Maybe they should have told Penn Badgley earlier that his character was Gossip Girl. Then Dan wouldn't have looked so damn surprised every time he saw a post - even when he was alone!
Yes and no, i personally like gossip girl as a anonymous person becuse it makes the show more exiting, they could however had made it so he didnt check posts when he was alone or something.
I don't think the writers ever knew for sure who Gossip Girl was. It's easy for them to say NOW "we told you in the first episode when Dan was at the laptop" but the 6 years of writing for Dan says otherwise. I think GG was supposed to stay anonymous, but they changed it to wrap up the show.

the thing is that the creators didn't even know at first lmao, they admitted that in the beginning it was never their intention to reveal who it was so they didn't actually choose someone to be gossip girl but then the fans were like super intrigued by it and making up theories that they were practically forced to choose and reveal who it was. like keep in mind it's based on a book series and in the books GG was never revealed either

Georgina was the perfect gossip girl they just had to ruin it by making her take over the website for a while, they should have made her the original gossip girl, she loved to ruin things and never really got any negative blasts from the gossip girl website and then she hated Serena, she would have been perfect

The writers screwed up by announcing their golden boy as Gossip Girl. It truly makes Dan the villain of the show, because he's the biggest hypocrite. He spent years taking the moral high ground over Serena and her friends, painting Blair and Chuck as a devil twosome when in fact, it was HIM who took charge of a site that was out to humiliate everyone. No wonder Penn is embarrassed to talk about it.

I don't think they knew who gossip girl was going to be. It's like they just randomly picked Dans character because they were running out of time to end the show .There is only one character that is perfect to be gossip girl and that's Eric. If you go back and look at the episodes you'll see that his character is perfect for the job . The gossip girl blast always worked in his favor.
I think it should have been Jenny. She hated them yet wanted to be one of them, and she was never really close to any of the Manhattan's elite (except for Nate, but G.G never wrote anything over the top about him) so she wouldn't have cared about hurting their feelings (except for her brother). They should have gone with Jenny.
yeah but Jenny left after season 4. it would've been boring if it was her and they couldn't shoot a scene with her in which it was revealed
1Ezra1Halliwell that’s true in the beginning of the show, but not for the later seasons. eric left and didn’t return in the middle of the show, so there was no way he could’ve been gossip girl. he wouldn’t have been able to keep up w everything when he’s off at college or vacation or whatever

Why on earth/HOW on earth would Gossip Girl have known that Dan Humphrey - a "nobody" was in love with Serena...that was not news/a story until he at least dated her - yet "lonely boy" is in the very first post!! And Gossip Girl was too dry, sardonic and sophisticated to be written by anyone else! It makes sense that it was a writer. And literally the whole THEME of Gossip Girl was that there is always someone on the outside trying to get in. When Dan wrote his novel, Vanessa commented on the fact that it was Dan, even more than Jenny, who wanted to get into that crowd... The clues were there all along.
I just wished the producers could have told him he was GG without any other cast knowing right in the beginning, would have made the whole show connected more without the acting of shocked when Dan saw GG posts.

Everyone hates on dan being gossip girl but I truly love it. He wasn’t evil or a villain. He was on the outside trying to get in. He was being a writer showing people how money and wealth can affect people and the plastic of people. And then he even admits he fell into the trap of the upper east side but in the end identifies with himself and himself only. He’s a remarkable character idc.

I think the ending was not well thought out. i feel like when they started the show, they didn't have someone to be gossip girl yet so they quickly picked a popular character as to not disappoint the fans by picking a random person.

yeah because GG wasnt a thing then (people sent him gossip, thats how GG worked) when the the thing went down in the hotel before serena left for boarding school so even dan was taken back when serena did tell him.
but even when he was alone? therewere seveal moments when he was on his own and acted surprised on gg blasts. No norma person does act like that. When I watch ll seasons again I realised that this was not plausible.

For the ones that dont like Dan being gg...in season 5 when the gg account gets hacked by Georgina, theres an episode where Georgina shows Phillip how to send a blast, they could actually time the blast to the right time, even Serena uses this. That's why we wouldn't see Dan writting the blast bc he would time it and would act surprised. And Jenny helped too so that's why he was surprised on some blasts as well

I thought of Dan at the start of the show because of his obsession with Serena but many scenes never made sense.It was a decision writers should have thought at the start not at the end.Georgina made perfect sense or maybe Eric or even Lily who did all this to teach Serena a lesson.But Dan never made sense

lame ending that felt so rushed and contrived..so many loose ends left unattended . what happened to Lily and Rufus' boy? so Lily never found out she was played by both William and Ivy? Who the fuck is Chuck's mother, what did Bart gain from not letting his child know about his mother? I can't wrap my head around who ended up with whom--was Lily with William, who was that lady sitting with Rufus(so confusing, Lily kissed Rufus on lips) ? In the last two seasons, it felt like the writers had nothing for Nate, all his scenes were just fillers(since it is not GoT to kill off characters they just left him hang around and hump cougars) and in the finale they actually left Dan hanging. He is the Golden Boy he deserves the Golden girl--Serena, their wedding sex scandal kicked off the show, them getting together would have been the end game.
You must of not had pay attention. Chuck's mother is the woman who teamed up with Jack . Lilly obviously found out about Ivy because it was in the news . Rufus and Lilly didn't kiss on the lips they kissed on the .
I think you don't understand my comment. I know Chuck's mother schemed with Jack Bass , but jack came around in later seasons he supported chuck in taking down Bart. But his mother never came around after all they invested a whole season in her. I know Lily found out about Ivy (did you even read my comment?) but William was the one pulling the strings all along playing Lily. Lily never found out that. God, even a 12 year old could have come up with a better ending for a show that was huge phenomenal success and had cultural impact.

It makes sense though. Even without him knowing it, if you watch the episodes again you can assume that Dan is GG. I mean come on in the pilot when GG says who am I that's a secret I'll never tell xoxo GG, they show Dan in front of a laptop. I think the ending was brilliant and if he didn't act surprised people would know that he's GG and that would ruin all the fun. It's like in PLL if you watch it, no one really knows who's A and they can't give it away by telling the actors oh you know it's you so act like you know it.

I respectfully disagree with this. My wife and I began watching GG three months ago. We learned the identity of GG entirely by accident, while we were early in season two. There are so many instances of Dan being within a crowd of people, without a cellphone or laptop at his disposal, when news from GG hits. There is simply no way, if you watch seasons 1 and 2 again, that he could be that person. A much more likely candidate would have been Chuck, based on what we've seen so far.
Fair comment, but my broader point remains. Whether Chuck is or isn't a valid alternative, Dan as GG simply makes no sense.

For me, it was season four when Dan released his novel "Inside". The way Dan Humphrey described his character, Dylan Hunter, is the exact same way Gossip Girl described him. For those of you who don't know, Dylan Hunter is a caricature of Dan Humphrey.

I didn't want them to reveal GG's identity BUT if they had to choose a character, then Dan would have made so much sense. Honestly, watching Gossip Girl and knowing that it was Dan all along is like a watching a different show, but the dots connected for the most part.
Flashback to the pilot episode when the first blast is being read out in the intro bit and it zooms into Dan ON HIS COMPUTER. I think the producers had him set as gossip girl from the start.
He just said in the interview they didn't. They just picked later on because of those things like that

I read an interview yesterday where Stephanie (creator) said this. They had to change something in the pilot so people would not assume right away it was Dan, and come on, I never imagined it was Dan, just finished watching GG last night.

I don't know... I think that it does make sense and, Jenny wanted him to post those things about her, and all Dan was receive tips. I mean, if people know that they sent a tip into gossip Girl that was about someone Dan cared about and it didn't get released, people would know. I think that it was smart and I was absolutely routing for it - the guy who everyone thought was an outsider from the start was inside the entire time! 😀
What doesn't make sense to me is the fact that when Dan was dating Blair, and gossip girl got its site back, it started posting Blair's private diary and the things she said about loving Chuck. When that blast came out, there was the scene where Dan gets his phone out and when he reads the blast, he is obviously surprised

I thought it was Georgina. If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. And if your going to say that she didn't show up a lot, then yes you are correct. But that's the mystery of it. When the character does not show up that often it adds thoughts to the viewer about him/her. And Georgina was the reason Serena went to boarding school in the first place. So I thought that when Serena got back Georgina would want to start a website called gossip girl for revenge. And she was never there when gossip girl posted so it makes so much sense. When she was in the limo with Chuck all the way out of town she's the only person who knew about and posted it to destroy Chuck and Blair relationship. She never said anything about the drug incident to destroy Serena because she was in it as well. And didn't want to take her chances because her name was under the hotel

it made sense but at the same time they should have made it more convincing by throwing in minor details in each season that imply it more. I mean they did it with the scene in the pilot episode of him checking gg, plus he wrote a book about them all which was basically gg but in published writing. Even when he wasn't with Serena he would always somehow find his way back into their circle, like dude u don't like them so why do u manage to pop back in. You guys he's always wanted Serena but he wanted even just as much and his hs crush on serena was the catalyst

I'm sorry but I can't b the only that wasn't at all surprised by this. To me it all leads back to the first episode, I remember Jenny talking to Dan about that site saying he was always on, I mean cmon. The foreshadowing was pretty clear to me. It was one of the first things she said to him. & it would honestly only make sense for him to b GG. I do understand what the actor playing Dane, Penn, would say that Dane would have to have some sort of disorder.
However, I thought the ending was perfect. It has to all start and end with GG. Just look at the title, right?

It's not wrong to love both Penn and Ed,or even both of their characters from GG,I know I am,they were actually my favourites,together with Blair,no matter they were complete opposites,cause they played their characters so well,especially Ed,even if the show made his character like some kind of abuser of women and at the end they made Penn's characters a freaking sociopath,there is no single character on the show that writers didn't destoyed,at my opinion!Writing was pretty poor!

I felt Dan is the perfect GG, If you observe it from the beginning. Only those secrets aware to him are blasted away while those secrets he didn’t know such as Georgina was acting like someone else or when she manipulated him to believe that Dan is the father of her child never blasted on GG. Certainly most of the news were around Serena shows his obsession with her. And that time when Dan fell in love with Blair, GG was mostly down and took over by Georgina. Afterall he wrote a mockery on them (his first book). Now you may ask then why he acted surprised at times, that the brilliance of the show , most of the GG blasts where based on the information shared by the audience.
It would’ve been so good if it was Jenny and she wasn’t really in London.

I always felt it would've been better if they had left it like the ending of season 2,when "everyone was gossip girl" cause it made total sense.Everyone has something against someone at some point so yeah,I don't really know why they brought it back and had to make gossip girl A SINGLE PERSON at the end,it just made no sense but whatever
yea it make sense that he's the gossip girl among the main characters.. but as what he said, scenes where dan is shocked by gg blast when he's alone are not necessary.. they shouldve shown just the confrontation scenes.. i think the viewers wont notice that.. maybe even the writers have just decided later on that dan is gg..
I honestly don’t think they should’ve revealed who gossip girl even was. None of the characters would make sense at that point, so the only good explanation was some random stalker and that would’ve been boring. Not revealing gossip girl would’ve left the audience thinking and conspiring, and it leaves it mysterious like the writers did it intentionally when in reality they have no idea who gg is either.
He has the perfect facial structure and voice for Dick Grayson (Nightwing) if the character was included in Batman vs. Superman. I would pick Penn Badgley as Nightwing. He could fit the role easily and have excellent Chemistry with Ben Affleck (Batman) in action and in dialogue. However, if Penn was selected to play the role of Dick Grayson. He would need to bulk up a little bit on his upperbody, legs, and arms. Acting wise, he's okay. And he's still learning. Great for him. I really hope he gets the role.

the moment I learned in s1 that Dan's a writer I already had suspicions he was GG. There were also tiny clues here and there. I think I'm fine with it, except Dan's character suddenly got darker and potentially hateful since I'm still on s2.

Out of the 6 major characters i think only 3 of them could have been Gossip Girl.
1.Dan(Ofc he had nothing too loose and the most to gain from Gossip Girl)
2.Nate(Due to wanting a different life then he`s parents and if Dan wasn`t Gossip Girl i think Nate would have ended up as Gossip Girl)
3.Blair(Due to wanting to get out of Serana`s shadow although that is the least valid reason)
I doubt Penn watched the episodes himself, so I can't help but think that he feels sorry for Jacob for having to sit through it! And what a horrible showrunner Savage is. It's not like anyone was going to make sense, but once she'd made her flop decision, she could've just told him. Penn could've at least played Dan a bit less surprised when reading a blast... alone. Anyway, I'm glad he's done with it, and free to do quality things. Great interview :)

I SEARCHED UP WHO WAS GOSSIP GIRL BECAUSE TBE VOICE KINDA SOUNDED DIFFERENT TO ME IN SEASON 4 BUT I WAS EXCEPTING THE GIRL WHO VOICED IT OVER I JUST GOT IT SPOILED OMG SJSOWJJE82WWJDJS
they shouldn’t have even discussed who gossip girl was and why. the reveal was so anti climatic. they should have had it end with whoever it was making a post, closing their laptop and walking out of the frame for us to see their face. Dan would have been plausible if they’d given it a realistic reaction and more detailed explanation. they could have assessed the plot holes and tied them together before him just deciding to tell serena out of nowhere. in reality serena would have acted out and nate would cancel the friendship if you didn’t hold the door open for him let alone all that. they could have at least given us 10 more episodes and a dramatic reveal. them sitting in a room buddy buddy just isn’t cutting it for anybody.
finally someone who thinks like me.. i expected the reveal to be sm more dramatic. i love your idea!! mine was that whoever gossip girl is gets caught typing "xoxo, gossip girl" on their phone (preferably caught by serena and blair), then the 2 girls would report back to everyone in the group and gossip girl would have to come clean and reveal her identity online as well. this was just boring.
One more thing is that in s 5 Blair takes fans phone so he can't see gg but he is gg!
Dan being Gossip Girl was a surprising twist, but it made sense to me because its either "accept me or I'm taking you all down."

Yes, it HAD to be Dan. Gossip Girl's column was all about the wealthy elite. Why on earth/HOW on earth would Gossip Girl have known that Dan Humphrey - a "nobody" was in love with Serena...that was not news/a story until he at least dated her - yet "lonely boy" is in the very first post!! And Gossip Girl was too dry, sardonic and sophisticated to be written by anyone else! It makes sense that it was a writer. And literally the whole THEME of Gossip Girl was that there is always someone on the outside trying to get in. When Dan wrote his novel, Vanessa commented on the fact that it was Dan, even more than Jenny, who wanted to get into that crowd... The clues were there all along.

Dan being Gossip Girl was the obvious choice not the right one. With Gossip girl being a blog pretty much I think it had to be someone who was into writing and with Dan being an author/writer of the core circle. I still stand by that observation but me personally it should've been nate. Gossip girl didn't write about him at all.
