    You make excellent videos, Captain Lang. Thanks for sharing!! If you do a follow-up to this video, maybe you would consider including the solar panels on the stern of your beautiful boat. Like to see the physical attachments and how you have it all hooked up from stern to cabin. I just launched my first boat; early 70's Hughes 25. I am going to have to incorporate solar panels/energy on-board so any help would be much appreciated. Great video, and thanks again!! p.s. your videos on trim for speed/sailing were very, very informative and helpful as well.

    Hi, you have some good ideas, do you have a video on your ham setup? I am currently completing a B&B designed cat ketch, a Mathew Flinders 246 and I have an Icom 602 VHF and an Icom 802/AT 140 with a KISS/SSB ground plane. Because it’s a cat ketch there is no backstay and I am pondering the antenna system. Any suggestions would be great!

    • @CaptainLang

      No I don't have a video just on ham radio setup. If you watched my boat tour carefully you noticed I am using a car wip antenna which works extremely well.

    I'm in the market to buy a boat, and I wanted to use the V-Bert as a saloon too (and office)! It's the first time I see it done somewhere else!
    Just a question: Does the lack of a bulk-head in the forward part of the boat have a significant effect? I was thinking of replacing it for a 3cm thick plastic glass.
    I'm subscribing just based on this, so I can see this v-berth again and again.

    • @CaptainLang
      @CaptainLang  4 года назад

      My boat was designed the way you see it. It was one of the reasons why I purchased this particular boat! If you do any major modification like removing a forward cabin bulkhead you should consult a navel architect so you don't end up in trouble later.

    • @dan711g
      @dan711g 3 года назад

      @@CaptainLang thank you for replying! I figure with Marine being line of sight... if I equip a ham radio with an antenna at the top of the mast and get certified I can have long range capabilities for voice to voice as well as possibly other communication. Am I Dreaming? Or is this a true possibility?

    • @CaptainLang
      @CaptainLang  3 года назад +1

      Most ham radios will not transmit on the marine VHF band without removing a security resistor inside the radio. Because the marine VHF band is channelized it is not a good idea to use a ham radio to broadcast because it can be tuned in-between the channels and you can not be absolutely certain you are on the exact frequency. Use a real marine radio...They are cheap...for VHF marine and your ham radio for longer than line of sight communication.

      Okay, so two separate radios... That makes sense. How is the ham functionality while at Sea with the antenna Atop The mast.... I would think it would be the best form of communication? I guess, as long as you had somebody to reach / receive on the other end?

    • @CaptainLang
      @CaptainLang  4 года назад

      I don't need an antenna tuner as each band 10/20/40 has its own extension which makes the system very efficient. Being on the water it acts a great ground plane. I've made contacts around the world...But still dream of up grading my radio as the new ones have better digital noise filters.

    • @SkylaneCaptain

      Captain Lang Sailing Tutorials thank you for the super quick response :) You can’t go down wind in light air even with a downwind sail ?

    • @CaptainLang
      @CaptainLang  4 года назад

      If you have only 3 or 4 knots of wind your not going down wind no matter the amount of sail. The most your going to get is half the wind speed. If you sail on a broad reach and jib back and forth you can do better but you add so much distance it ends up the same.

    How does the hustler mobile antenna work on the boat?

    • @CaptainLang

      I think it works better than a backstay antenna. I have no antenna tuner! I have worked stations from the south of France to Japan to Australia. I have three bands 10, 20, and 40 Meters. I did have to put dyneema stays to hold the antenna in place. The ground plane of the water makes it work very well.

    • @CaptainLang
      @CaptainLang  6 лет назад +1

      I have a PSS dripless seal on the propeller shaft. However, a well maintained stuffing box should drip very slowly and wiping up the drips once a week should keep the bilge dry. It took me 5 years to trace the many little leaks (most were deck/portlight fittings) and fix them. When I clean the through the water sensor by pulling it out which, no matter how fast I am, puts a few gallon of water in the bilge. I will spunge every drop out when I'm done. I don't have to do this very often as the diver does a decent job.
