[Hollywood Martial] Arts is that A Real Thing ?
I like a straight knife hand to the throat , in place of a C strike/web hand . More of a thrust than a chop I guess . It has less chance of hitting the chin by mistake and you don't have to bring your elbow in to throw it so it's really fast from a relaxed position . I honestly can remember where I learned it , and if I have ever seen anybody else do it but I'm sure it's fairly common . I also never practiced hitting with the fingers at all , or even holding them together . Just the edge of the palm . So maybe I'm NOT throwing a knife hand by definition at all.
Taekwondo has gotten a lot of respet in the last decade because of some fighters with TKD backgrounds in UFC and people making logcal arguments for why it is a good style. Taekwondo bgets hate for ATA mcdojangs, and WT Olympic sparring, and all the mcdojangism and PC styles of nonsense. Like TKD dancing. The people controlling the narrative and culture of Taekwondo are the problem.
I practiced traditional ITF Taekwondo back in the mid-80s through the mid-90s approximately 1987 to 1995 and I thought that traditional ITF style was amazing incorporating everything from strong solid stances with an emphasis on forms training with explanation to the movements as well as traditional punching techniques infused with modern Western boxing as well as sweeping, tripping and throwing techniques and a lot of emphasis on self-defense incorporating kicking and striking and throwing techniques together! I was in the process of training for my purple belt and for whatever reason the traditional ownership of the ITF school that I loved so much closed down and was replaced buy a WTF olympic-style garbage organization! I lasted 3 months with the WTF organization before I became frustrated and ultimately quit! ITF is legit and WTF just sucks!
@@williambreen4290 yeah I absolutely agree. The ITF is amazing really good martial arts and I love their sparring.
@MrTKD123 well at any rate I'm glad I found this channel! It seems as though you have your head screwed on right and I like the message you're sending out regarding martial arts in General as well as the effectiveness and possibilities of traditional Taekwondo in the future
My first official style was at a Hapkido/TKD school in San Diego called Ho Shin Moo Do. It was run by a tough as nails Korean man with little to no english . It was hands up , 50/50 hand and foot strikes , lot of take downs and grappling and power kicks . Some of the kicks were spinning and jumping which at 21 I LOVED. When I watch the Olympic style for lack of a better word I don't get it all. Especially the hopping and low hands . But I'm with you, I don't care what what somebody else does , it has no effect on me . Belong to a large organization can certainly have it's benefits though. Greetings from Seattle!
You make a great point my instructor now my grandmaster GK Lee is tough as nails type of guy and he has a lot of grappling in this style, he got a black belt through Gracie organization along with Chunga Quan from his cousin eternal grand Master HU Lee the trees that come to America are crazy tough
@@MrTKD123 He did a break of 4 certified boards tied in a bundle and hanging from a string . No measuring or warm up , just BAM with a backfist and shattered them . That was badass . Reminded me of a Hee Il Cho break .
Kung fu + hard sparring = a generic kickboxing Karate + hard sparring = a generic kickboxing TKD + hard sparring = a generic kickboxing This is why traditional martial arts in East Asia have bad names. Most techniques don't work. Once you start sparring, most traditional techniques are thrown out because they don't work. They all become a generic kickboxing/Muay thai.
Tradition
TKD is hated dame way as Aikido is hated: stupid idiots on the internet hate something. Just ignore them.
Over a minute in and he is talking about saddles
I don't think Tkd is hated... Probably most of the other traditional martial arts are...
I think judo is the best for beginners because it teaches how to take a falls and rolls and then taekwondo is good for use a proper technique but they don't train as hard as kickboxers
A lot of the disdain for Taekwondo began when audiences saw TKD fighters get defeated in the early UFCs.
Read myths and blind spots in the fighting arts' world, he'll make you figure it out.
If you train in ground fighting you won't have the mindset of trying to avoid the ground as much. Its best to avoid it on the street yes but when you do get pinned you need to know how to escape. Especially if there are others coming. Bjj teaches you to survive on the ground of you do get there and other reasons. I agree with your reasonings. It's just there is merit to groundfighting tactics in settings where you do not want to harm your opponent where you can more easily control them.
I'm bjj it takes around 10-15 years average to get your black belt. It can be done in a shorter time time but it's usually by prodigys. Most of the time it's about 10 years.
make a video on how to start tkd like warmup running exericses
@@ravichandel8690 ok yeah I’m working on one of those right now. Actually it should be coming out in a few more days, but I’ll definitely get that out to you
A hammer fist absorbs inpact better. A knife hand hurts the fingers even when you're striking with the correct part. The shock wave just travels through the hand and into the fingertips. You're nice and protected with a hammer fist. I'm agreeing with the idea that the shuto is more for framing than for striking.
jump kicks with rotation and double kicks is something special in TKD, basic kicks you can find in karate or myai thai.
I'm not a big fan of TKD/ Karate, because I spent many years NOT learning how to kick a high roundhouse kick... It took me minutes to learn how to kick a high Muay Thai roundhouse. Also TKD and Karate had alot of cool throws and joint locks that are being forgotten. The only martial art that has survived the sports version of it's selve is Judo. But that's just the nature of the sport, it lends itself well to self defense, despite the rules. I can see BJJ going the same way as TKD becoming more convoluted as time goes on. A good indication that a martial art is dying, is the belt ranking system, where more and more belts or time is added to justify the specialized skills needed to achieve the next belt. Like the round house done in a very specific way that isn't even considered effective anymore.
Many Kung fu, Karate, TKD schools have already incorporated Muay thai trainings and principles.
Great video, sir. The style of Taekwondo I do is called Chontu. We do WT forms, but the sparring and self defense techniques are based on my instructor's experience training with Korean Marines for 3 years.
@richnielsen4465 Thank you Sir I do appreciate that how long have you been training?

@@MichaelZuzolo that was interesting. I love those back stories that you wouldn’t normally hear back in the day if you weren’t a part of that crew.
I'm curious. Can you tell me about your dojang in the videos you post? What are its dimensions, and how did you build it? Were there any special considerations, like flooring? I ask because I'm thinking about building my own backyard dojang, and I'm not sure the dimensions and whether or not to start with a shed kit or do it completely from scratch. Thanks!
@@stevenweigand7153 yeah of course this is a at home Dojang the dimensions are about 24x16 I would recommend making one around 20 x 20 that’s a standard ring size. and probably the most comfortable. I would probably make sure that everything is pretty well insulated if you have all four seasons, it gets really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter so you’ll have to make sure you have AC and heat. I didn’t build it. It was a old bunkhouse. I moved into a horse boarding facility so it is half tack room and half do
@@MrTKD123 Awesome! Thanks for that. It confirms I was on the right track. Before I asked you, I was thinking 20x20ft.
The tension of the arm in the fist is different than with the knifehand. The knifehand can get riugh narrower gaps. Also, you are not supposed to be the knifehand without grabbing. That's what the hand at the waist is for. ruclips.net/video/pLHsAPOnsSU/видео.htmlsi=6rX1nHWIaqi2H1gC&t=151 See the application of knifehand in that video. You are not supposed to just throw your hand out. The crossing of the arms used in knifehand is a block. You can block withh the hand that is going to sdtrike and then grab and pull with the other hand and take the other guy off balance whilst you strike his neck. Or you can block with the non-striking arm and elbow with the crossed striking arm and then do a knifehand to the back of the neck. The neck is not a hard target you do not need to apply the most powerful strike in the world. Just something that is fast and smooth and easily deployed. You would not see the knifehand in UFC because (a) open hand techniques are illegal. You won't see palm strikes either for the same reason. And (b) because most people don't understand knifehand and think it's done by just flicking out your hand. Nope. Grabbing is involved too.
Fighting is no style. Fighting is one thing there is no style. TKD can work if you learn to make it work within the context of fighting. If you cannot grapple then you cannot fight. High kicks aren't bad for everybody. The legs are the strongest part of your body and if you land a flush head kick you can end a fight very fast. It isn't for everybody it is about adopting your body for the style of fighting that suits you best. There is no style.
If you train like a gladiator you wont be able to keep training partners because you will get injured. Train hard in the weight room and do mostly light sparring.
What do you think of ATA Martial arts I got up to black belt in it
I like do there fighting technique's but I never liked doing there katas
I done WTF Taekwondo got up to red belt in that style but I combine two styles of Taekwondo together
I enjoyed ATA for the most part, I can’t complain about the style. It is really good difficult challenging but I’ve had more problems with it when I had my school. There are just not good people in the ATA. I really enjoy GTMA
Hello. Last week, I called a local representative of ATA to inquire about their curriculum. They informed me that they view Tae Kwon Do as a sport and do no self-defense training. They do train sparring, but only within competition rules. The woman I spoke to was very clear about the fact that everything they do is based upon them entering into tournaments. She used the following phrase: "People may ask why do you need to dribble a basketball, to which I say, 'Because it's in the rules.'" To me, self-defense is the core of a martial art, not how well you can twirl a Bo staff or being able to execute forms for which you don't even understand their meaning. Maybe ATA is different in other areas, but around me, I wouldn't give them a second thought if you actually want a real system of self-defense. Good luck my friend.
If you're fat and out of shape, no style will work for you
Sorry but all that shit you did looks quite bad.
TKD is more Children and Olympic style Thank to Teenage mutine turtles and power rangers It not for the streets anymore or adults
Practiced TKD back in the mid 80s. Now I’m an Uechi-Ryu practitioner. Totally agree with your statement regarding not thinking your style is the best and pick one that suits you. Thank you for saying that. That’s exactly what I did. It’s not necessarily about style but more importantly, your ability and talent to effectively execute what your style brings to the table, imho.
Boxer here, who also trained Taekwondo back in the late 70s as a kid back in the "blood and guts" glory days of Texas-style American karate. My personal "style" is basically boxing with taekwondo kicks and a mix of concepts from both. I do believe boxing has superior hands and head movement, but old school taekwondo was nothing to laugh at. So I mix them both. People hate "taekwondo" because of two things - WTF (I said it) "olympic" foot-fighting, and McDojo taekwondo programs that give belts (including black belts) to people who are CLEARLY completely out of shape, weak, and totally non-aggressive. As a KID the training I underwent was pretty serious, not a kids daycare program. Everyone was expected to demonstrate a warrior spirit and warrior capability at whatever level they were at. That is missing in a lot of today's taekwondo schools. Back then, it wasn't just an athletic activity but a method of kicking butt to prevent yourself and your loved ones from being victims, to stand tall and above the average, to be the best one could be. That same attitude is what I find in boxing, and I'm glad to see it's still alive in your school.
@@athenry I could not agree with you more that’s exactly my my feeling and in my personal opinion and I’ve seen a lot of of this through my years the instructors and school owners that are soft on their students are just setting them up to fail if the time comes where they really need to use their style in either competition or real world scenario. Really good points I like him
A lot of MMA fighters came from a TKD background. Joe Rogan and Bad Ass Bas Rutten are two notable examples that come to mind. If you have ever seen Bas fight, in addition to his grappling skills which he and all other MMA fighters pick up on the way, his striking was brutal. Rutten would just plough through his opponents with lethal, hard hitting strikes, especially those kicks to the inner thighs, before taking someone down. If you ever have been in the receiving end of a kick to the head which has knocked you senseless into the middle of next week, you certainly wouldn't regard TKD as lame. I started TKD (ITF) in the 1970s and got up to 2nd dan before branching into other martial arts, including boxing, wing chun, jujutsu, aikido and judo. My instructor was a Korean All Army champion back in the day and he trained us the same way he was taught, i.e. with a combat mind-set. Although Judo is now my main martial art due to my age, I am very confident my TKD will serve me well in a street fight, of which I have had many. The thing I love about it is its simplicity and that, according to both Bruce Lee and Albert Einstein, my friends, is the key to brilliance. The thing is this - all martial arts have limitations but they also have something to offer. Just stay open-minded and you will learn so much more. Peace, bothers and sisters.🙏
There are actually traditional TKD guys out there doing the old Korean karate that are adopting the terms Tang Soo Do ,Kong Soo Do and dropped TKD name. Some are learning the old hyungs(kata)...in fact that picture of the Korean you have H.U.Lee did call it Tang Soo Do when he first came here.
@@Joe-m6c yea that’s what I found out when I was doing some research on him and I trained Tang Soo Do for a little while and really like it so it kind of makes me happy that at least I have that lineage.
@@MrTKD123H. U. Lee was the first teacher of Chuck Norris.
Takes longer to get black belt? More training fees?
Yea it appears that all the curriculum in BJJ is in the color belt timeline And yeah, you are gonna get really really good black belts that way absolutely
@MrTKD123 True
Bjj blue belt here. The correct ranking is white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Some even become red belts. But there are many bjj schools that do formal belt testing. But all do have a curriculum for each belt. Most white belts that are brand new are not aware of this. The schools that do a more formal approach to testing do live rolls/sparring with the instructor and even different belt opponents where they are tested to see how that handle themselves in specific scenarios and positions. Also they are tested to see if they know the moves for that belt level. White belt is the survival belt so you are required to know a small number of submissions but multiple ways to escape bad positions and even a few takedowns. Each belt has different requirements even among schools that do not do formal testing. The schools that do promotions without tests still have them but it's usually in secret and discussed amongst the upper belts and the coach if the person is ready to be promoted. The instructor will usually have a roll/sparring session with the student and test him in areas without his knowing to see if he/she has progressed to be promoted. Some schools require you to compete before getting your next belt but not necessarily with the goal of coming in first place depending on the students goals. If they are a competitor than maybe first second or third may be required. But if they are a casual or hobbyist they may need to only compete once before getting their first belt in their journey. Only a small amount of gyms do that method. Some gyms also look at the age and physical limitations of the person and count that towards their progress or if the student cross trains in wrestling, judo or some other grappling art and that too will significantly effect their promotion speed. Hope that all helps!
@ yes it’s dose thank you. I really do appreciate the information on BJJ.
I trained in Karate, then TKD, then 2 different styles of Hapkido. Tiger Shark Hapkido and Elite Combat Hapkido.. I like training in different styles, next up I'm looking for either Kempo or Philippines style escrima and blades, and looking for Wing Chun. Hapkido is actually a combination of TKD, Aikido, and Jiu Jitsu in one it's a great style to learn.
@@chrisbiggerstaff3083 I really like that idea of training multiple styles I did for a short time but for me it just got too much and at my age it’s kind of. I’m just gonna stick to what I’m doing right now.
@MrTKD123 I just followed what Bruce Lee said about the glass of water basically.
I run a home dojo training my sons in the art of Okinawan/shotokan karate. We are part of an organization that united Kenpo, Kyokushin, Shotokan, Enshin, Ashihara, and Sentou Karate styles, with full contact sparring. It’s nothing like point sparring(IPPON or Koryugi) etc, nothing like you would see in the Olympics or most sport karate tournaments. To us, karate is first for self defense, and I would say the same for taekwondo. My Sandan is in Karate, so I cannot speak for TKD. You tell me. However, the sport aspect can be fun for those who choose to engage in it. Much respect to taekwondo. A good friend of mine teaches Chung Do Kwan style near me in my city. We still spar, but it’s not the same as you see in sport karate. We do punch the face if we are wearing head gear. If not then it’s just kicks to the face.
That’s really cool Yeah, tae kwon do can’t lie. It can be a little soft depending on the instructor and the organization. I’ve got my bell run quite a few times and I i’ve had some pretty aggressive sparring matches so full contact yes but hopefully not putting someone in the hospital. Lol How long have you been training?
Your boring !...

@@philosopher8052 I know my eternal grand Master did bareknuckle back in his day
Hey man - I'm a combat sports dilettante who's mainly trained in freestyle wrestling, Muay Thai and BJJ, and I absolutely love Taekwondo. I love that it retained the culture of traditional martial arts, and love that it's competitive combat sports in the Olympics. I love that it's a combat sport, but not a thuggish blood sport. I think the footwork and kicks are just beautiful. You are making the right decision to stick with TKD - the beauty of an art lies in its specialisation.
@@marchowe1629 thanks I was thinking about moving different styles, but I just can’t. I like this one too much. Do you train tae kwon do
@@MrTKD123 I've considered training in TKD but unfortunately, I probably don't have the time. I'll likely stick to freestyle wrestling (but remove shots to knee) and do Muay Thai for cardio. If I had kids though, I think TKD is ideal. Especially for a girl.
@@marchowe1629 sweet yeah sounds good to me
TAE KWON DO
I have seen other channels exploring the idea of using knife hand or open hand techniques for grabbing or for using them as frames.
I do sanshou, and the only time I was ever knocked out was by a TKD person. An art is what YOU make it. My only beef with TKD is the hierarchical structure foisted upon students, but this is an issue with many traditional martial arts.
I'm a boxer, who now practices ITF taekwon-do I've met people who do WT and ATA and both have some good practitioners. Taekwon-do the art has a lot of holes in it but so to BJJ and any other art, yes I've done BJJ as well. The bottom line is we need to use what works and disguard what doesn't ,also whether you doing Aikido or Muay thai doesn't matter as long as you enjoy your art. The problem comes in when people have unrealistic expectations of their art and want to mimic movies or UFC atheles. On my journey I'm opening to learning from other arts I'm not dogmatic and I respect all oponents no matter what they practice.
Amen to that - very well articulated.
Old style Moo Duk Kwan and ITF taekwondo are intense!🏆
The style I train is a mix of these 2! We train palgwe and hyung forms and call it "traditional taekwondo" and I would agree. Our sparring looks different from other tkd dojangs as we tend to punch more and fight from a closer range often. More self defense oriented.
.Good luck with your new channel MR TKD - I was fortunate enough to have attended various forms of Martial Arts, throughout my life, starting with Karate as a seven year old ; in times of extreme trouble or bad luck , my own "Fortitude" always surprised me & I believe it came from all those endless hours/decades of ' learning & training ' Martial Arts & some boxing in there also .. .... at 56yrs of age , I still go for simple work outs, even if it's just breathing exercises & luckily still benefiting from it (+ regular work-outs even helping with injury ) ..🙏
I'm a student with GTMA out of jacksonville, Florida. You may know about my school with Master Roderick
The only Master out of Jacksonville that I know is grandmaster William Clark still getting to know the folks in the GTMA How long have you been training GTMA

Good Stuff. Sometimes it's best your school doesn't grow because you can get more personalized attention and go everyday. I knew an old man that taught JKD for free and would only take a hand full of students. If you didn't put your heart and soul into training he would tell you to go home and not come back. If you were terrible but tried your best. You could stay. He also taught humility, restraint and respect for others. None of which I possessed at the time, but learned.
The problem is that since TKD is the "most popular" you're going to get a huge variety of uncontrolled quality. Most people are not martial arts literate. No one dojo/studio represents the entirety of a style. TKD can be applied for self-defense, discipline, showcasing, a sport or a daycare to drop kids off at for an hour. Marketing yourself as something DISTINCT is important.
