I'm a boxer, who now practices ITF taekwon-do I've met people who do WT and ATA and both have some good practitioners. Taekwon-do the art has a lot of holes in it but so to BJJ and any other art, yes I've done BJJ as well. The bottom line is we need to use what works and disguard what doesn't ,also whether you doing Aikido or Muay thai doesn't matter as long as you enjoy your art. The problem comes in when people have unrealistic expectations of their art and want to mimic movies or UFC atheles. On my journey I'm opening to learning from other arts I'm not dogmatic and I respect all oponents no matter what they practice.
@@Dreaming-11 yeah that’s kind of my personal opinion as well but I kind of just let it go because people do love to compete in the WTF and it does get you into the Olympics, which is pretty bad ass as well
the question of real world effectiveness aside its a great sport to participate in and watch. belongs in olympics just as much as any other very athletic sport.
There’s a reason Gen Choi was livid about TKD being an Olympic sport. MMA on the other hand, might serve as a proving ground to show the old version of TKD we lost the past few decades.
The problem is that since TKD is the "most popular" you're going to get a huge variety of uncontrolled quality. Most people are not martial arts literate. No one dojo/studio represents the entirety of a style. TKD can be applied for self-defense, discipline, showcasing, a sport or a daycare to drop kids off at for an hour. Marketing yourself as something DISTINCT is important.
I do sanshou, and the only time I was ever knocked out was by a TKD person. An art is what YOU make it. My only beef with TKD is the hierarchical structure foisted upon students, but this is an issue with many traditional martial arts.
I'm glad you found a Martial Art that you like to train and what you are saying makes sense as does what you described about your style of TKD. Here's another perspective from a BJJ guy... most people I run into throw shade on TKD not because of the various styles (we are aware of them), it's the teenagers with Black Belts which is total Bullshit, the completely crazy high kicks that make no sense in a real fight, the insane nonsense that is seen on the internet with practitioners who are overweight, can't do the techniques, or who have black belts and absolutely suck at fighting, plus all the insane videos from Korea with TKD dance routines, marriages, etc.. Plus, comments from guys like Joe Rogan. This all serves to make the style look bad to outsiders. TKD and Karate both have run into issues in the ring as well. Practitioners seem to get obliterated by MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ, Wrestlers, etc. So, not meaning any disrespect to you or your style of TKD, that's what I'm seeing and I agree with a lot of the points you make. I hope that helps.
lol I could not agree with you more that’s one of my issues I have high kicks do not make any sense especially the overweight, within the martial artist I just kinda do my thing and not pay attention to that side of it lol
The argument that it's 'hated' has no legs. We just need to kick it up a notch and show the world that we're head and shoulders above other sports. /catch my puns? 🙂 On a serious note, I was hoping you'd fly-kick a wooden board that says "TKD Rocks"
My first martial arts rip off came from a TKD 'master". Not a big deal he came to town sold me a 'life time membership" which was really just an enrolment fee plus monthly dues. Did not like his location (where i joined at) so left and had a hard time finding a location, he tried to keep it up a while then sent a student for a while then eventually just thought he could abandon us and keep our money...all the while talking about what a great master and Christian he was. Had to take him to small claims court. we won and he still didn't pay what he owed...lol. But it was a lessen to be learned about TKD for a teenager. No body I know 'hates" (has no respect for would be a better description) TKD because of the Curriculum, its the degeneration of standards (two year 'black belts") and the guaranteed black belts and other business abuses that TKD invented. The scams and scandals in the olympics and such have not helped. And MMA is a "system' of styles not a style and it is the greatest evolution of unarmed combat.
Good Stuff. Sometimes it's best your school doesn't grow because you can get more personalized attention and go everyday. I knew an old man that taught JKD for free and would only take a hand full of students. If you didn't put your heart and soul into training he would tell you to go home and not come back. If you were terrible but tried your best. You could stay. He also taught humility, restraint and respect for others. None of which I possessed at the time, but learned.
I don't practice TKD (I do practice other martial arts), but watching your video, you seem to kinda get off subject. You mention the three types of TKD, but don't specifically compare each of them to each other. Then you say that your TKD has a lot in common with TSD, but from what I understand, TSD is derived from Okinawan/Japanese Karate (with many forms/kata being pretty much identical), so is that really typical TKD? Also, many Koreans practice multiple Korean arts, so if they practice TKD they also practice Hapkido, for example. I did check out your school's website, and I'm also a bit leery of seeing so many Grand Masters and "Chief" masters, all in the same school. Most other schools/styles have maybe just one Grand Master (or the equivalent) and they are usually the founder of the style and not among the living anymore. Having said all that, I do wish you luck with your youtube channel!
The only Master out of Jacksonville that I know is grandmaster William Clark still getting to know the folks in the GTMA How long have you been training GTMA
1. General Choi ruined ITF with the bouncy bouncy. 2. The Gracies put on an exhibition (that was a setup) many years ago and beat a bunch of really bad Korean Karate exponents. Ask Bill Wallace about it. 3. Rubbish Olympic Taekwondo. 4. McDojos.
I would argue that the McDojos are the biggest reason no one takes it seriously. I now believe alot of those mcdojos will move into Muay Thai/BJJ and mma. They will follow the money.
@@Loawercs31 You're absolutely correct. I've seen mcdojang after mcdojang become "MMA" or "BJJ" and the "master" of the school is a friggin white belt is Jiujitsu.
I agree with you about TKD. I started in the martial arts with a first-generation 6th Dan Chung Do Kwon Korean man way back in the day before there was TKD in the US. He was like a father to me. He promoted me to Shodan. Looking back, I didn't realize at the time how really good he was and the system he taught was more like TSD. He had studied in Japan and was also a boxer. Eventually, I found Kang Duk Won (West coast) and now am a 5th Dan. I also have a 5th Dan in Tracy's Kenpo and do submission grappling. Best!
Simple... It's not very effective in real life scenarios, period. It is very incomplete, no throws, no ground game, no submissions. But, if you get attacked by thin wood boards being held by a person on top of the shoulders of another person, it's a fantastic sport.
Just a note for your commentators: Gen. Choi didn't do bouncy theory--North Korean ITF did that one. TKD doesn't mean anything unless you're a WT Olympic style combat sport player--that's TKD, for all other arts carrying the name TKD--it's an associative term, not a style. Lastly, most TKD nowadays is nothing but crappy, kid's, "karate".
Buddy I just have to tell you btw I do have a black belt in TKD and I realized I knew absolutely nothing about defending myself as I can see that you don’t have a clue it wasn’t till I started Muay Thai And Brazilian Jiu jitsu until I knew how many holes and how many bad habits you get into with taekwondo dude if you block strikes like you’re showing like taekwondo teaches you you would get absolutely destroyed by anyone any mixed martial artist that’s worth anything and you have no idea what to do if say I mean you don’t think a good Collegiate wrestler can’t take you down without you knocking them out every time I promise you they can and you have no answer once you get there because you don’t know what you’re doing. If you can’t fight off your back, you can’t fight. Honestly, why don’t you go spar a good boxer? Probably wouldn’t work out good for you. Just saying you might want to think about the BJJ cuz I would trade my black belt in TKD for my Blue belt in jiu jitsu any day of the week because the blue belt is gonna kick your ass and that’s just how it is!!
