- I purchased the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 tent in May 2020 and have slept in it for a total of 15 nights between June and the end of September. It is my ideal tent and in this review I go over all of the specs and features of this brand new 2020 Copper Spur design.

Just picked one of these up for a trip I took last month. Love the tent. It held up through a few different heavy hail storms and kept me dry when I found myself setting in an inch of water.
I wanted to throw this out there for size reference. It is listed as a 2 person tent but personally wouldn't want to share it with anyone. At 6'3" 240lbs, and a wearer of a 2xl shirt the only way I really fit diagonally.

Congrats on your new palace! I have the original CS UL1 and after a couple of misfires with the 2019 Fly Creek and 2019 CS, I upgraded to the 2020 CS UL1. I move my tent around most every time I set up, just to avoid a rock, get level or a better view. Free standing is so worth the extra few ounces and I'm sure you can't believe you suffered so long with your Fly Creek:). The awning is both cool and goofy and a feature I'll probably never use. The amazing thing though is how much easier the two zips makes getting in and out of the tent. Stuffing the fly between the inner and outer is brilliant and exactly how I do it. My tiny new UL1 is awesome, but I am jealous about your palace.
I too move my tent around a lot. In the Sierra I got flooded out by a rain storm and was in a huge puddle and it was so easy to move my tent thank god!! I seriously can’t believe I endured that Flycreek tent for as long as I did.
That door stuffing trick was neat. I'm going to use it.

@@gideonwilde6762 Tent was great. I recommend one of many groundsheets you can find on Amazon, the Thermo film is a bit thin and difficult to work with in wet/windy conditions

Newcomer to your channel! I recently just got this tent and I love it! Your review is detailed and easy to follow along, two thumbs up for sure. Small tip btw, not sure if you already figured it out since this vid, but the doors can actually be stuffed inside into a loop so it doesn't need to be rolled up (for the actual tent, not the awning to the fly). Makes it easy to keep open with 0 work!

@@HikeOregon if you pause at 5:23 of your video, on the inside, there's this red band looking thing on the inside of the tent body. It's made for people to just bundle up the door of the tent and stuff it in there without having to roll up the tent and pin it up properly!

Thanks for the great review. I’ve had the bikepacking version of this tent for a couple years and love it, have been curious about the new one.
Any chance that you can just unzip the center zipper and roll the now loose half vestibule door to the corner and put the roll in the toggle there? This is how the original version stays half open and out of the way (you can even roll both sides of both vestibules open this way... nice way to have a wide open tent but ready to convert quickly for rain) and it looks like the same toggle in the corner right by the guy line. Your double unzip and stuff may be easier (and more open) but it’s another option and would provide better coverage for the vestibule if by chance it does rain. Just a thought... those BA designers are crafty.

I like the options in this tent dual fly, storage pockets and optional awning. Going to update my tent for next season it will either be the Zpacks Duplex or possibly this one thanks for the great review.
Get the Platinum verison.
the Zpacks Duplex is obviously WAY lighter than this tent. :)
Great review of this tent. What's the feature I like the most? Open mesh. I gotta see night sky silhouetted buy tall trees! A lot of the tents I've looked at lack that feature. So it's on my possible purchase list. Awning-style vestibules could be a plus too.
Yes the mesh is so great for those hot summer nights.
I will put this tent in the running, as I'm looking to upgrade. Sleeping with a partner on most trips is showing that my current tent is too small. I have the BA SL Seedhouse 2-person tent: Love it and it has lasted many years, so agree that BA makes great tents. Crazy that this tent has only 1 sqft more floor space (29 vs 28), but looks way roomier! All due to the design of the tent itself. 6oz different in weight. The Seedhouse is super roomy for one, but a tough tight for two. And, like the she says, two people = two doors. I tried to cut back on weight before and only got the one door, but... things change!

I will pause it right here at the rainfly: I just ordered a 2020 1p Copper Spur ($317 from Als Sports) here in 2023...anyway I saw you buckled that fly right on right easy. The Nemo 1p Dragonfly Bikepack (2021 model $305 Moosejaw), here one must lift up the foot of the tent to slip a gromet to the fly over a pole, and it adjusts or tensions on one side only.
I called Nemo & it explained that the gromet was more reliable than a buckle, but boy...you sure made it look easy just buckling those buckles right quick. I imagine after 400 times or in the real cold the buckle might fail, so technically Nemo is correct, though its newer OSMO tents will have a different system.
I look forward to comparing the tents. Thankfully Moosejaw gave me 60 days on the Nemo to decide & Als Sports maybe 30 days. I will do some videos on them. I will say the Nemo has a real nice vestibule, but that Copper Spur has alot more pockets to keep your phone & watch, socks, puffy...whatever...maps...off the floor & dry.

I went to Oregon once & the rangers hasseled me for hammocking along the bike trail. Beautiful place, just way more like two societies or something over there by Portland where I was.
Here in Illinois you just put up your hammock a bit off the bike trail & no one cares. They might assume you are homeless but don't seeminly pitty you & route you out.
Next time I want to take that bus from Eugene to Bend & hop out near The Sisters & go hiking: maybe make my way down to that Strawberry Lake & further even.
Nice touch reccommending to wash the tent. I never guessed the dust to hurt it, but that makes sense.

Thanks for a great review. I have the 2017 3-person version of the tent, which is substantially different from the version shown here. I loved it and gave it all the TLC I could, but sadly a pole broke during high winds at Joshua Tree. Despite trying to work wit Big Anges' customer service, I can't seem to get a correct replacement pole set, one that's compatible with my 2017 model.

To Cassie who asked about heavy rain...fine if its 'vertical rain' BUT if wind and rain then totally different. As the vent is high the rain blows straight in and through the mesh and onto your sleep system. If very windy and you try and close the vent it blows open again as velcro area too small to hold the vent closed.
This is a fabulous tent but has weather limitations. I've used Big Aggies for 10 years now but keep for fairer weather. No Apex guy out points either ( like on MSR Hubbas) so when wind direction changes the sides collapse in.

Thanks for your lovely and informative introduction to this tent! Did you ever use it in very hot weather, like 80 to 90 degree temps? I'm planning extended traveling in mostly warm / tropical climates, and I always need a lot of air and ventilation, more than most people, at any time of year
Yes I did. When sleeping in weather that hot you’ll just need to sleep with the rain fly off.

I'm searching for a tent that's well ventilated with minimal condensation, even with a rain fly on, but perhaps with the rain fly staked out to create awnings over the doors.

If you keep the poles separately you could definitely put it in a different bag. But the poles are very long.
Poles in side pocket of pack
Fold inner flat
Fold flysheet flat
Place last on top inside backpack. Spreads the weight . Much easier to pack and stays dry... especially if you line your Pack with a large trash bag.😁
Never attach a tent on outside base of a backpack.😩😩 Destroys your spine. Heavy kit top of Pack always.

Just a quick question, it easy to set un the tent under rain? Like footprint/rainfly first then the inner tent while inside?
I'm considering getting this tent or the MSR Hubba in 1p size.. and that's ont of the main problem I face : Bering able to set up the tent under rain.. without having the inside wet.

You can do that with this tent but only if you have the foot print that goes with the tent.

I love your review. I just bought this tent in the new Platinum version and it is in transit to me. It would be great if you could figure out how to pitch the fly and body as one unit. Both my current tents are Scottish designed tactical forces tents and they both set up with fly and body as one. That is a vastly superior set up in many ways, particularly in the rain. Any ideas?
I don’t think you can set them up at the same time be size you have to hook the tent to the stakes before putting the fly on. That type of set up system is more seen in mountaineering type tents.

Have you tried the Tiger Wall? I use the 3 man of this as my year round tent and it has never let me down, even for snow camping!
I liked that one because of the low weight but it’s not free standing so that’s why I stayed away from it. It also has that sloped issue I was talking about where the headroom diminishes so quickly and that space becomes useless. My old tent the Flycreek UL2 had that and I hated it.

I know the rule of thumb is to typically go up a size when you have 2 people camping.
I am doing a 14er in CO with my fiancé and the sites only allow 2 person tents.

Just tell the busy-body site managers that it's a 2-man.. It doesn't say 2-man on the outside - are they gonna get a tape measure out?
It can definitely fit two people but I’d keep the backpacks in the vestibules if you’re in there with two people.
Would making the tyvek piece the size of the awnings make it anything but better, i.e weight or in the way e.g?
I mean it will weigh more yes. Just make sure fits exactly within the awning. If you have it peel out rain will get on it and run under your tent.
Does the left (awning) side of the fly not just roll back across the left pole, it looks like there's toggle there? Or is there another reason you like to roll it up?
It does roll but it’s a little awkward when I do it that way. I like to have it completely out of the way.
I have this tent and I love it as well! One question I have-do you fold up your tent each time or just stuff it in the stuff sack? Also, do you wash your Tyvek prior to using it?
I stuff the tent and rainfly, I don't fold it. If you fold it the same way every time, the creases will eventually create wear areas. I did not wash my tyvek before using it.

Cool tent, I really like that awning roll up feature. 🤔 wonder if they’ll start using that on other models ? I really like my tiger wall 2 mostly because of the weight. Still trying to get used to that double zipper door design though. All in all BA makes great tents.
Yea I was very interested in the Tiger Wall because of the weight but I needed something free standing.

@@christianb8228 There have been multiple circumstances where I am camping somewhere very rocky like in the Wallowas or the Sierra where you can't drive stakes into the ground. Also places where it's sandy, it's impossible to put stakes in the ground.

Nice tent for sure, Ive been really enjoying my REI SL1 QuarterDome, I had one of the original QuarterDome tents and it was coffin like. The new design is simply awesome. Actually very similar in design to that tent. Gotta ask, with a nice green being offered, in color,why orange ? Oh my ! Thanks for the review, Cheers !
The olive green was sold out. Also it blends in too much. If I am in an emergency and need to be seen by search and rescue this orange tent will do the trick.

@@MeetMeOutside Lol I thought the same thing. I have the green and I love it. It’s a little fragile but much less fussy than the ultralight tents to save 1 more pound. I camp on a lot of granite so free standing was also a must.

Hello :) would you choose the 2 person or 3 person version for a couple? How much room is left when you are two, and two bags?
Probably a 3 person if you’re going to be with someone all the time. I am rarely with someone else in the tent so that’s why I have the two person.
I'd be interested to hear how you pack it away in your rucksack? I have an Osprey Stratos 50, so it's not wide enough to place it horizontal. I'm thinking I'll separate the poles and tent. Put the poles viertical to one side and the text horizontal in another stuff sack, but I'd love to get your thoughts.
I just put it all together vertical on one side of my pack.
Buy the Bike Pack Version. Poles break down shorter. They fit between drop bars of a bicycle.

Definitely get a two person tent.
Definitely get a 3-man tent ESPECIALLY if you have a dog too.. the extra weight and bulk is minimal and the extra confort is immeasurable..
Looks like a great tent. My only question: can you fit the tent into your backpack sideways?
No the poles are too long for that. You can easily put it in your pack vertical though.
Things fit better if you don’t sack them. Just put your tent into the bottom of your backpack as if it were a stuff sac. Will save you room and weight. This allows the weight to distribute evenly. I do the same with my down sleeping bag. Regular cotton sleeping bag always needs a compression sack though.

I have a the Kumo 36 UL backpack, will the tent be too big for my backpack ?
I have no idea. You could always strap it to the outside. The poles are pretty long.

For two people, I’d strongly recommend the UL3. My daughter and I have the UL3 and it’s perfect for backpacking for two people (no way could it sleep 3 people). With dogs, particularly if they are medium to large, I’d bump up to the UL4.
Agree with the comment below. If you are camping with your significant other AND dogs, definitely go for the UL3 for sure!!!
@@HikeOregon going light is a must. We sleep in a straight up 2 person and our Ridgeback and Mastador sleep snuggly on top of me. The room in the UL2 looks 👍 great!
It is definitely a roomy 2 person tent. I would say a lot of tents that say 2 person are not, this one comfortably fits two people and some gear. As you saw, the vestibules are bigger than most other big Agnes tents and it by far has the most headroom so all of that really makes a difference.
@@HikeOregon Our gear always hangs out in the vestibules! As long as the weather lets us.
One of the big advantages of the footprint is that it allows you to set up the fly before the tent, like during a heavy rain. I wonder if you can install grommets in Tyvek. It seems pretty durable. Also: 1:14 Thank you for not saying, "stoked". Currently the most overused word in the English language.
I installed grommets on tyvek before. It’s super durable!! But yes having the right footprint does allow you to set up the tent in a head rain so that your tent doesn’t get soaked.

I honestly have no idea what that means on the REI website.
Another argument for Tyvek is that is doesn't hold any water at all when compared to a footprint when, if on wet ground, will soak up some water, which you'll have to carry.

Do the pre bent poles make it that much more bulky when packed?
A little bit. the poles just go inside my pack on the side. It’s not a small tent all packed up, that’s for sure.
Lol, I had the REI Quarter Dome 1 for years, the same model that you HATED, haha. It’s now time to retire it, so I just bought the 1-P version of the latest Copper Spur. My other options were the Tiger Wall 1 and the newest Quarter Dome. I gotta wait 2 weeks for my CS to arrive. I’m looking forward to getting it. Glad you like yours!
Copper spur is a free standing tent whereas the tiger wall is not. That’s why I went with the CS. The tiger wall is significantly lighter though.
Have you had any issues with the TipLocks breaking?

Free standing tents are the best, I love being able to pick it up and dump out sand etc. 😂😂
Or realize you’re not level or there’s a big root underneath you. Just pick up and move. I love it!

What i absolutly dont like about that Tent is that the Footprint ( the Original one for the Tent ) does not connect to the Tent Floor so you will have to use 4 additional Stakes for the Footprint.
Also the Weight AND price of the Footprint / Groundsheet is just rediculous.
For that Money they should just give u the damn groundsheet for free with the Tent
Is it easy or difficult to tuck the tent back in the tent bag?
I stuff the tent so it’s very easy.
I was so close to buying this tent but got scared off by some reviews of it being very delicate. I'm always curious though if those are overstated... I ended up going with the Big Agnes Seedhouse2, and it's fine but I also like the dome shape, 2 side doors and vestibules better on this style.
It’s the same material as my previous Big Agnes Fly Creek tent which is not delicate. Yes there is mesh but the mesh is not delicate. As long as you’re not snagging it on trees you’ll be totally fine.
The failures I've read about have involved serious wind and conditions outside those which it was designed for. A friend uses the previous model for mild 4 season backpacking in Montana.

a previous reviewer of this tent said the fabric is finer than the hubba for eg. He was concerned about rippage over time. have you had any so far?
It seems sturdy too me. I wouldn’t use it without a ground sheet but I personally haven’t had any holes, rips or tears.
Hello, do you think this tent will do well during winter/snow camping?
It is not rated for snow loads and it does have some condensation issues when it is really really cold out. It is a 3 season tent but if it’s not in the teens where you are and not actively snowing it will be fine.

Yes bathtub floor. Hold up really great in rain, I’ve spent many hours during summer storms inside the tent with zero issues.

Have you had this tent in serious, long-lasting pouring rain? Do you and your gear stay 100 percent dry? I am considering buying this tent or a very expensive dyneema tent but I dont really want to spend the money on dyneema.
It rained on my tent all night and I stayed dry. The tent flies are meant to protect you from lots of rain and unless it’s old, it will not soak through.

For the most part all high end big name tents are waterproof.
I have a different BA model (Seedhouse SL 2 person) and it has withheld heavy rains and hail storms. No issue. Owned the tent for 5+ years and it still holds up. Like any good quality gear, it will hold up it you take care of it.
Hey There! Looking for the best lightest 4 person family backpacking tent, so far I see the “Big Agnus Copper Spur HV UL4 Tent 4 person and 3 season” that is only 5lbs 8 oz for a 4 person tent! Do you think this is the best light family backpacking tent option for 4 person or do you think there is a better one? I have a wife and 3 small kiddos to stuff in there. It’s not cheap at $650. Thanks!
Zpacks has the Triplex tent but it only sleeps 3 but it’s much lighter. Only 22 ounces.
Richard, I own the UL4 and I think it’d be tight but possibly doable, depending on the age/size of your kids. Your gear will definitely not fit in the main compartment, but the tent has two fairly large vestibules. Mine has lasted me 4 years in all four seasons without a single tear or snag. I use a groundsheet every single time for longevity since it is definitely an investment.

Still love this tent. I don’t think I’ll ever find a better tent. It holds up great in wind and rain.

My Copper Spur from 2012 still rocks. I don't like the "awning" either on the new ones. Its two extra zippers and gimmicky. It makes it hard to enter the tent. I don't get this feature

There is two versions apparently I want the bike riding version
It depends on what you are looking for. The bike packing tent is 5 oz heavier and costs $50 more than the hiking version but the poles are shorter. My poles fit inside my pack no problem so that is never something I thought about needing.

How do you manage pitching in epic rain?
I just do it super fast. Had to do that in the Sierra.

Why would you buy a expensive UL tent, and then bring some heavy/unwieldy construction material? (and is the footprint needed anyway, I own 2 tents which don't have footprints, one in whic is a UL tent)
Tyvek is not much heavier than the foot print I would buy for the tent. And if I can save $70 I am all for carrying 3 ounces more. When camping in certain areas I would say a footprint is definitely necessary to protect your tent from getting holes. It also keeps your tent bottom dry, that way you only have to unpack the foot later when you’re taking a lunch break to dry it out.
@@HikeOregon Do you always use the footprint? As I said. Ive never been camping with a footprint, and used my regular heavy tent for many trips with no problem. My UL tent has only been used a few times, but also with no problems not using a footprint. I see the point with the wet/dirty underside, but is it really worth the extra space and weight in the backpack?
The peace of mind is worth it to me. I’m also not a gram weenie but I am a penny pincher so I’d rather carry and use something if it means I won’t get holes in my tent or wear out the bottom of my tent prematurely and have to buy a new one in a few years. No thanks.
Anyone have any luck finding a footprint? They all seem sold out/unavailable.
Just use some Tyvek in the mean time. There is some sort of supply shortage and rei and Big Agnes are constantly sold out of the footprint.

Have you used this tent during the last few months or in SUPER🤣 windy conditions if so how has it held up?
This is not a 4 season tent, so I don't take it out into the snow. It is not meant to hold up with a snow load, the stakes would likely break, especially with the super wet heavy snow we get here in the Cascades. There aren't really a lot of places to camp where I live during the winter that don't have snow so I don't take it out until spring. I imagine it would do great in super windy conditions because it has sooo many guylines you can stake out.
@@HikeOregon wind is my problem most of the time. Oregon dunes get pretty windy from time to time and it would be nice to not have my tent torn down when I get back from a ride. That and its hard to stake down to the sand. I usually weigh everything down. And the little ones would appreciate it.
@@seanmuehlhauser9612 If you bring hiking poles, there's a trick you can do to secure it even more by using hiking poles and two extra bungychords/guylines.
On the side that the wind is coming from, take your hiking poles, take two of the longer guylines that is attached to the tent, attach them to your poles, then take your extra chords and make a loop and secure a line from the hiking pole to the ground and attach it to the stake. (Actually, you might need 2-4 extra stakes for this.)

I just bought the tent and footprint. The tent had a 20% discount and together it came out to $550. Sheesh

I have never seen someone clip the tent to the poles while the poles lay onthe ground! Not bad. Lol
Soooo much easier that way. Otherwise I feel like I’m ripping the tent.
But I would think that might stress the poles more as they lift the tent body versus structured poles in place. Just thinking of how poles used to bend and brrak lifting sleeved tent bodies. I have always clipped the tent to raised poles. But I must admit your way looks easier and may be better in wind.

REIs website shows this is semi freestanding...this looks pretty freestanding to me.
I think it’s qualified as semi free standing because of the rain fly. That kind of does have to be staked out but yea the actual tent is fully free standing and that’s why I bought it.
