To paraphrase Bob Dylan, the only bad thing about a Gordon Lightfoot song is that it ends.
Further to your point about Bob Dylan, in an interview with a reporter, Dylan was asked "how does it feel to be the best songwriter on the planet?" . Dylan replied "I don't know, ask Gordon Lightfoot!"...
He also said it was sad that he (Dylan) didn't write them.
Lightfoot was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. May he Rest in Peace.
I am 73 years old, believe me, this was played on the radio A LOT!
The whole song is a masterpiece expressing his feelings at his lost love, pure poetry. You were born too late, songs like this were the stable of radio from the 70s. This song had huge airplay.
So true. In 1980 when I started working, dad used to sometimes pick me up when I finished & he’d have the radio on in the car. The programme on during the drive featured an kAlbum of the Week’, it was Gordon Lightfoot. Every day that week I heard a song from that album. I recognised each one but had never realised they were all by him. That weekend I bought the album. Hearing him on that radio programme was the start of my love & appreciation of his work.
I think this young generation miss out on a lot by not listening to radio, where else can you hear stuff you never would normally listen to but absolutely love it?
Such a beautiful song, he paints pictures in your mind, fabulous artist
Here in Canada,Gord was a staple on the radio. He is our unofficial Poet Laureate. He wrote and sang stories for us all
Luckily for those of us in the US, he got his fair share of radio time here also.
@@stpetie7686 I didn't know that---Outstanding---Glad he was shared :)
Half of Wisconsin is north of Orillia Ontario-we claim him too!
Gordon was a national treasure in Canada. He was one of Bob Dylan’s favourite songwriters . He wrote over 250 songs, his catalogue is huge. He has been covered by many artists….Elvis, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan , Barbra Streisand and many more. He was a wonderful storyteller “ The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald “ ( true story ), “ Black Day in July “ ( true story ). He was commissioned to write a song for Canada’s centennial in 1967….. “ The Canada Railroad Trilogy “ which was also a favourite of American audiences. Sadly he passed away last year R.I.P. dear Gordon🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
The perfect song. Perfect lyrics, perfect arrangement, perfect playing, perfect harmonies... a perfect dagger to the heart. Genius.
Perfect post
Oh yes!
Gordon was the master in telling a story in song.
RIP Gordon
My wife divorced me a few years ago and i found this song and it always bring a tear to my eyes
Stay strong 👍🎶🎸
thank you, im ok now, time heals, xx@@derwahreguetige
Much love from both of us 💚
thank you ❤@@MerchantOfAlba
reminds me of my ex and her unreal expectation i should be able to read her mind..people say it out loud..tell your spouse what ur thinking...
The reason I enjoy your reactions to great music begins with how you two relate to each other. You don't read each other's mind, but you start with a shared foundation and then seek to understand further through listening and sharing. Most importantly you both seem to quickly be concerned with the other when the emotions are touched deeply. It is a pleasure to see. My best wishes for your continued happiness together .
Thank you kindly 😊 Warm wishes from both of us 💚
Thiwas one of Gordon’ very personal songs as it was about the breakup of his first marriage. One of my favourite love songs by Gordon is “ Song for a Winter’s Night “.
Gordon Lightfoot's catalog of work is vast, and is full of great music, a fantastic path to take, RIP Gordon! I'd suggest "Song For A Winter's Night", and "Don Quixote", you guys are a very enjoyable viewing experience!
Don Quixote is his best album.
Gordon was a true poet and a national treasure RIP Legend.
I’ve heard it a hundred times, and it gets me the same as the first time. Simply gorgeous.
As a lifelong Lightfoot fan, I think both of you embody Gordon's song "Beautiful." I would love to see your reaction to this classic even though it was not a huge radio hit. Also his song "Rainy Day People", it's so tender and passionate ❤
Canada’s most talented singer songwriter or at least tied for first with Joni Mitchell and Neil Young! This and many of Gordon’s songs were played on FM radio stations in the New York City area! A legend whose songs will love as long as music lives!
I'd add Leonard Cohen as well. 😊
A beautiful sad song.
This music was all over the radio back in the day. It was our generation's music. Good times.
We still have "oldies" radio stations in America that play some of it now.
Guess I'm an oldie, too. Those are the stations I listen to!😊
Lightfoot's teenage daughter told him that she didn't like the line, "The feelings that you lack" because that makes it sound like the divorce was the fault of his ex-wife...but it was both their faults. So, when Gordon sang it live, he always sang, "The feelings that we lack".
The 1970s, after breakup of The Beatles, has been called the decade of “The Singer-Songwriter”.
Gordon Lightfoot was one of the Best, along with Carole King, Neil Diamond, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Elton John, Jim Croce, Billy Joel, John Denver, Seals & Croft, David Gates, England Dan (Seals) & John Ford Coley, Hall & Oates, Eric Carmen, Lara Nyro, Paul Williams, and Dave Mason.
When I first heard this song I was 10 yrs old. I would stop what I was doing to listen
Jim croce "time in a bottle" another master song writer x :)
If I can request a song by Gordon Lightfoot it would be "Canadian Railroad Trilogy." It is fantastic and probably Gordon's greatest song, though there are so many others would dispute this, LOL! Anyway, that is guaranteed to please you and tell you some of Canada's history. Canada is a great country and I think you will be more than satisfied with this song. 😄
Mr. Lightfoot was a songwriter I describe as a 'wordsmith'. His lyrics create a beautiful ship and his music floats that ship, moves that ship. Now that you have seen the ship, Andre, go back and listen to the water. Acoustic guitar, bass and strings. Beautiful! ☮❤🎶
Gordon was an iconic storyteller as well as a musician. We truly miss him.
One of my absolute favorite singer/songwriters ! "Minstrel of the Dawn" is another masterpiece which is semi-autobiographical.
Boy, could Gordon Lightfoot ever write poignant songs about heartbreak. If you haven't already done it, hear his great song "Early Morning Rain."
Thank you for your sincere appreciation for a Canadian Legend. He was a beautiful man who loved his country and stayed true to his values. He felt it necessary to keep alive the memories of the heroes of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the native Canadians who were here long before the white man. He was always approachable as he never allowed his ego to interfere with his genuine love of people. A true artist who has stirred emotions with his lyrics and amazing voice. He is missed but never forgotten. Thank you Gordon for the treasure trove of wonderful memories.
Singer, songwriter, poet and storyteller all rolled into one… Heartfelt reaction and response. R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot 👊🏻
Oh Gordan Lightfoot was on the radio all the times back in the time of the Singer Songwriter ☮️
About 12 years ago, I was in Pennsylvania at a Lightfoot concert. My seat was off to the side pretty close to the stage (about ten yards). Halfway through the performances, " I yelled out "Play Read Your Mind!"
Gordon looks up whimsically from his guitar and says" Yeah, I'm going to get to THAT one."
The whole crowd erupted in laughter.
Great memory to have an informal engagement with a legend.
WAY TO GO GUYS!!! 👍TIMELESSSSS CLASSIC ANDREI AND DOMENICA! 😊R.I.P☹GORDON!
The production and orchestration are exquisite, overshadowed by Gordon's unmatched lyrics and vocals.
When you put beautiful poetry like this to such emotionally evocative music, you get a song that will live on through time. Gordon Lightfoot is such a poet.
Can I just say that more than your reactions (which I love) I adore the dynamic you two have. It's so sweet, respectful, and pure. Thank you!
Thank you so much!! ☺️
This song was written to describe the end of his first marriage.
I cried all the way through this song. I always have. I just don't have any other words. Thank you for reacting to Gordon Lightfoot. He was simply heartbreakingly beautiful.
I went to college on the Canadian border. I grew up in northern Michigan in the US, so many of his songs got lots of radio play while I was growing up... and of course in my college town. He's got an incredible catalog of beautiful songs.
Gordon was a poetic genius
Peace and Love from Canada. ❤
I have not heard this in so long. I never knew who sung it. A really sad song, but sung so beautifully. RIP Mr Lightfoot 🙏
IVE LOVED THIS SONG SINCE IT CAME OUT I WAS 10 OR 11YRS OLD. I LOVE MOST OF HIS MUSIC!!!AGREED THE LOVE OF ANOTHER IS ALWAYS THE HARDEST TO LOSE. I LOVE THE HAPPY ONES TOO BUT NO GOOD WITHOUT THE BAD RIGHT?
Gordon Lightfoot got a lot of radio airplay you just missed it by 30-40-50+ years, great reaction as always
As a CANADIAN ,I'm always pumping up OUR artists but Gordon is an absolute ICON for sure......Oh Canada !
The flip side of this 45, Poor Little Allison is also very good. Good reaction, you two.
For anyone who is interested, here is a list of good Lightfoot songs with links. Almost every song on his early albums was good so one cannot really make a list that can do him justice.

Gordon wrote many beautiful songs. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
My favorite song by him was his first hit "Early Morning Rain". Having spent a very large part of my life on the road, that song really hit home for me. May not be that popular with fans of today because it was very early in his carreer and people just dont know about it but back in the day it was a big deal. It was covered by Presley, Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, The Grateful Dead, Oliver , Jerry Reed, The Kingston Trio and Neal Young just to name a few
One of Gordon's earliest hits is "Early Morning Rain", a great song that was later covered by Peter, Paul and Mary. Please react to Gordon performing "Early Morning Rain".
This man was SUCH a GREAT STORY WRITER!!! Love his lyrics!! HUGS, YA'LL!!!
Beautiful song from a legendary singer songwriter. A Canadian Icon. I had the pleasure of seeing him several times live in concert in the 70s and 80s here in Canada 🇨🇦❤
RIP, Mr. Lightfoot.
Gordon's songs are still played on the radio today he and they were that good and influential ❤🇨🇦
I like hearing you both talk about how the song affected you. 😊🙂🙃☺🤗
I always put this down as my 3rd favorite song of all-time.
gordon lightfoot was all over the radio in the 1970 s when i was kid in the in canada
It's always nice to say that Gordon Lightfoot was born in the same town I was born in, and it's still my hometown to this day. He's held in high regard in my town and that's pretty cool how someone on the other side of the world, right now, is listening to him and I'm watch you listen to him. Neato! He was a great singer/songwriter in Canada and here in Ontario, Canada, we heard him on the radio regularly, at least in Southern Ontario.
This song reached #5 on the Billboard Chart here in America
How is it possible to get to their age and have never heard this iconic song
PEACE, COMFORT, TRANQUILITY, YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!! 😊THIS, CAREFREE HIGHWAY AND SUNDOWN ALLLLLLLLL BIG RADIO PLAYS YOU GUYS! 💯
All this music was all over the radio back in my day and some oldies stations still play it. You guys are just so sweet and it's so apparent how much you love each other.
you guy's did great on this song I haven't heard this in literally years thank you 😊
No other reactors radiate the love for each other as you two.
He was going through a divorce, and his daughter had him change one line - I think it was "I don't know where we went wrong..." In the first version, it sounded as if he was blaming his wife, as in "I don't know where you went wrong..." I am not sure of the exact wording, but Gordon listened to his daughter and changed the line. This came out as I was becoming a teenager, and of course, I fell in love with him and the song. Going on 67, and I still love it!
If You Could Read My Mind" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. Lightfoot wrote the lyrics while he was reflecting on his own divorce. It reached No. 1 on the Canadian Singles Chart on commercial release in 1970 and charted in several other countries .
Wonderful song!!
Lovely song....quite simply👏👏
Sundown is another great one!
Yes. This music was played on the radio. All the time.
My favorite song for 40 years and you gave me new insight on it .
Your reactions are genuine.
Your reaction at the end says it all. Such a great song! My favorite from Gordon. 👍❤
Beautiful song. He pulls you in his music.
Was blessed to have the chance to see him live a few years back in PA. Wonderful night
As a Canadian...we have preference for the poetic. Gordon Lightfoot, the bare Naked Ladies, and the incomparable Tragically Hip. Truly 🇨🇦 classics.
You're in for a treat... this is something special.
In the beginning (Chained Ghost) that was his way of telling her he felt trapped by their fading relationship with kids involved. The 2nd stanza was how she felt, and she was hurt also. Then he was like if you just read between the lines (1st two portions) you can see I am just trying to understand why you stopped loving me (the feelings that you lack....not left as the words said on the screen stated....).
I have always loved this song, and its a needed song for those going through this, they have someone else to lean on so to speak. So its not for the PERFECT BLISS TYPES like you 2. SMILE.
the end of this song gives you goosebumps.
This is from my era, but it reminds me of Silent Skies doing The Eurythmics song "Here Comes the Rain Again". Absolutely beautiful.
Gordon Lightfoot has a huge library of incredible music from his early days in Nashville to his folk music of the late 60s and early 70s and then transitioning into more mainstream music. Gordon was an incredible writer and singer, and there are too many wonderful songs for me to choose a favorite from his collection of work. You can never go wrong with anything from Gordon Lightfoot, but unfortunately, many people are only familiar with the songs that the radio overplayed like they do all great music. I always prefer the deeper cuts off of an artist album, and I would recommend reacting to his song "Don Quixote," "Beautiful," or "The Last Time I Saw Her." I believe you will love any of these selections with your love for great music and appreciation for simpler times that both of you demonstrate. I love your honest, authentic, heartfelt reactions.
Another gem of complete beauty and there are so many more from that period. Growing up then had a profound effect on you and there existed a far more compassionate and selfless society which has faded, sadly. We had no idea things would change for the worse.
Just a great reaction guys thank you
Great reaction and comments...another great song by Gordon is: "The Last Time I Saw Her Face". A brilliant masterpiece that is really emotional and hard-hitting. Get ready to shed a tear; if you venture to listen to this one.
One of Lightfoot’s most personal songs, “If You Could Read My Mind” was written about his deteriorating marriage to first wife Brita Ingegerd Olaisson. The couple were married in 1963 and had two children together, Ingrid and Fred, before their divorce in 1973. At the request of his daughter, Lightfoot made one slight alteration to the verse I’m just trying to understand the feelings that YOU lack. Instead, he sang I’m just trying to understand the feelings that WE lack when performing the song live.
One of my favorite songs! Thanks!
My parents started dating in Toronto hung in similar circles. His music surpassed Catholicism in my house. Both of my grandfathers worked on the railroad. I never got to see him live and sober. 5:29
You can go straight from this song to Jackson Browne's "Late For the Sky." I'm so glad you're focused on the lyrics as much as you are. One of the things I've come to understand about relationships is that love is not a feeling. Love is a verb, not a noun. It's not something you fall into (or out of) helplessly; it's something you do. Something you commit to doing with your covenant partner for the rest of your life. Authentic love is intentional.
"Carefree Highway" is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. It speaks to parts of my life. It makes me feel melancholy but that is ok.
Legendary
I turned 69 today, I have been hearing this since it was new and it Still makes my eyes water a bit...I am so glad I found you, Great react, thank you
Happy belated birthday 🎉🎂
It was a big hit on the radio. Barbra Streisand recorded it after she heard Gordon sing it.
70,000 wow congratulations you guys are a cute couple , greetings from the great state of Missouri ,US
Thank you ☺️💚
Great song. Great reaction. Thanks for getting to this classic. Also check out Gordon's hit "Sundown".
A brilliant song to analyse.
Superb storyteller.
Very nice reaction. Yes, the lyrics are beautiful though sad, and the melody is peaceful & soothing. I enjoyed listsening with you. Please react to Don Quixote (an upbeat song & title track of his 1972 album), Alberta Bound ( another upbeat song!), Early Morning Rain, Beautiful, & Christian Island.
Have always loved this haunting song from Gordon... just beautiful
I am 61 Canadian....it played on the radio all the time...takes me back home
Love you both, they don't make em like they used to
After more than fifty years of hearing this song , I still get choked up and teary when I hear this. Your reaction and thoughts were lovely.
The best bless be
WOW
