  • In this video, we're going to talk about the right gear for practice - specifically, tips for kitesurfing success.
Kitesurfing is a great sport for people of all levels of experience, and the right gear can make all the difference. In this video, we'll discuss the different pieces of equipment you need to kitesurfing successfully, and give you tips on how to choose the perfect gear for your level of experience. Be sure to watch this video to get started in the right direction for your kitesurfing career!
Do you have the right kiteboarding equipment to practice?
One of the significant problems that can result in emergencies and cause accidents is equipment failure.
The kite's bladders lose air; lines can snap, chicken loops that snap or slip off or accidentally release harnesses that break, all these can turn your session into a nightmare, especially if the wind is strong.
Many kitesurfing beginners think they should get crappy equipment to learn because it will get abused a lot - kites will crash, lines will get tangled and caught on things, etc.
However, unreliable equipment can add many hazards to a learner's experience - that's why most kitesurf schools try to renew their gear every year.
Also, if the equipment is crappy, it will not last long as it will be very abused initially, but worse than that, it will not help you progress, making your improvements harder.
If you're learning on your own, using a kite, kite lines, and harness, which are in decent shape, will help reduce the risk of injury to you and others.
So before getting a kite, learn how to find out if it's the right one. I'll make a video to help you out on this quest, and you will be able to find the link on the description below once it's done.
    The trainer kite
Can you get hold of a trainer kite to learn how to fly it?
If you are going to learn by yourself, consider starting with a trainer kite. These kites are much smaller and produce a lot less pull making it a lot less risky to discover how to control them. A trainer kite can still drag you in the sand, but since it's not attached to you, it's easier to let it go. These trainer kites are usually piloted using just your hands, so when you let them go, they enter into safe mode, stopping.
You can start with a small foil kite with 2 or 3 lines to learn the basics. I would recommend a 3 line kite, and a new good one will cost around 200€. A cheaper version can cost around 50€, but it might not last your trial and error phase as you will probably crash it a few times.
After finding the right kite for you, find yourself a place with enough space to fly it without people around you and no wind obstacles. An empty beach would be my suggestion. Start on a day with light winds that allow the kite to fly correctly but doesn't pull you much. Fly a kite a bit to get the basic piloting dialed in and try to park the kite at the edge of the window and walk with it parked, simulating the kite position when riding. These exercises will give you better control when you go to the water.
Explore the wind window and get a feeling where the kite pulls and doesn't.
If you don't know what equipment to get and are looking online for bargains, i recommend investing in a kite course instead. First, you can learn if you like the sport before committing to it, and also it's much cheaper to support 300 to 400€ in learning this sport than spending 1500 to 2000 in gear to destroy it in the first attempts because you don't know how to use it. What a great initiative from the Portuguese. Cannot love this enough...The only online search encouraging you to trust yourself to learn and progress into the sport. Maybe one of the few sports in the world where paramount safety cannot be overlooked before you step in the water. Thank you for your input

The video actually encourages you to have lessons and alerts you to the dangers of not doing so. But in case you do how to proceed to mitigate it the most.

My friend had the worst gear. Crappy Eclipse kite he had to pump up every 10min and his bar was awful and old but he achieved learning to kiteboard

When i started, the kites were even harder to learn, and i managed. It is possible to learn with any kite. It is just more challenging and can be more painful. Pumping every 10 minutes is very painful!

It seems fairly common that people try to save money and buy a used kite they know nothing about. I was concerned that I would destroy my new kite in the learning process, but so far, with all the crashes on water or sand, it is still in good shape!

If it was already used and abused, breaking it in the learning process is actually higher. Not to mention that usually older kites perform worse and do not help you improve. It just makes your learning progress harder. In the schools you get advice from the instructors, so you make a good purchase.

I bought a 8 and 10 m ozone catalyst used and 9 years old to learn. One bar is ok one is too old and I don't trust.. think the lines could snap. So far I am improving and I am at starting and going both ways but no transition yet. However I have only done for 10 days. Board was also cheap and bit rusty. I manage to stay under 700euro for all. After seeing another video about board handle I am thinking to unscrew it from mine.

Those catalyst are old. You can learn on them but for sure it will not make it faster. Boards are ok if they are cheap as they usually last for a long time and there is no crazy improvement on them. Use the board as it is just don’t touch the handle. Once you realize you don’t need it take it off.

If you cant kitesurf with a trainer it's not a trainer. Honestly . Your so dramatic and always negative it's like kitesurf is always almost going to kill you. You really need to change that attitude.. it's so wrong. You scare me!! I'm afraid to fly a kite now !! It's going to hurt me or cost me thousands. Also why is it always fly a kite at the beach ?
Parks are much better to learn in
