- The January 6 attack on Congress as it met to certify Joe Biden's presidential victory is a day that will live on in infamy, yet for Maryland congressman Jamie Raskin, this was just the next in a sequence of tragic events that changed his life forever. Having lost his son to suicide only days before, and days later leading the ensuing impeachment effort against Trump, Rep. Raskin’s 45-day journey at the start of 2021 is an inspiring epic of strength, tragedy and determination.
In his new memoir, Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy, Raskin recounts that after the tragic loss of his son Tommy, it was Tommy’s values and vision for the country that provided him inspiration to not only weather the challenges of January 6 but to lead the ensuing impeachment trial of Donald Trump for inciting insurrection. Facing division and the tremors of a nation rocked to its core, Rep. Raskin and his nine-member team were able to lead the most bipartisan impeachment trial ever conducted.
Rep. Raskin has served as an elected official in Maryland since 2007 and represented its 8th Congressional District since 2017. A professor of constitutional law at American University Washington College of Law, chair of the House Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, Raskin has been a leading voice in Congress for executive accountability and electoral integrity.

I am so very sorry that he and his wife lost their brilliant empathetic son to suicide, a tragic loss. Mr. Raskin's role on the Jan. 6 Hearings committee is of inestimable value in a time when we are fractions of seconds away from losing our democracy.
We're really blessed to have a public servant with dear Mr Raskin's heart, intellect and humility. He also doesn't shy away from a fight and has razor sharp arguments when needed.

Raskin is a national treasure and the quality of person the Republicans cannot even understand much less rise to the quality of. Today's Republicans govern by playing to the lowest category of human beings, the lowest instincts of humanity- fear, hate, racism, misogyny, bigotry, the stupidity of denying anything they don't like and the worship of demagogues and grifters. Raskin has a luminous moral center, a quality unknown to Republicans, who don't even know right from wrong.
Why not just say, "deplorables"? A GREAT AMERICAN SCHOLAR
The classical role of government is to tax away economic rents and use it to lower the cost of production. This is done through subsidies for such things as public infrastructure, education, and health care, not raising the cost of living and therefore the cost of labor, as with monopolistic privatization.
The problem with economics as it is understood in America, is that there is no distinction between wealth production and wealth extraction. Production of goods and services speaks for itself, but monopolies and the banks (FIRE, finance, insurance, and real estate) extract what is called economic rent. In the US, economic rent is counted as an addition to GDP, when in fact it is an extraction from GDP. The free market Adam Smith talked about is free FROM economic rent, not free FOR economic rent.
This is Industrial Capitalism (China) as opposed to Financial Capitalism (USA), and it is what the conflict is really all about.
American democracy is entirely theatrical with the majority having no more effect on the rentier oligarchy than the Chinese majority on the Communist Party of China.
If the US was a democracy, we would have a decent minimum wage, public health care, free education, parental leave, and gun control, to name a few, all by the expressed will of the majority.
By definition, an oligarchy is a form of government in which power is held by a small number of people. Republics are a type of democracy in which the people elect representatives to create and vote on legislation, rather than voting on that legislation themselves.
We have institutionalized opposition at best, not representation at all.

It's interesting that Rep. Raskin sits on the edge of his seat the entire time. That's what we've all been doing for the last 5 years. Sitting anticipatorily on the edges of our seats, and in the last few years, waiting for something to be done about the damage Trump and his sycophants have done. As a citizen lay person, I could have done a better job than the interviewer Marisa Lagos. She is a prime example of the California Valley-Speak person (every fourth word is "like"). She is obviously incapable in that role.
