For 1st time folks. Mark hoses with painters tape, number them and write where they go in a notebook. That way on the way back to install them you dont miss a single one, mark them off the list and remove the tape (that way if you see tape, you missed it) Group bolts on zip lock bags and write where they go. Mark direction of parts that same way. Great video wish it was out 7 months ago when I pulled my engine out. 😂
In general when you learn a platofrm and do it often, it becomes easier and faster by many hours. You might start off taking days to do to a few hours depending on experience
Just an FYI for anyone doing this, don’t remove the pitch stop. The pitch stop isn’t holding the engine, it’s holding the transmission and has up and down movement so it will not brake. You will have no problem getting the engine out with it in and then you’re not leaving your transmission sitting on 2 shafts and 1 mount.
I love how you say “don’t need to lift the car to pull the engine, remove intake, intercooler, battery, alternator” then removes in reverse order and immediately lifts the car 🤣 love it! I definitely appreciate you breaking it down in a quick tutorial, not overly in depth, not full of filler
A year old vid and still relevant for the weekend broke mechanic. Thanks for the basics. You make it look easy will definitely try it myself when I get my turbo motor. Awesome job brah. 🤙🏽
You may see an increase in views simply because I've been watching this video religiously as I'm currently pulling my 05 WRX motor out. Thanks for the guide man, this is awesome!
Just a tip, when I pull my motors I set the engine leveler front to back and the engine comes in and out so much smoother and no binding during installation

Two questions for you as I am prepping to replace a clutch in my 18' STI (never let you girl drive your STI when the last standard she drove was years ago and was a 90s civic....) any way. 1. do you have to remove the intake manifold to pull the engine, or will the engine come out with the intake still bolted on with all the appropriate connections and hoses removed? 2. I am assuming that with removing the turbo, down pipe, headers and intake etc... that I'll need to replace all the gaskets to these parts as well, correct? Thanks for the awesome video @Smeedia, always look forward to your new videos!
Enjoyed more than watching a movie.learned a lot and feel soo good man.bro after watching these videos on your channel makes me motivate to do more things on my sti without any fear.🍻
Ok can we just all appreciate the amazing type of video that we should all have to pay to watch as the quality is just that good plus the knowledge is everywhere in the video. @Smeedia I hope you get a shit ton of new subs as it would be well deserved. Type of video that should not have a dislike button.
Nice and quick to the point, starting my jdm motor swap project and needed a refresher. Just curious why you removed the intake manifold? Doesnt seem like it gets in the way of anything
Good stuff. I've always just kept the fuel lines connected and just flipped the intake/tgvs off to the side like you would with the ac and power steering units.
Dang Bro! I was literally searching YT yesterday for this exact thing; the whole time I was thinking man, I wish Smeedia had a video on this. Awesome content!
I believe 02-05 wrx and 6 speeds have the pin that needs to be removed because it's a pull style clutch. Push style does not have this so you don't need to worry.
Omg I’m so nervous! Need to grow some forsure lmao. I got leaky valve seals in my 05 waggy and need to pull the motor. Never pulled a motor outta anything in my life. I’m assuming the auto non turbo would be less parts and therefore less hassle, is that assumption correct? Any major differences in removal that you can think of by chance? Thanks again, your hard work never goes unnoticed!
Little more easier because no turbo components in the way but aside from that should be the exact same with the expecting of removing the torque convertor bolts 🙏🔥
So I just did this job and I think we totally forgot to loosen the nuts on the transmission mount before jacking the transmission up 😅 is it absolutely necessary to do that? We were able to jack the transmission up a good amount even with the nuts secured on there but I wasn’t sure if that would cause problems on the mount itself by doing that. I haven’t had a chance to visually check the mount but is it even worth looking at?
I like your Subaru Videos but seems like removing the engine with extra steps lol. Only thing I remove is the radiator starter and down pipe then pull the engine. But great detailed video.
Soooo quick question in a 2010 wrx with the 5 speed it doesnt seem to have the transmission slide pin im guessing the slave cylinder and clutch still have to be removed ? In the process of pulling it
Hey just hit 110k miles on my WRX and all maintenance was done at 100k miles including walnut blast and 18 sti transmission swap anyways lately I've been noticing a faint smell of gas from the interior of the car and oil seeping from the front right coil pack. Is this an indicator of my motor going out or spark plug is loose?
I just spent hours trying to figure out why i couldnt get bolts to thread in above the dowels.... Currently facepalming lmao thanks for helping me figure it out🤣
How to pull the engine out of an automatic transmission? Is it just brute force or do I have to pay attention to something, especially concerning the torque converter?
Quick question bro, it’s safe for an 05 STI engine to used fluorescent leak detection?! Mine is always have a quart low after 1500 miles. I want to used that and than remove the engine and used a UV light to see where engine oil is sipping or leaking. Thank you in advance!

How long did this take you from start to finish? I have been with Ford for the last almost 11 years and Subaru just hired me as a technician. I am a little nervous as I don't know these vehicles that well but this looks way nicer to work on than anything Ford makes.
May need to pull the engine off my BRZ. I think the compression ring aint working anymore. I'm thinking of throwing an OEM short block assuming my heads are still good I'm at 70k miles, 10k of those were hks supercharged miles. Is that advisable? if so do i have to get the heads resurfaced to get a good seal with the new block?

It can be pulled in less than an hour. I think the whole having two heads on opposite sides of the motor scares people.
Depends on who's doing it tbh, idl what shop rates are but I can do it in a afternoon if I have all parts. I normally just do 1.2-1.5K for a straight swap. But heavily dependent on the car. Some shops charge upwards of 5K
What if you have a full tank of gas and your going to swap in a new motor , will all the fuel dump out through the lines or only a little bit Thts basically been sucked up by the pump ?
So I started up my Hawkeye today and the ac idler puller is frozen I was shredding the belt for about a minute cause thought it was serpentine making noise and waited for it to stop making noise.. only had the car a month and honestly am getting nervous that not much maintenance has been done to the car it has 116 thousand miles , how would u go about getting back in a maintenance schedule? Just inspect everything and replace if it looks worn or bad? Like has the fuel line been done at 70 thousand ? Or am I ganna go up in flames ? Also how common is it for the ac idler pulley to go out ? Basically just a bearing that dried out?
Older cars will have the issued more naturally. What I do everytike I buy a used car is swap every serviceable item within reason. Oil change Trans fluid Rear diff Spark plugs Filters etc That way you know when to do them next and that they have been done.

Smeedia. I have a important question. What if I’m putting the motor back in and i got the bottom bracket bolts back in but when try putting the motor in and connect to trans it’s not going. I have the wholes and everything lined up but it’s like the clutch for is in place but belhousing won’t clamp together. What may be the problem. Is there a way I can instagram you that way I can send a picture on where I’m stuck at bro?
Low key. Hardest time I had with pulling my motor was oil return line clamp on the bottom of the turbo…. Absolutely worst area to work in my opinion. That press fit is in the worst spot 😂
@@Smeedia LOL with my crusty old heat cycled oem rubber oil line. I think I tried doing that the first time and couldn't realize why it wasn't coming off. The injectors must be in the TGVs? Sorry guys still kinda a rookie but always looking to learn!
Correct they are located in the TGVs 😁
What sort of total labor time is involved when replacing a long block in one of these? Like a rebuilt long block
Depends on who's doing it tbh, idl what shop rates are but I can do it in a afternoon if I have all parts. I normally just do 1.2-1.5K for a straight swap. But heavily dependent on the car.
Some shops charge upwards of 5K
My 06 legacy gt 5 speed does not have the 14mm fastener to remove the slide pin for the clutch fork... what do I do?
Could you send me photos of where the ground wires go onto the engine from the body? The quick connect small ones.
Used this to pull my 04 wrx engine, my cover for the clutch fork pin, was a 10mm Allen
Dude this a great video. Is there a way u can do this in more slowed down version for us newbies
What do you mean by slown down? 🤔
2010 Forester xt I can't find where the driver side ground wire goes.
The one in the engine harness that has the injector wires in it
Any ideas?
Hi, will a 2018 subaru outback wagon non turbo have a cam carrier leak/drip at 34,000 miles on the car? they are charging me $3555.
Hi, what screw size did you use to get the slide pin out of the transmission? Thanks
looking great man! thanks for this overview of how to get this sht done!
Thank you and anytime!
I have a question will a 06 Ej25 fit a 05 it looks all the same but I'm new to subuarus? Also wondering other year engine will interchange
What if you have a full tank of gas and your going to swap in a new motor , will all the fuel dump out through the lines or only a little bit Thts basically been sucked up by the pump ?
Just a little bit, you don't have to drain it 🙏
Whatever is in the line will spill out a little
@@Smeedia sweet thank you keep up the good work man your the only guy us Subaru brothers love to watch man
Do you have a parts list for all of the parts you replaced?
17:51 - started my build on my 2017sti now is better than never lol
It is now! 🔥
Oil change
Trans fluid
Rear diff
Spark plugs
Filters etc
That way you know when to do them next and that they have been done.
@@Smeedia thanks tanner !, your the best ! Trans fluid and rear diff will be done next payday I’ll be sure to watch your tranny and rear diff change again when the time comes . Thanks again lol some of your videos I watch over just to pound the knowledge into my head and your channel is helping me save this wrx from its previous owner who must have lost the love for the car
Thanks for the details man. It's still intimidating to a non wrencher but the plan is someday i'll feel comfortable enough to pull that sucker out.
The video will be here for ya when the time comes 🙏😁
Just yeet the turbo up after unbolting it and it will slide off 😅🙏
@@Smeedia LOL with my crusty old heat cycled oem rubber oil line. I think I tried doing that the first time and couldn't realize why it wasn't coming off. Do you know if that return line is under pressure anyway or just gravity? I was so determined to have the hose clamp seal that off well. #NoFireGang
Just gravity. Shouldn't be seeing pressure at all,
ya.... master subaru mechanic.
Damn, you make that look so easy! I guess practice makes perfect
More you do it, the easier it gets 😅🙏
GOoD JOB , EXCELLENT VIDEO !!!
