- 7 solid reasons to consider buying a Porsche Cayman or Boxster 987 in 2020. The 987 was produced from 2005 to 2012 and was a hugely popular mid engine sports car made by Porsche. The Cayman/Boxster is an incredible car for the price, and this could be potentially the best used sports car to buy in 2020.
We'll look at things like the performance and BHP, prices as of 2020, maintenance, servicing, community, lack of technology, the looks of the car and how it makes you feel.

Bought my first Porsche, a 2006 Boxster in Dec 2019---right before the pandemic shutdown!
With a driving group that I met through a friend, using appropriate social distancing, my better half and i spent a summer discovering Northern Ontario with the top down.
Absolutely glorious----felt free and saved our sanity. Now I'm looking for an S, but I will forever be grateful to this beauty.
Reason #2 is the best reason for me. It's pure therapy every time I drive it!
Mental health
Absolutely!!
Pure joy in my box top down!!
My 09 Boxster S was one of my best cars. I wish I could have her back however when I sold mine it had near 200,000 km on the dial. She is missed. I'm now ordering a 2020 Spyder as a used Boxster S is nowhere to be found at a reasonable price. Keep up the great videos. Cheers from Canada.
I have to say I've had my 987 Boxster for almost 9 years and I still feel like I did when I first bought the thing. I absolutely love the car, it's not the quickest car I've had in fact it's one of the slower cars bearing in mind I've owned a 55 AMG and M3 along with other performance cars although it's the most engaging and is extremely fun to drive roof down and at pace through windy roads. It's been reliable and is kept in tip top condition and always gets compliments . Love my little Porka 👍
Just got my Boxster S 986 last week love it and the feeling I get just driving it is awesome
Love this video! You verified many of the reasons I purchased my 07 Cayman S. I especially love the comments about the car as “therapy”. When I drive my car I refer to it as PDT or Porsche Driving Therapy. Bottom line is they are great cars and miles of smiles. Keep up the great videos.
Great video, thank you for your perspective. I've owned a 986 for over 10 years now and loved every moment.
Love the vid, thanks. Like you I think the Gen 1 Cayman is fantastic. Mine brings a smile every time and I too find it great therapy. A future porsche classic in the making.
Could not agree more with number 2. Taking my cayman out for a spin always puts a smile on my face and can cheer me up after a crap day. Any excuse to go for a drive!
Haha. I really liked #2. You spoke from your heart. It came through. And you really game across as caring for your fellow man. Sweet
The main one for me on my 986 is I really want to get out in it, the drug analogy is bang on, personally while I enjoy the torque the 4K to 7k rev range is the addictive bit.
Just bought a 2005 Boxster 987 Base and fully geeking out. Your channel is a fantastic discovery. Thanks for such an awesome resource.
Hi Satch, always enjoy watching your video’s. I have a 2006 Boxster S and you are smack on with your comments. I am Canadian and cant wait for the winter weather to be over and get the Boxster back on the road again and continue my “therapy”. The sound of the flat 6, singing away just from a foot behind is the best music ever!
Keep up the videos
You're the man Satch!
Really enjoy your work. 45 degrees, but sunny today in Atlanta. Dropped the top on my Guards Red 2004 Boxster S this morning, and ran some back roads. That thing is solid, strong and sharp! 27k miles and tight as a crab's ass. What a blast!!! Really howls after 5000rpm's. Great machine.
Great vid, Satch keep me coming. Just bought an 02 Boxster and lovin it.
Thanks Barry. Great stuff, did you go for the S model or 2.5 or 2.7? Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
I purchased a 986 Boxster S yesterday. I was able to inspect and negotiate a sizable discount because of lack of service history. I’m now the proud owner due mainly to your channel. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from you and a big thanks!!! By the way in in it for under $7K
Brilliant to hear Mike. How are you enjoying the car, it's probably a silly question, of course you must be loving it. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Congrats and welcome!
One of your best yet Satch ! Cheers, Robert :-)
I've just bought a brand new 718 base 2020 model, as have followed your videos and hope I get as much joy out of mine as you do yours.
Once again great video, all Great points. keep them coming.
Yes it makes perfect sense. Watched your whole video - your passion for Porsche shines through, well done!
Thank you for another fantastic video Satch :)
Thanks for going to the effort of creating these great and helpful videos; picked up my 1st ever Porsche today after spending WAY too long researching it; your videos were very beneficial. Got a AA1 condition Gen 2 2.9PDK with a mere 38K.
Another excellent feature , Satch, thanks. Love the colour of your Cayman , looking the business with those gorgeous alloys 👍👍
Second reason is sooooo true. Cheers from Malaysia, I love my 987.2 base PDK!
I've got a 2006 Porshe Cayman Base, absolutely love it and always turns heads while driving it,
I love the fact that you do these videos here in the u.s there are little to no info on them and not that many driving around I just recently bought a 2011 boxster s and love it couldn't find a cayman without a million miles on it that's why I went with the box
Just picked up a 2012 Boxster S. Loving it.
nice! Im currently in the market for a 2012 Boxster S as well...gotta have my white with tan interior
@@thedudeandstuff169 it's a blast, I went meteor gray with tan interior
Loving your videos my friend! Edit: I certainly agree with you on Porsche Therapy!
Thanks Lucas. Who needs a $100 an hour therapist when you can have a $15k car LOL. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Great vid Satch totally agree older technology is addictive and my base 2.5 boxster only has 200 ish bhp so plenty of family cars quicker but once the flat 6 is singing it's excellent noise
Plus you were getting some great sound from the cayman being picked up on the camera's
Thanks Lee. Exactly, you get the most out of the lower engine cars, like a GT3 is great and all, but can't get the most out of it without losing licence or ending up in a hedge. Maybe i'm just saying that because i don't have one, but we've got to be happy with what we have right.
Late to the party. Liked/subbed.
Excellent run down. Also, thanks for the info on the scanner. I was looking to get one
Happy New Year! Thnx! CJ
Nice video Satch. I would swap reasons #1 & #2. The freedom you feel driving it and forgetting anything else is the top. Especially with the top down on the boxster 🙂
I hope you continue to keep the channel going and make more videos buddy. Just ignore the trolls and don't give them the satisfaction of a reaction!
Nice production! After tracking and modifying two 986s, I'm on the lookout for a 987S!
Love your vids Satch... keep it up buddy
Had my 987.2 for a week now and I'm hooked.it certainly gives you a buzz ,total enjoyment.
Hi Satch,
Thanks for another good video with loads of useful advice.
I currently own a Boxter S gen 1 face-lift year 2003. Love the car. However I'm looking for my next purchase. Please can you offer some advice on driving and performance characteristics between Boxter/camen 987 S gen 2 with 3.4 engine and 911 996 carrera 2 with 3.6 engine.
Many thanks
Couldn't agree more with everything you said. Car therapy is fantastic!! Well done!
Thanks Thomas. It really really works, maybe the NHS should start doing this LOL. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
@@alsatch_ The therepy point is probably the most powerful thing you've put in a video. It's true, and it's not called out enough. Thanks for the great content, Satch!
Thank you from a Canadian viewer.
Great content as always. Total agreement on the drug effect and the attractiveness of the "lack of electronic gizmos". My C2S is of the same era and I could not love it more!
Thanks Craig. Just you and the car, nothing else to interrupt us. Great feeling. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Enjoy your videos 👍. I bought a 987 Boxster 2.7 last September for £5500. 120k full Porsche history in artic silver I love it. I have already covered 4000 miles and only had to change tyres and brakes and an oil change, I already new this when I bought it oil change was out of preference.
I love the car, Everyone loves the car. Full SS Spots exhaust and on 19” Carrera s wheels it’s sounds great and is so well planted I enjoy every drive. I do sometimes think about the 3.4 but on a 100 mile journey in mine I can get 42mpg incredible! Considering the performance on offer when you open the taps (hard not to). average is around 23mpg I drive it every day and it will be another Porsche next for me too.
Cracking vid Satch! On a boxster /cayman back catalogue odyssey at the mo.
Keep em coming!
I've been waiting for this
Thanks pal, you have really helped me understand why I own my Porsche, it’s the best pheropy in th world just need the weather
2006 boxster s, 24 7 12 year round convertible views, even the rain is warm, + rainbows! If you could drive to Hawaii it's the perfect place. Love it, aloha.
i didn't now much about Porsche cars, i did by a sport edition Boxster and drive it til south of Spain and buck to Scotland, what a beautiful moments driving this car 987,2.7 sport edition
by now after a few months i near now all about the car,
i have drive on the past like mustang 5.0 and alpha romeo jolieta 3.0 convertible cars BM, VW,CORSA,RENAULT MEGANE, MG,TRIUMPH,MORGAN,MAZDA,
from all models that i have drive on paste i will not even consider to put them close together,Porsche for me by the experience that i have in comparison to other models that i drive is a pleasure to say Porsche boxster is the best car by far,..
thank you very much keep posting good staff that is what we want to now,..
Nice to hear, sounds like a great trip, but that's what these cars are made for, enjoying the drive and not just simply getting from A to B. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
#2 is my favorite reason and it applies to any Porsche
Love mine, owned lots of other manufacturers sports cars but they don’t really compare. Got a white 2008 Cayman S with black wheels and it’s just fun, have to get out in it every day.
This vid swung it for me ... been thinking about a Porsche for ages, a retirement toy ... so yep did my homework and looked at Gen1 first, some nice cars but none with IMS upgrade done. So in the end I bit the bullet, shelled out a little more cash and bought a Gen2 Boxster in Guards Red, low miles, one owner and immaculate. A real head turner, and what a sweet song higher in the rev range.
Another great vid mate. I live down-under in Australia 🇦🇺. Surfing 🏄♂️ gives you the same buzz as diving the 987 (reason #2)
Awesome cant wait to get out in one
I have a 2012 boxter S ,bought her from new. I thought I was the only person who felt like this, but I’m obviously not......I feel totally reassured that I’m sane....thank you ,and have a happy life.....😬
Hi it’s peter from Liverpool. I was lucky enough to have a cayman r for the weekend on my 40th birthday. I proper understand no2!!! I swear to god your bang on. I’m 47 now and I will definitely get a cayman next car
Couldn't agree more with this article. I have a Nov 2005 (so very early) manual Cayman S with 53000 miles on the clock (and rising at 1000 miles a month). I love it, I like that its analogue not digital but feels so well made. I have always driven with the radio on in a car but now more and more drive with it off do the sheer sensory experience. Best car I have ever owned.
John Wh hahahaha, I do the same, stereo off - listening to the engine sing and the PSE when the car is warmed up. Love it when that right foot plays my tune!!
And videos just never do the real experience of the engine and exhaust note the justice they deserve or what you really hear when you’re pushing on through traffic
Great comments !! Great vid honest and realistic
Please, where can I find this front LED "fog" lights (DRL)? Thank you!
Great #2 reason ! + Nice airborne views and music 👍🏻
Another great video and lots advice out of your video
Another brilliant presentation. We'll done. I think it's only a matter of time before a major TV network snaps you up. You deliver what the viewers really want. No airs or graces and yet very professional.
Thanks Niall, not so sure about the TV thing mind but i do appreciate the feedback, I just love doing this for fun so long may it continue :-)Thanks for watching,
If I ever happen to be able to afford a Porsche, I'm calling Satch first!!!
Nice production value. Want a Porsche more than ever now.
Thought about upgrading my 987 to a 981, but I'd miss the feel the hydraulic steering gives too much. They switched to an electric rack in the 981 and a lot of road feel was lost. IMO the extra refinement of the 981 may make it a better daily, but the 987 is the better weekend car.
I finally drove a 2014 with the first gen electric steering and actually thought it was great. Although I've only had one very short go in a 987.
Pp
I had a 05 987 BS for 15 years, 140,000 miles. My 981 Spyder is “A better car, but a worse Porsche”. The 987 was like a go kart with mods, lightweight flywheel, short shifter, Bilsteins, Milltek exhaust, ECU tune, underdrive pulley.
Underdrive pulley is the quickest way to destroy most engines!
Great video .can't wait to become a fully blown addict ..
Great vid
congratulations for the video, may I know where you found the grilles with the LEDs for the front bumper? thank you
Great vid Satch - how do you find the Cayman compares with your 997? Reason I ask - I’m considering whether to get a 911 in 2020; likely a 997 2S or 4S
What front splitter is that in the thumbnail?
Caymans run in the 20k range here for a sorted car in Arizona. I was torn between the Cayman and the Boxster when I bought my 2003 Boxster.
Either way you have a smile on your face though right? Thanks again for watching mate :-)
Subbed👍 Really looking to get a Cayman, but the prices here in Norway are ridiculously high sadly.
does anyone know if a ECU tune would gain much? Would it be worth doing it etc..? I know its difficult when you don't have a turbo to see much in the way of gains. I saw a plugin module claiming 39bhp making a gen 1 about as fast a gen 2. Thoughts?
What drone do you use for your footage?
In Sweden the 987 cayman gen 1 cost approx 20k £ , gen 2 cost 30k £.
Boxster 987 gen 1 start approx 18k £ and gen 2 cost about 28k £.
It is really ridicoulous.
Would anyone the IMS on a 2006 Porshe Cayman Base?
How do you modify the chassis? Just got a 2005 Boxster S
Love my gen 1 Cayman S - purely a social car but one I enjoy everytime I get in 😎
I'm totally the same ! Been saying g the same for years it's my total escape and defo therapy! Very addictive takes me back to being a kid woth toy cars the noise of these just behind you us just mad!
I am viewing a 2010 3.4S Boxster in a couple of days which, if I buy it, will be my fourth Boxster
Have you had an IMS Bearing issue with your car?
So between the 996tt and the 987 which should I get?
I think about changing the 996 for a Cayman all the time. Such a lovely small Porsche
Hard decision. Both great cars, and only you can decide - I also wouldn't like to choose between the two cars. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Reasons # 2 and 4 are my top!
For the torque fun do i need 300 hp?
Do they have snap oversteer?
Nice drone footages!! Great!!
Thanks Roland. Just bought a new drone (mavic pro 2) so looking forward to using that soon. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Hi sache, have you drawn the winner for the boxter giveaway not sure if you reached a million followers yet x
Really enjoyed this video as the Cayman/Boxster is what my sights are set on, once I pay off my Macan GTS.
Great to hear Joe, you will love these little cars i promise you. The Macan GTS must be a tasty car also, drove the Macan Turbo and it was brilliant. Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like.

i agree
Looking at a 05 987 boxster s. Has 121k miles and a pretty nice spec. It's on the cheaper side of 16k usd. Is that a decent deal for that much miles?
Great video Satch. Keep her between the hedges. Mick 👍🍻
Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching,
Miss my 981 boxster . Regret selling it 😪 but I had issues with my hips with lack of support under the thighs.. (basic 2 way seats)on the longer drives.. but what a car (and the IPD Plenum made one hell of a difference to the 2 7 base)
Excellent!
you references prices around the 12-18k price tag. whats your take on some of the prices for these cars nowadays? seems like i can't find one for under 30k USD.
Top man keep it up I'm N.East m8 love it..
Another great video :-)
Thanks Simon appreciate it :-) Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Hi Satch, came across your channel while researching 986’s watched your 986 reason to buy and also this one. Given they are both from the mechanical era which would you say is the best option? 986 (2003/2004) 987, 987.2 and both Boxster and Cayman? Thanks.
Im going to buy one
Your number 2 reason is fine. I drove a 987 owned by a friend for some months and miss it.
considering buying this car 2005 porsche boxster, it costs $5k but it has 168k miles and a check engine light. What do you think, am I getting a good deal because porsches are reliable or is this a money pit? Thanks man.
Hey Watch. Did you ever reinstall the IPD plenum? I may have missed it if you did.
Not yet, and to be honest i don't think i will.
Hi Satch another great video. Is the Caymen more torquier than your 997? I have read recently that the 997 needs to be revved hard to get at the power. Really want a 997 but do not want to rev the nuts off it to go quickly.
Thanks Peter, the 911 feels torquier (sp?), but the fun factor is exactly the same. Once you put your fun down in these though, and hear the exhaust sound you will soon be addicted, and if it revs a little higher then its not so bad. My advice is to drive them both (if you haven't already) Thanks for watching, I'm posting daily content on the Facebook page if you haven't already given it a follow/like. facebook.com/porschenetworks/
Check out the Porsche rev range, they enjoy a good thrash. Once your properly warmed up (keep it under 3k unti you are) you'll be happily changing gear at 7k+ and you'll be legally maxed at 70 in second gear if you really want to move.
