    For those who are new to this song: safe sex refers to AIDS; Ronnie's got a new gun refers to President Reagan.

    • @user-sm3ii5dk1u
      @user-sm3ii5dk1u Месяц назад

      In the context of the times the "new gun" refers to the start of the "Star Wars" space based defense strategy that Ronald "Raygun Ronnie" advanced which bankrupted the USSR and led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and relative freedom for half of Europe. Gains of course we are now throwing away over NATO needing to have a dick-waving contest. Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Two Tribes was another excellent song highlighting the stupidity of the boys in charge.

    This song came out while Eastern Europe regimes were falling. So it looked like the Cold War was won by the West. It was a time that after decades of tension and fear of nuclear annihilation, we had no more enemies. The future looked like it would be peace. China was our friend. Eastern Europeans were clamoring for goods, especially bananas, for some reason. Unfortunately, that feeling of freedom has not lasted.

    • @jek4837
      @jek4837 Месяц назад +9

      Yep. I grew up in that time. Everything was about Russia vs. the US and the Cold War tension. Movies reflected it (all the foreign enemies were the Russians/communists). In the mid-80's, there was a massive explosion at a refinery that was about 8 miles away from my house. The guy who lived behind me came out into his yard screaming "The Russians dropped the bomb! The Russians dropped the bomb!".

      It was only a feeling.
      Anyone who understood anything could tell that: the ideas and future you iterate above was NOT coming or happening!
      ...however: yes: most people (certainly Americans) 🤷🤷🤦/ ignorantly or foolishly, refused to recognize or acknowledge that.
      Now we are where we are (and *I*, bitterly, regret all of the things which I could see having been improved & dealt with wisely ...prepared for
      ...but weren't.)
      ...but most don't seem any wiser or more informed (or with any better capability at accurate, useful analysis).
      ...and: the debilitating problems and issues which are ongoing ("already here!") as well as: which can. clearly, be SEEN/RECOGNIZED coming:
      those are NOT-AT-ALL being address or prepared for (which they must be).
      I don't want to see the world in 25 years.
      It will be an unmitigated horror.
      😡🤬👎

    • @user-sm3ii5dk1u
      @user-sm3ii5dk1u Месяц назад

      @@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra You obviously are too young to have grown up during the actual times of the intense cold war. It was very real fear on both sides and it was the closest the world has been to destruction, including these local skirmishes today. Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev showed incredible courage and intelligence to talk, to meet, to trust, and then to act in dragging their war industries toward peace and freedom. The world will be fine in 25 years. Blackrock and the other oligarchs will be liquidated and a new round of conservative, intelligent leaders will bring society back to the relative peace we could have had in the 90s. Russia asked to join NATO before the 2014 invasion into Crimea, and US/UK said no. That choice could have led to a long peace and partnership. Instead lying and backstabbing has led to ever escalating war. But, common sense will win.

    I turned 18 and joined the US Army in 1988, one of the things a friend of mine who is about the same age as me pointed out that people our age grew up expecting the world to end any moment. We spent every day knowing that the Soviets could drop the bomb any day. Only to wake up one day in our 30s and finding out that it never did.
    The line in the song about waiting for the boom, is how we all grew up.

    I was in high school when this song came out. The girls would all whip our hair around at the “wild, wild hair” part. And let me tell you, that took some effort in the late eighties with the volume of Aquanet we were wearing! 😂. Thanks for doing this one. Good memories!

    That was a blast from my past. After high school my girlfriend and I moved out west, all the way from MA to Tucson, AZ in the late 80s, just as this song became popular. It was fun, because the Wild West was brand new to us, and we were young and alive, enjoying the local dance clubs and partying it up.

    If you listen to it you will discover that while cool sounding, the drum beat is the same during the whole song. This is also the radio version. The album version is much longer and IMHO better.

    Another 80's NEW ARTIST > Henry Lee Summer: Who's That? The band had some breaks, but not the big break. He opened for 38 Special and other big hair bands of the 8o's. High energy and can really sing! Maybe a cross between David Lee Roth and Michael Bolton and a fun vibe like Huey Lewis. I'd recommend either "Got My Hands On The Radio" Or Wish I Had A Girl Like" in video form. I'm pretty sure you will like. You guys might as well be the first to react to Him, but ya better hurry up.
