out his performance as the Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland ballet! It's amazing!
The violinist was amazing too.
Vasko Vasiliev, Concert Master, Royal Opera House
Michael Flatley: Riverdance
Steven McCrae: Hold my beer
lol lol lol lol lol
Irish dance and tap dance are completely different. I'm saying as an Irish dancer. But yeah McCrae is amazing
michael flatley “made” the show lord of the dance not the show riverdance.
Let's not insult the god of dance Steven McRae by mentioning Michael Flatley in the same breath as him
@@nin-nin2Irish dancer and tap dancer here: they’re similar enough to be honest.
@@sof7068 You probably know better with your experience. But for me, having only tried one, they seem quite far off. I'd genuinely love to hear a more detailed comparison, only if you'd want tho
Is anyone else here because he was the only good part of the Cats movie?
I hated every moment of it except his performance as Skimbleshanks, and I wanted to see more of what he could do without being smothered in horrific CGI.
Vice versa I only watched the Cats film for Steven and Francesca Hayward. So many talented people in that film. Such a shame it was so rushed. Skimbleshanks was definitely the best part of that film.
same, I'm thankful to the film for introducing me to a bunch of great dancers I knew nothing about.
Between Skimbleshanks, Rum Tum Tugger and Grizabella they made the movie bare able for me.
I liked Robbie Fairchild, too.
He's in the Cats movie?! Might actually watch it now
His skill level is extraordinary. He makes you feel every step. That’s the epitome of a dancer. BRILLIANT❤️
STEVEN MCRAE IS MY HERO !!!!!!
Absolutely amazing! Well done dancer, violinist and pianist. Why criticise something so wonderful done for such a wonderful reason in such a generous way? Actually violinist and pianist should both be following the dancer. So what if the pianist got a little behind at one point? He soon gets back on track and it was obviously recorded live and not edited. So well done all I say! (I'm a dance teacher by the way.)
Hilary Saxby well no hate but when they perform the pianist can’t do that because it is live music
oh really! they were having a great time. And he is bloody amazing. Ive seen him many times and never puts a foot wrong, well must have at some point but, i just love him (by the way)
I would LOVE to see him go against a classical Irish step dancer (i.g. Colin Dunne or others). His speed and precision are incredible, and he has such grace. Love the blended genres at play here.
There is utterly no blended genre of Irish step dancing and what McRae performs here, you silly girl.
@@2eleven48 what she’s saying is that the stevens use of stiffness and looseness would be beautiful with a mix of irish dances stiffness also.
Oh but there are "blended" forms of Irish dance. See Prodijig & Fusion Fighters for a start. Both influences on more conventional Irish dance too. (Depends on definition of "blended", of course.)
The man is amazing. Those high-speed spins are unbelievable
I love that you said it's good to TAP into the different styles
Thank you thank you thank you sooo much for re-uploading this!
Absolutely TALENT.
1:40 that moment where the first proper tap happens is magical
Wow, the dance and his technique is amazing. By the way, I also love the sound of his taps. Thank you.
Stunning..., terrifyingly beautiful. Steven McRae, you are much, much more than amazing, you are perfect. Thank you so much for sharing your absolutely great talent. Impossible not to mention the performance of this wonderful violinist, Vasko Vassilev. Thanks, Royal Opera House, for posting this beautiful video.
Steven is one of the greatest dancers of all time and this incredible performance just confirms it. The spins are off the scale. Great violin and piano playing too.
McRae is a god of ballet. He's just breathtaking to watch every single time.
Goodness! I’ve heard this song countless times all my life but had never seen a piece of choreography that properly honored its energy and tempo (because frankly it’s almost humanly impossible) until today... I’m speechless, and in awe!
So elegant and flawless!
Watching him makes me want to take dance classes. Not to do it professionally, but just because he looks like he's having SO MUCH DAMN FUN!
Looovely!
But I must say, I am a bit concerned that the title says "Composer: Vasko Vassilev", when it is clearly the very well known czardas by Monti...
I know. My first reaction was: "Whaaat?!" But I think Vasko is the violin player, and he may be composing on the side...
Extraordinary. Uplifting. How to fly with one's feet on the ground.
Steven you are my favorite male dancer such an inspiration and fabulous role model for our children if only they paid you guys as much as nfl players because you are wholesome role model for the youth than they are...anyway sending love and respect from philly.usa
I would love to see an interview between Steven and his lovely wife Lizzy.
Wow, that was a superb performance! Art has no boundaries - Steven the dancer is Australian, Vasko the violinist is Bulgarian (as I am), Czardash is a Hungarian folk dance and the composer Vittorio Monti is Italian. And tapping is Irish. :D
I just posted a similar comment before reading yours! We are thinking along the same lines which are so relevant at this sad time for Europe.
Wow ! Amazing rhythm, such accurate tapping feet and still a shining performance and what a violinist too!
Magnificent! Touching, fluent and full of air. Marvelous cooperation between the violinist and the dancer, great dialogue.
Thank you for sharing it with us, it is a candy.
❤Bravo I just adore Steve he is a special n rare talent🎉
Yeah, he is really one in a million. Talking like a gay, moving like a gay, behaving like a gay, dancing like a heterosexual could never do but.... there he is- with awife and a daughter....
the violinist sounded as if he was rushing so he wasn't in synch with the dancer
the violinist was completely in sync with the dancer but whereas the pianist is out of time. The pianist as the accompaniment for the violinist always accomodates the violinist, not the other way around. And i have played czardas before, the song is supposed to lead into a very fast pace exactly like how the violinist played. perhaps they didnt have time to rehearse between the violinist and the pianist.
Nonesense.
I’m so grateful people who have the talent to dance are so dedicated to take the all the time and sacrifice it takes to become so masterful like this dancer. Wow. Just wow. This performance was just mind blowing. Violinist was also wonderful!
Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire would have enjoyed watching this.
There needs to be a new word in dictionary to describe this performance.
the piano and violin aren't always in time together...but the dancing is fantastic as always!
Какая прелесть!!! Браво, браво и танцору и скрипачу💐
Beyond words but let me try: artistic PERFECTION and a timing which matches every single note of the great violinist. This is pure dancing genius, out of competition. And he is such a nice lad, too! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆💫✨🙏🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Omg. This was so amazing. I can't get over it. I have watched this way too many time
This is so freaking brilliant!!! Well done, Steven ;)
OMG there was a moment when i supposed the violinist was going to start dancing too!
Absolutely amazing. Both of them. Thank you very much for making the video.
Absolutely stunning. This man is amazing 😍
I've loved this song for years, never thought anyone could actually dance to it. Steven McRae managed to prove me wrong beautifully.
That's extraordinary. Very much praise. I was born in Hungary. The csárdás is our national dance, but it is danced quite differently. This fusion of dance styles is wonderful.
Amazing! Smiled the whole time! Love the chemistry with the violinist!
It's a shame, the violinist was going a bit too fast. They should take cues from the pianist, who sets the tempo. In this case the pianist had to rush to keep up with him. The music is so beautiful I can't understand why this would happen. You would think professionally trained musicians could keep time but apparently not.
Maybe the violinist is used more to working alone
i agree with you the first time i watched it but when i watched it again the violinist was completely in sync with the dancer but whereas the pianist is out of time. The pianist as the accompaniment for the violinist always accomodates the violinist, not the other way around. And i have played czardas before, the song is supposed to lead into a very fast pace exactly like how the violinist played. perhaps they didnt have time to rehearse between the violinist and the pianist.
Fantastic performance from an amazingly talented dancer, and such a lovely man too.
It's a perfect hybrid of Hungarian, Roma, Irish, and Argentinian choreography. Steven is amazing, both on TV and on stage. Saw him dance live, loved him to bits.
Him as the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.... just beautiful
Sigrid De leon I had the luck to see him perform that role almost two years ago when they brought the ballet back for a limited run and I cried. I also managed to get his autograph, genuinely the loveliest man.
Ok, if this man can change lightbulbs and get rid of spiders for me, he can move in...
He’s so talented it hurts! 😘
Beautiful Music and dancing!!! Thank you Royal Opera house and Steven McRae!!! ❤
Still one of my fave pieces ever! 😍
I love this, not only because I take ballet and tap :)
He is such an incredibly talented dancer. So happy to be able to se his work. I bow before him. 👏
Это чудесно, волшебно! Лучший Чардаш!!! ❤👋👍✌🤜🤛 Какое счастье наслаждаться Вашим талантом! А скрипачу отдельный респект. Вы команда, вы классные!
I know that we are young and i know that she may love me, but i just can't to be with you like this anymore..
Alejandro...
Exactly what I think whenever I watch this. 😂
Extraordinary! Glenn Wood, you must be so proud of your wonderful student, all those years ago.
Wonderful and great!!!!
that was the most awesome thing in the history of ever
When Ballet meets Tap
Just Wonderful ! 💙 this
As a Hungarian folkdancer it's interesting to see this "remake". He is a great and creative artist and he made a amazing coreography. Altough as the Csárdás is danced by couples this is a bit hollow for me. The woman energy is missing. The name Verbunk would be more appropiate because of the similarities in the movements and in the violin variation. The meaning and the feelings are really close too! Again, beautiful! Thanks for taking inspiration from my culture❤
Lovely but it's spelled csárdás 😊. The composer of Hungarian Dances 5 is Brahms. Nice performance tho.
Ser um bom bailarino clássico, okay.
Ser um bom sapateador, okay.
Mas ser ótimo nos dois é um sacrilégio.
A mí me parece fantástico
OMG*-* it's amazing! And it's Hungarian♥
На всякий случай:автор музыки Монти. В классическом скрипичном репертуаре данное произведение так и называется
- "Чардаш" Монти.🎻
What a pair I feel blessed to have seen and heard this. Stunning beautiful outstanding. So much talent. Thank you for sharing.
Magnificently awesome! Dancer AND violinist!
Who are the 35 blind mice? Steven is amazing. Bravo
They’re the numpty brigade!
Good to the males expressing themselves creatively. More men should try expressing themselves creatively, not necessarily in dance, could be anything. It would be good for their spirits. He is very good, in how he has managed to combine steps from classical ballet with tap dancing and add a touch of the Flamenco gyspy folkloric element to suit the music. But, one must also acknowledge the brilliant musician. This instrument and that type of music is virtuosic, fiendishly difficult to play so well. And all they had to create such a brilliant performance were just two real artists in ordinary simple clothes, no glittery costumes, no fancy scene setting. Just the two of them, their passion for their art and the space to express it. Sometimes, that is all real artists need to do their thing, creatively.

talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it

Micro-aggression 🤨 /s
HE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! SO SO TALENTED ❤️
One of the best tap dancers I have seen. Wow!
steven reminds me of my former philosophy teacher. This elegance when he dance, his aura, even his look ;P (also of Claude of Black Butler 2...)
Love this piece!
Bravo Steven ! 🌹
Ok SM is AMAZING but can we also acknowledge the VIOLINIST??!!
Okay I'm sorry but that violinist is not following the piano or Steven at all...rushes so much like😢
its not Czardas, its still kinda River dance in a "way of Czardas". Monti wasn"t a H
ungarian guy ither, but got a Hungarian soul in his gratiest hit. McRae has to watch and learn real Hangarian dances
L'unico uomo in canottiera che mi è piaciuto...😉E' BRAVISSIMO!
Fantastic♥️
Very nice, astonisching Mc.Rae! (For me it looks more irisch then ?Hungarian?)
Wow bravo just exceptional and so much precision and passion. I absolutely loved it Steven is incredibly talented! I hope he is still doing fabulously in his dancing career!
just watched steven's scimblshencks in the cat. marvelous dance,
bravo!
I wish they would do more song/dance movies like "Singing in the Rain" !!!
I'm disappointed. I expected a couple of cartwheels as part of the choreography.
Brilliant!! The “dislike” people are douches....or jealous 😜
i don’t think people understand what tap dancers have to do ( i’ve done tap all my life) we have make so many sounds with our heels and toes every time we lift them up or else it doesn’t sound right 😂
steven mcrae is good dancer.
