I drove my son's new model 3 home from the showroom (about 120Km) alone, at his insistence. Could not have been easier. Clearly the future of motoring. I am not all that old though, only 80.

That was very impressive that he had no range anxiety and trusted the navigation system to direct him to superchargers.

    • @VoxelLoop
      @VoxelLoop 3 года назад

As a 2 year Model 3 owner, I was a little worried when the navigation said he'd arrive with 9%, but he actually arrived with 13% anyway and I know from experience it rarely ever says you'll arrive with more than you will, it's almost always exactly on the percentage if you've driven the car a bunch before and it has learned from how you drive. (That's my theory at least)
I need to have more faith in the navigation I think. :)

Your dad makes the most important point. Petrol/diesel cars *can* do long distances, but the human bladders/stomachs they carry cannot! I'd do 9 hrs with 2 stops, not 3, so the LR may be the one for me on a trip like this.

Just amazing - such a great setup too, not saying much about how to use it and seeing how it goes. I managed to find some Tesla rentals in the UK that delivered to the airport and did my last 2 UK road trips in an X and a S before financing my own Model 3 when I got back to Canada, the road trip rental is the best way to dispel all the anxieties around EV ownership and driving.

Do you have any experience of the new Made In China M3 Performance having such issues? Nobody seems to know if it's down to the new batteries, or the heat pump scavenging heat, or just a few anomalies. It would be really helpful to see some acceleration tests across the 2020 / 2021 M3s at different levels of charge 🙏

I've never used a Tesla or Supercharger before but thinking about buying one. At 2:38 it looks like the charging speed is 27KW. Is this normal or has it just slowed down because the battery is over 80%? I thought Superchargers were 120kw minimum. Also I think it's a bit of a cop out giving your dad a Tesla to learn about EVs on. Give him a gen 1 Leaf with a 60 mile range and let him have some fun on the public chargers :D.

    • @RSEV
      @RSEV  3 года назад +2

Fast charging happens at low state of charge and it continually tails off.
On a long trip you typically run it low and then jsut top up to 70% or so - because it’s enough for another couple hours driving and chargers are plentiful.
Quick short stops are a faster journey than trying to top up more full in one or two.

It's a good job that you gave your dad a Tesla for his first trial
My recent experience of a long trip in my 4 year old Ioniq turned out to be quite fraught
Setting off in torrential rain didn't help M5,j3 heading south
    135 mile range
As travelling down Michael's Woods services Out of Action according to Zap-Map
Next services Gordano also out of action
    Next was Sedgemoor yes working
I couldn't park up near the bays as it was busy
I found out I was the fourth inline
Having less than 20 miles left gave me no choice but wait in the rain
Got talking to the guy 2nd inline who said the vehicle on charge had been on nearly an hour
    We heard the charger stop
The driver promptly got out unplugged then plugged back in

    • @michaelbruton3537
      @michaelbruton3537 2 года назад +1

      I'll continue
He sat on the charger for another hour despite being challenged about his selfish behaviour
Nearly 4hours later did I get to charge for 30 minutes still tipping down of rain
Finally off the motorway and on the A30
First services an oriental guy was charging but when he'd finished couldn't get his car to release the cable
Bye now the rain was torrential
      He eventually got it released
By then a queue had formed for this single charger
I tried for what seemed an age to get it to start up it kept giving different error messages
Finally got it to start but had to rush off to the toilets soaked through
Came back to the car with the wife shouting its stopped
I'd gained 2 miles but couldn't get it to restart so in frustration pulled out of the way and let someone else try
      Still torrential downpour
Looking at options we would just make it to another charger
Found it on a private. Carpark with 15 minutes before closing
I was in the red zone and relieved to be the only one to charge
I thought do it the easy way tap and charge it came up with the message Contactless payment not available ahh
Tried opening the app to get my account details wouldn't work
So used my wife's phone to ring the helpline listed
After telling my tales of woe the kind gentleman said he would try to start it remotely
Success but he couldn't take a payment
A security man came up and asked how long would I be
I said it would be around another 10 minutes
He said okay but to close the gates as I left
With an 80% charge we set off on another 50 miles to get to our destination just outside of Newquay Cornwall
      A 12 hour journey
      Physically and mentally exhausted
In four years of owning and driving my EV have never endured so much hassle
All because of single chargers and the newer EV,s with the larger batteries taking so long to charge
The infrastructure is not coping now with demand
City driving fine but open roads and out of the way places you can't plan for delays that I experienced that day in August

Many canny EV drivers use an app, such as ZapMap or A Better Route Planner. These people saying "aww its too long to charge, not enough mileage". This video proved that completely wrong. Having superchargers ends the first argument, but most of all, people themelves will have to take breaks no matter what vehicle they're in. Having the car sitting in a parking space or sitting at a charger while you go have a wee and a coffee/food is the same in the end.

i did a 9 hour drive from isle of sky to Manchester with just one break of 15 mins in my Jaguar ICE car. I dont thinkg that would be possible any time soon. Time is always important i think al the electric fans forget that. With eletric cars, the charging time is too slow & you cant have an adhoc journey you have to plan it & have to have a plan b.

The Tesla Model 3 was never going to be a problem on a long journey such as this because of the Tesla Supercharger Network. This same journey would have been more challenging in another car that's not a Tesla. I smell another long journey video in a non-Tesla car coming soon 😂

400 miles Glasgow (charged to 95%) to Duxford total charging 28 minutes over two stops (20 minutes and 8 minutes) although the second was more just a stop for the toilet. It’s a bit of challenge for other EV’s not Tesla. The Car sat for three hours at a site on the way down near York unfortunately an airfield the run would have been even easier if it had charging of any type. The waypoints has never made sense to me I’d want it as well don’t understand why you’d limit how customers use their navigation. I tour the highlands and it would be useful to know what time and miles to different points on your journey.
I’m from Glasgow I’d watch you don’t try a Scottish accent when your up 😂 Euro central is such a dire place to wait, I feel your pain. Tesla could learn a thing by asking locals where they would suggest for sites. Balloch (Loch Lomond) has a huge parking area near a shopping centre on the bank of the loch and the gateway to the highlands. Granted Fort William got a SC site. But Ullapool could do with a good site or Durness for the North coast 500.
We have a great charge network called “Charge Scotland” yes it’s slower but free and sites are numerous in most villages and towns. Subsidised by the Scot gov to keep it free plus we produce now more than 120% Electricity through renewables of our needs so the government welcomes anyone charging.

Don't recharge to more than 80% because the recharge will slow down too much.

I discovered that: certainly anything over 90% takes a long time to 'go in' and 'comes out' very quickly.

I believe it is an option not fitted to that car. It had cruise control (very useful) and only basic lane control (no use at all)

Good Video , however he has been spoilt with only having to use Tesla network. Wonder if it would have been a different story if had to use Ecotrocity and public network??

Gridserve look set to change all that in the next 3 to 4 years.....Plus Connected Kerb UK are installing a further 30,000 public charging connections in 2022 alone.

Why a ST+ ? The shortest range Tesla. A LR would’ve only required 1 stop.
