      @@808pathfinder Yeah I noticed how fast it heats up if the load draws a lot of current even with a heatseek. Maybe a resistor on the output would help regulate the current draw.

      @@tetraederzufrequenztesla2342 that's a good idea. The lm317 is a voltage regulator that limits the current draw as well I believe. That should stop the mosfet or transistor from overheating.

    While it makes a good variable output voltage source, as a regulator not so much. If the load changes, the voltage will need adjusted to compensate. So variable output, yes, regulator, no! However nice simple setup. Thumbs Up!

      The circuit is a simple "source follower" setup where the voltage at the source follows the voltage set by the potentiometer. This leads to three problems, one minor and two major.
      The minor problem is that the output voltage changes with the load current, but not by much. The output impedance is the reciprocal of the forward transconductance (minimum of 19 S from the data sheet), so the output voltage will drop by about 0.05 volts per amp.
      The first major problem is that the output voltage changes *directly* with any change in input voltage, so there is no regulation as such, and no ripple or noise rejection.
      The other major problem is that without a heatsink, the IRFZ44N has a temperature rise of up to 62 C per watt. A circuit similar to one demonstrated used to drive a 12V LED from 29V supply would drop (29-12) = 17 volts across the MOSFET. If 1 amp of current were provided, it would produce (17 x 1) = 17 watts in the transistor, potentially raising its junction temperature by as much as (62 x 17) = 1,054 degrees Celsius.
      These MOSFETs were designed for switching operations where they are either fully on or fully off. Using them in linear applications requires a sizeable heatsink.

    Many wonder how many amperes you can absorb, if as in the video you provide an input of 24V and an 12V output load, without the heatsink, you can deliver 0.167 amperes, because this transistor can dissipate only 2 Watts.

    This type of circuit can be used for short term or for education purpose...but practically can not be used due to huge energy conversion...

      @@lilasouza9375 na verdade eu ainda não montei, mais a saída 12v da fonte é ligada sim na entrada do circuito, assim pode sair 1~12v do circuito!

    Output voltage will change with load currennt. Can't say this circuit is voltage regulator. You can say it is alalog variable power supply.

    Nice idea im going to make it.i have a epson dc motor its 12 to 42 volts. I test my dc power supply to a epson dc motor, around 19 volts the motor will start to spin faster.my favorite part is i like when the motor start spinning in reverse at 19 volts or greater with the blade attached to it while spinning And i see sparks when i be in the dark lol.

    It ia not working for me...i dont know why i placed 5v as input and trying to control the brightness of a led diode but the led glows very dim at full pot rotation towards the drain side...i checked the voltage it was 2v at max pot rotate...
    Any fix please tell...

    No recuerdo muy bien si soporta 18 amper y 50 Volt. Se debe colocar el transistor en una buena placa de alumino, antes de colocarlo en la placa de aluminio deben aplicar crema silicona de transferencia de calor solo eso evitara' que se queme el transistor.

      No this is just a linear step down circuit meaning that the voltage can only go to and below VCC. This circuit is not recommended to build.

    Using a MOSFet in this way is foolish. Mosfets are great devices because of their super low resistance when fully turned on. Low resistance=low heat loss. This circuit not only has no way to compensate for changing loads, but the Mosfet will overheat because its not fully turned on. You have to turn it on all the way, then off again very quickly so that you have a pulse. That's what a pulsewidth modulated (pwm) circuit does. If you want less output, then make your pulses shorter so less time passing power. You want more output, make the pulses stay on longer per second. Keeping with the simple concept of this design, use a 555 timer as the input to the gate, not a 10k pot.

      For me the best solution is to buy a switching power supply.
      But if u want create a circuit at home, the easiest way is a linear psu.
      Transformer, full bridge rectifier, capacitor and a Lm7812.
      But this ic can output max 1amp.
      U have to add an external power transistor to amplify the current capability on this circuito.
