Thank you for demonstrating the use of the flat brush to make the pine needles (as tedious as it is)! Painting complex foliage is difficult for me, especially for things like pines, ferns and moss, which I love to admire and paint,, but can't capture them very well (yet!).
These happy trees came out beautifully, you give so much life and color to the little trees. :)
Trees and light- two of my favorite things!!!
I hope you're taking care of yourself and thank you for what you do. 💛

Omigosh! I'm struggling to pick out colours when the light hits trees and this is SUPER helpful. Will give these colour "tricks" a try - thanks so much for the really friendly explanation, Sarah!

It's lovely to see you using various brush shapes for different textures. It's so easy to pick up a round and try to make it do all the things, so it's very useful to see you taking the trouble to swap around shapes throughout xx

Sometimes I stick with one big flat brush for a whole painting, which is good for helping me to be creative with mark making, or to really get to know a brush. But otherwise just use whatever tool suits the task best :)

Wow. I'm learning a lot from you Sarah. You're an exceptional artist and teacher. I recently finished a gouache study of a tree and the more I worked on it, the muddier and flatter it got. I'll try again and use the pre-mixed colors - love that! Best to you.

Thank you 💜 So often people only include a narritive of what they're doing. What colour, what brush, what mixture. Including the why is far more useful and the bit that lets us apply that thinking to our own work. Such a beautiful study with super vibrant color, lovin it lots.

So, as I mentioned in a previous comment, your videos are really inspiring me try to gouache! I dipped my toes in a couple of years ago when I was watching Steve Huston's amazing sketchbook videos in gouache, but I hadn't even really tried watercolor yet, and was just getting back into art, and I was flummoxed. I'm working on 100 animals in watercolor right now (and I swear, I'm going to finally get the first video through editing and uploaded tonight!!), but after I'm done with that I'm going to dive into gouche! I'm so excited. I'm looking forward to joining your patreon at the beginning of the month, too! Thanks so much for making such awesome content, and sorry about this ginormous comment!! 😁

Stillman and Burns makes toned watercolor paper. Strathmore 400 spiral bound, Toned Tan (or gray) is 80 lb, 118 g/m is what I have from Hobby Lobby. $7.49 for A5 size, 50 sheets of paper, hot pressed. Very smooth. It’s a tad thin for what I am used to using. I think I will spend a little more cash, and try the Stillman and Burns. 👍🖌
