    This song is so beautiful; it shows how the Phantom sees music as his escape from the life he lives, where people fear him and he's forced to live under an opera house.

    I don’t care what anyone says, Gerard Butler freaking killed it. His voice is amazing and he’s not even a professional like Emmy or Patrick. Good job, Gerard, you stole my heart with this performance

      He definitely fit the bill for the role of the Phantom, like Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark and Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow

      with a lisp due to his lip, and heavy with accent. absolutely excellent. only thing i dont like is that possessive part. not his doing but it doesnt reflect the origin story.

    This song is literally a trance. It's so memorising and hearing it live is other worldly. It's definitely my favorite song from the musical. I remember Sarah Brightman saying that this was a powerful song and she wanted to perform it and was sad when she found out it's the phantom's ballad but I can't blame her, it's a beautiful, powerful and emotional song. It's amazing to listen to and sing along just ugh amazing

      I compared Butler's performance to Boccelli's. Although Boccelli is a professional opera singer, and has amazing voice, Butlers gives some terror and horror so needed in such tormented creature of darkness. Butler sounds once like an angel and then like a devil. Plus I like his voice, he did excellent job as someone who never received proper training before. Bocceli's performance has beauty but lacks the emotions.

    • @oldfart269
      @oldfart269 8 лет назад +12

      I'm not sure what you would consider a "musical voice," but several things are certain in this recording:
      1. He maintains pitch throughout.
      2. He is able to convey emotion as he sings.
      3. He has excellent diction.
      4. His dynamics are impeccable.
      Sounds like a very capable musical voice to me! :)

    • @the.kathy.sophia
      @the.kathy.sophia 8 лет назад +8

      Doug Schwandt sure. But that's not what I meant. I love his voice and the emotion. But what I mean by "musical" voice is something like ramin karimloo. Both is awesome. And even if gerry doesn't have the kind of voice like ramin he fits perfectly to the role and his voice has everything the phantom should have :)

    Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
    Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
    Silently the senses abandon their defenses
    Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor
    Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
    Turn your face away from the garish light of day
    Turn your face away from cold, unfeeling light
    And listen to the music of the night
    Close you eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
    Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
    Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
    And you'll live as you've never lived before
    Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
    Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
    Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
    In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
    The darkness of the music of the night
    Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world
    Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
    Let your soul take you where you long to go
    Only then can you belong to me
    Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
    Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation
    Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
    To the harmony which dreams alone can write
    The power of the music of the night
    You alone can make my song take flight
    Help me make the music of the night

      If you think about it. Is Christine hadn't sang (the phantom wanted her to sing) raoul would have not noticed her. Cause he didn't notice her when she was a dancer. And all of a sudden she sings once and he falls for her. Isn't sketchy? I mean the phantom loved her for who she was and how beautiful he sounded. He knew her more than raoul knew her.

      The phantom isn't really Evil he is the epitome of a tortured soul. to quote him "it is the hate of man that made me into a monster, and it's your love that will redeem me" he is an angel just twisted into a monster.

    • @BizzarreProductions
      @BizzarreProductions 6 лет назад +2

      The Phantom is "bad" but not exactly "evil." Based on his upbringing, coupled with the fact that mental healthcare for trauma didn't exist during his lifetime, his actions and desperation are more understandable.

    • @cosmictreason2242
      @cosmictreason2242 3 месяца назад

      We are all evil
      The phantom is relatable because he's a product of his environment but also conscious of it, all he really wants is to be loved, and he knows that what he's done is wrong, but is transformed by the mercy of his victim, the kindness of a woman's touch, denying him his own self victimization and making him both face himself and stop being self obsessed at last. He is what every man can be: a traumatized, touch starved boy who becomes a desperate creep, a visionary creator of incredible beauty, and a whole man who relents of wanting the world to bend to him and is able to be content with his lot in life only after being set free from vain selfishness by the love of others. It isn't a Christian allegory and i doubt the author or lyricist were Christian but the themes in the opera are incredibly poignant Christian themes that force us to contemplate ourselves.

      The thing with Phantom is he really can't help his appearance. The old part is just a thing with time, but he was born deformed. The Gerard Butler version is mild in comparison to how the original description was.
      "He has no nose; eyes that are sunken so deep that all is seen are two skull-like eye sockets except when his golden eyes glow in the dark; skin that is yellow and tightly stretched across his bones; and only a few wisps of ink-black hair behind his ears and on his forehead. (His mouth is never described in as much detail, but is referred to as a 'lipless' 'dead mouth' by Christine, and Erik acknowledges that his mouth is abnormal when lifting up his mask to display ventriloquism.) He is described as extremely thin, so much so that he resembles a skeleton."
