I bought and read this beautiful book he wrote. It brought me to tears. If America ruined this officer’s life then imagine what is being done to innocent detainees/prisoners at Guantanamo. We are a disgraceful nation.
So sorry for what our country did to you Chaplin Yee. We have a long way to go before we can ever consider our country a country with ethics and morals.
It is interesting when he says that “Guantanamo damaged the reputation of the United States”-what reputation? United States has been holding a terrible reputation since it’s foundation and even before. This is a country with an awful and depressing history.
Awful and depressing history, sure. I think viewers of Democracy Now are aware of that history. But for many people around the world America has symbolised ideals of freedom and democracy. I think the atrocities of Vietnam and the War on Terror have undermined that. Russia, China, Iran, etc. use that diminished trust to justify their own abuses. Reality and reputation are obviously different, but maybe if America could get closer to its ideals the whole world would benefit.
@@SasquatchAtTheSpaceDisco first of all, the name of this country is not “America”- by calling this country America you reveal your lack of criticism to the real nature of United States. I have no idea where you have been around the world, but if you go to Europe, or South America, you would encounter a lot of people that has United States as a country with the most questionable reputation. I never been in Africa, but all the Africans I know, not only know the real history of United States, they also resent this country. Also, very few people, at least in the third world, talk about the “democracy” of this country as much as they are aware of the criminal imperialism it has been implementing for almost two hundred years. Believe me, in the Caribbean, in South America, in many parts of Asia and Africa the word imperialism is immediately associated with United States and Europe, but mainly with United States, not whit Russia, not with China. So, I think is time to wake up and smell the coffee.
Camp Guantanamo is a shame like prisons in general, where humanity dies on the first day you are in. What's left of democracy? "Not in my name" must be every Americans duty!
We should all talk about that issue, Muslims or not, as human beings, we have a duty to one another to speak up for anyone being abused, singled out, prosecuted denied rights as human beings . Governments should be afraid of its people not the other way round.
@@yndiiatecow2536 of course they do. Once the u.s. reaches it's objective if it does they won't even remember uighur Muslims. Maybe they'll dedicate a little holiday or a statue. But they we will have all the "real" Americans making fun and hating on the other Muslims.
It's only okay when USA is doing the persecution. If Uyghurs were in America, the same one hating China rn would be the same one supporting their genocide.
Before anyone say anything about the detainees being alleged terrorists. Some probably were legit terrorists, but the majority weren't. So when the US invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, they gave incentives/rewards to whoever had any info on suspected terrorists should approach any US soldiers to let them know. What many villagers did, they would make bogus claims about one of their neighbors, and when the neighbor gets taken, this guy will take their land and the reward from the US. Just like when the British were colonizing India and they started a cobra eradication program. For each cobra dead/alive brought to the Brits, they'd give a reward. So the Indians started breeding their own cobras at home and it became a business. Basically, they all got played by the people they were colonizing.
I’m also thankful that outspoken, outstanding people like you, brother, have given a greater sense of conscience to many already thoughtful people. MashaAllah
Actually, the Arabic language is responsible for these important contributions to humanity. The Islamic faith is just a "divinely appointed way of living" for adherents. It's the only faith to which no one can convert. Anyone can "revert" to Islam. Not "convert".
When it comes to numbers the USA is no different, during the Vietnam war two million Vietnamese were killed. Even worse than Hitler, during the Iraqi sanctions, the USA was able to kill half a million children. However, the Zionist of Madeline Albright indicated that it was worth the price. The nazis used concentration camps , the USA uses sanctions and open concentration camps.
@@Fafnd That sounds like terrorist talk right there. I don't want to live in a civil war because some people are unhappy with the current state of the country. I don't want to get caught up in the middle of your romantic ideas of revolution & being a hero.

Guantanamo does things illegal in the US, which is why it is in Cuba. If we applied our laws on any US base anywhere, we would do the same things in bases operated by other nations. The United States of America has a long and bloody history of doing as it pleases while grandstanding and pearl clutching. Closing Guantanamo wouldn't change anything but our image, because it wouldn't change our behavior. And it is "our" behavior, because so long as we allow ourselves to be deluded into believing that the government serves based on our vote, then we are accountable to what it does because of our vote. If, however, we accept that it does whatever it pleases (often for the profit of business interests, for which we fit the bill in dollars and blood), suddenly it becomes an issue of the ruling elite and their propaganda outlets (like Fox), and then we can do something about it (peaceful or violent. Creating dual power, as with the Zapatistas and Rojava, is a peaceful and proven method that we should all learn from and wish to emulate) and be entirely justified.
We don't need to close Gitmo. We need to house those who chose to torture instead of peace, who chose hatred instead of love, who chose power over people. But I wish in the end, the prison is empty. But it wouldn't be.
