Then all this stuff happens and it's back to back like he's convinced now and maybe he thinks hes going crazy with this conspiracy, but he has no real time to sit and think it through since it's all happening so fast with no real break for him to think about it, so he is getting suspicious/paranoid/etc. And then it escalates as the movie goes on. Learning about Ghost Watch (I kind of love the concept of radio dramas I need to listen to some) and Tom Savini on Letterman was like my favorite facts of the episode
Poor Gus. Treated like garbage not just for being the second banana but being Irish and Catholic (the stage manager emphatically calling him a “Mick” was giving Alan Arkin dialing up the anti-Italian slurs in So I Married an Axe Murderer), embarrassed almost to death, and then the neck twist. Pour several out for Gus
Ah, and I forgot to add, Berwyn is a running joke in Svengoolie because it is referencing Johnny Carson, who joked about Burbank frequently on the Tonight Show Svengoolie wanted his own “Burbank” sounding town to parody.
Just a little note on Ghostwatch. It wasnt actually presented as real as the interstitial announcer did say something along the lines of it being fictional but anyone who tuned once the show had already started had no idea, cos it looked real and of course the show itself played it straight. So viewers were genuinely terrifed when it all goes wrong and the BBC had to deal with the anger. Great show and it started my love for horror. Another British horror themed show I'd recommend is Inside No 9. Think you guys would dig it.
I've never heard of it but Late Night With The Devil is my favorite movie of the year so far and the format of it was one of my favorite parts I'm definitely going to try and track down Ghostwatch
@@Werewolf914I reccomend _Ghostwatch_ over contemporaries like _Special Report_ and _Without Warning._ As it's the only one of this "fake broadcast" sub-genre that's allowed to have dead air, ad lib and be awkward. You know, like a real broadcast. The others are overdone.
@@overlookers I had no idea there was an entire Subgenre of Fake Broadcast, I have to work this weekend so I'm waiting till my next day off to watch Ghostwatch, I love Found Footage/Mockumentary Horror and fake broadcasts is sort of in a similar vein of movie I'd imagine
For anyone wondering the Nixon Quote, it's from the Watergate tapes. He says the grove is "The most faggy god damn San Fransico thing you could imagine". It's wildly funnier if you read it in Norm MacDonald's voice
They actually explain the handheld view by saying there is a docu crew in attendance, one of whom you see filming when everything goes to hell and people are running towards the end.
Hell yes, Ghostwatch is so incredible, everyone should watch it! For non-Brits, important context is that Sarah Greene, the main presenter, was famous for doing children's tv, so lots of people let their young kids stay up and watch it, assuming it would be family friendly! The BBC got a LOT of complaints the next day
IFSIP (International Federation for Scientific Investigation of the Paranormal) is most likely a spoof on CSICOP (Committee for the Scientific Investigation Claims Of the Paranormal) of which James Randi was one of the founders.
I had the pleasure of working with Sharp FX to provide the practical make-up effects for the film. So glad the movie is getting the recognition it deserves.
I have a theory that Jack was also made to kill his wife while also being manipulated into sacrificing the little girl on-camera. Like through some weird supernatural time manipulation, Jack was forced to go back in time and finish his wife off as some extra salt in the wound courtesy of the demon he'd dealt with.
I think they kind of hint at that in the end where he speaks with Madeline or imagines he’s speaking to her when she was dying. I think the demon basically accused him of sacrificing Madeline for Night Owls to be a success & the demon gives him what he wants climaxing in Lily’s own death by Jack’s hand
I get the vibe that he did sacrifice Madeline, he just didn’t realize that’s what he was doing. I got the vibe that he thought the grove was some goofy nonsense he had to do to be part of the boys’ club, but didn’t get how serious it was until things started going down with Lily and when the psychic guy mentioned Minnie and his wedding ring. I think if he did know, he wouldn’t have treated the possession thing as lightly as he did. And it seemed like he genuinely loved Madeline and wouldn’t have intentionally hurt her, but that’s up for interpretation ofc.
I think it was more a metaphorical thing in that her sickness was the price he had to pay for fame, intentional or not. The scene at the end where he stabs her is just him struggling with the guilt that he's responsible. He may not have even known her life was the price, but he paid it all the same.
Don't have anything particular to say about the ep; I've even still watching. But I've been with yall since year one and am also from Detroit (DC now). Always watch everything you put out; so now I'm commenting, liking (always), and sharing the new channel on purpose to help. You've come so far! Proud of yall.
I'm extremely grateful for chelsea sharing her grievances towards AI-generated content, and how it can hurt creatives. It's existence is a horror that can be easily dismissed, so pointing out how much harm it does is much appreciated! Artists need to stay realistic but also optimistic and resilient!
Please feel free to keep promoting this channel because, even though I subscribed earlier this month, the algorithm hasn't been promoting it. I had to manually search up the channel a second time and flood it with likes just to give my home page the hint.
I think the reason that you didn't love the ending anywhere near as much as I did was because I watched it alone in the dark at full volume with zero spoilers, fully immersed to the point where the film basically had me hypnotized, which was definitely the way to go, I will never forget my viewing experience.
The movie you’re referencing is The Fourth Kind. It’s the one with the weird creepy owl in it. Definitely worth a rewatch! I personally think it still holds up. It’s eerie and disturbing.
I do agree, but also, to fucking crucify the movie to the extent people did, for using it WITH the art team, not INSTEAD OF, for three or four still images? Not as big of a deal as people made, and are making, it out to be
Well they mention Marvel using AI and the reason being is because they felt it was thematically appropriate. Why not come at marvel studio? We didn't draw the line there and now look where it got us. Attacking a small indie horror film
I think this movie was good. I really enjoyed it and I feel like James and Chelsea did too. But we can all agree there was no place for AI generated imagery in this setting. They saved no time and no money, these images wouldn't have existed in the time period the movie took place. Anyone on the team could have made a more appropriate title card for the movie. The creators of Late Night will have to try not to take the palpable frustration in the art industry personally. The people upset about the use of AI generated imagery in entertainment will have to keep speaking out as loud as possible. The entertainment industry is one of the few industries where public opinion matters, and if the studio heads that allow the people I admire to eat and pay rent decide that AI generated imagery is more lucrative than lovingly rendered art, there will be less and less opportunities for people with personality and ideas. I hope you guys understand where the problem lies. With the companies becoming fabulously wealthy selling the ability to make "just good enough" pictures with an instantaneous turnover, not with this indie studio that used them one time for a couple of title cards.
It’s actually really nice to watch an analysis with people who know way more about late night than I do! I feel like I’ll get way more out of my next watch
This AI conversation was great and I'm glad that Chelsea also mentioned the Civil War posters cause I didn't see those and they look so silly to be coming from a company like A24. They also look so dead and dull so I'm glad that there are people who are approaching these companies with some disregard cause the use of these generated AI tools should have no place in film and stuff. It's lazy, it's ugly most of the time, and if we start settling for our films our pieces of art to have less than the utmost value in making the film than why make it at all? Why go through like 9/10 the effort and take a shortcut to get through the last 1/10?
The Art department on the film confirmed they were the ones who used AI generated images, they were fine with experimenting with it. The Beyondfest story isn't true, was there and can confirm.
@@LTediusL That's crazy cause by that logic you think the Dead Meat Podcast should be held to the same standard because they choose to use AI Generative music. Yet here I am, a musician and artist of over 20 years not giving a shit about the art department or Dead meat using AI openly for their own projects for minor details in overall large productions.
@@oschmegano Many editing software can take an audio track and create loops and phrases within the mix to extend tracks or even splice them to fit markers in scenes. As for AI Generated music entirely, I know that music I've released for video games was maliciously used by a companyt that sells a software that AI generates music for game devs.
The movie itself is more than decent, I would even say great, so it's a damn shame that they included ANY AI imagery at all. It frustrates me deeply that people are claiming the disdian for AI use in this movie is being blown out of proportion. People will say "it's ONLY three frames", or "it's such a small part that it doesn’t matter" but that's the exact point! If it was such a miniscule detail, they could have easily removed those transition cards! If it was such a small section of the movie that contributed nothing to the story, why include them at all? In fact, the directors added those AI images AFTER the fact (a statement substantiated by the directors themselves), so it makes the inclusion of these images even more baffling. I'm glad you guys addressed this issue and I definitely feel more in line with Chelsea's view. We shouldn’t let any filmmakers get away with AI "art" use, full stop. AI "art" is an affront to artists around the world. On top of depriving people in the film industry of job opportunities, it robs artists of the opportunity to contribute a piece of their mind and soul to a body of work.
It is important to note that this film was made before all of the controversy about AI, if i remember correctly. So i think, in this situation only, the use of AI is not a big deal; whereas any future films using AI should absolutely be criticized.
@@twindrill2852 I'm not saying we shouldn't. I agree we need to (i am a writer myself, in college, and see my potential job market shrinking more and more due to the use of AI). All I am saying is that we should take into consideration when the film was made and how AI was seen at the time of production when criticizing this aspect of the film.
@@rue2838that bs, artist have been pushing against ai ever since tech bros started with their nft shill, there hasn’t been a space of time when ai didn’t get pushback from creatives, they have been telling us this was coming for years now, there is not claiming that it was made innocently since the entire datasets are made by stealing human work, they don’t get off by acting like they didn’t know

Late night with the devil was one hell of a trip to me mostly because i didnt watch any trailers,i just saw the poster and was like “that looks neat” one thing i apperciate about the movie was the use of music going from pentagrams forever my queen to showcase the chaos and horror of the 70s to flo and eddies keep it warm as a more mellow introduction to the host was fantastic.(also using a band called pentagram in your satanic themed movie is genius)
Congratulations, on getting 660 comments and on starting Dead Meat Presents. I always love the Dead Meat chemistry between James & Chelsea. You guys host a wonderful talk show full of lots to learn and think about 😊🎉
Shout out to the Good Fiend production card mention!! I know the guy that directed that stop motion and got to see the storyboard planning that went into it :) Love the podcast as always!! ❤
I’m so glad you’re actually covering this because I’ve seen so many people just decide to never talk about it anymore because of the AI thing. With the AI thing, I fully agree that this conversation has to be done. But I think that we need to hold every single thing that blatantly uses AI to task, even if you think it’s thematically appropriate like Secret Invasion. I will say that if the people behind the movie were telling the truth about the images being worked on post generation meaning it was used more as a tool, I can kind of appreciate what they were trying to do. Because of the nature of the movie, so many tools in the horror toolbox couldn’t be used. As we all know, AI imagery is just bizarre and often has a very uncanny feel to it. Maybe that weird feeling was what they wanted, an extra bit of unease to make the end land just that much more. That said, I’m with Chelsea, just George Lucas this thing. And I’m so glad you mentioned the production logo credit parade. It made me laugh so hard and I agree that Good Fiend was the best one.
AI sucks for art and especially news media, but I agree that this movie shouldn't be overlooked for having a very small amount of it. I think the boycotting issue is rough because the principal behind it is important, but at the cost of a lot of hard work, time, and effort. It might be naive, but I just hope the studio big wigs get it through their heads so everyone can get what they want.
Loved this movie and I think most of that love came from my serious love for late night talk shows. It was one of the only reasons I was allowed to stay up late as a kid and we all watched together as a family. I wasn't around until early 80s but I have gone back and seen alot of the 70s episodes online. The nostalgia was so real.
I agree about the behind the scenes stuff. If they had kept the aspect ratio 16:9 during the BTS and ending, but presented it as 4:3 during the talk show, I think it would have worked a lot better.
Definitely need to recommend Inside No 9 for James and Chelsea to view. It's a British Anthology series and is currently due to finish this month with series 9. They have three episodes similar to the whole Ghostwatch/live broadcast/lost media narrative worth checking out. Not to mention the classic Tales From The Crypt episode "Television Terror"
Seconding, would LOVE an episode on Ghostwatch. Tangentially, to anyone who enjoyed Ghostwatch, I really recommend the BBC dark comedy anthology series Inside no 9, specifically the episode Deadline which is an homage/inspired by Ghostwatch.
Off topic rq, I just wanna say I appreciate your videos, you really built my interest for scary movies and helped me understand the art behind them, before I only watched for suspense, now scary movies are a lot more interesting and thank you for putting in the effort still, your work is truly appreciated!
Yay to the new channel and another great podcast episode! As always, you guys do such thorough research and bring such interesting insights and historical/social contexts to your discussion of these movies. Thanks also for your discussion of AI and just how much it sucks when other creatives involved get punished for shitty executive decisions. I think for me, my enthusiasm for this movie definitely waned a lot after seeing AI usage from A24 of all people. To me, they always felt like a company that wasn't afraid to support movies that take very artistic risks, so it felt even more disappointing seeing them rely on AI instead of just hiring artists for these things.
44:25 hey y’all, the actual first appearance of the ghost is at the beginning of the movie @8:21. You can see her in the tv screen before Jack makes his entrance on stage! I noticed a lot of people haven’t caught it yet and I would’ve missed it too had I not been looking at that part of the screen lol
I love hearing both of your guy’s opinion on the whole AI thing cause you just look at it from every angle and you’re not blindsided with rage or anything
Another reference you guys seem to have missed: the owl head costume seems a direct reference to Stage Fright the 1987(ish) slasher film directed by Michelle Soavi, who directed Cemetary Man which you guys just covered. The killer in that movie (and the play the characters are rehearsing in the film) has almost that same exact owl head mask.
This movie did nothing for me, it wasn’t scary enough to be a horror or funny enough to be a comedy, but I’m glad it’s really connecting with people. That being said David Dasmalchian killed it and I hope he gets more leading man roles.
I found it to be ok as well. Nothing special at all. There were no clever set ups or pay offs. I felt like they put every obvious trope of a possessed girl in the movie. The only things that were great were David's performance and the late night 70s talk show aesthetic. I would have really loved it if the demon was fucking around with the production on set and did some more clever devious things to the people and the set.
Yeah, the movie was just fine for me. Cool aesthetic and concept, just not much else beyond that. I do like that it's getting a good reception, if only to solidify that David Dasmalchian can be a leading man in movies.
It reminded me a ton of a creepypasta or a notsleep story, a very solid idea with a lot of moving parts that don’t quite connect, all basically being funneled into an ultimately disappointing story with a meh finale. The way it looked and performed felt more like a scary RUclips short rather than a movie, it also reminds me a ton of don’t hug me I’m scared
My wife and I audibly laughed at the production cards. At one point I said, "This is actually the whole movie: just production companies for 90 minutes."
Flo and Eddie rules! I always thought "Keep it Warm" would be the perfect track for a 70's period movie. The whole song is basically a status check on where culture was post 1960s, with references to the Beatles' Legal battles, Grace Slick's substance abuse, the Beach Boys experience with Transcendental meditation, and even the 1966 University of Texas Tower Shootings. I would classify Flo and Eddie as less a parody group, but more like Pop Savants, putting them closer to TMBG than Tenacious D. If you haven't already, I highly recommend the album "Keep it Warm" is on, Moving Targets. They also did the Skeet Surfing song from Top Secret, if you're familiar with that movie.
I LOVED this movie, a slow burn, but worth it. Needs a couple watches to catch everything. I love you guys and your enthusiasm for horror, my favorite genre. David Dalchamain kills this whole movie. Did get a little weirded out by the Danny Masterson lookalike producer character, not gonna lie. I only wish the possession scenes had been longer - that was the most gripping part of the movie.
One note: Jack mentions in his monologue, his parents in Berwyn, Illinois, a reference to Svengoolie, who mentions Berwyn about 5 times an episode.
Nice!
GHOSTWATCH is so good!

I’m kinda bothered that he said it.
They actually explain the handheld view by saying there is a docu crew in attendance, one of whom you see filming when everything goes to hell and people are running towards the end.
And they say that , right?
Hell yes, Ghostwatch is so incredible, everyone should watch it! For non-Brits, important context is that Sarah Greene, the main presenter, was famous for doing children's tv, so lots of people let their young kids stay up and watch it, assuming it would be family friendly! The BBC got a LOT of complaints the next day
I hope they cover Abigail, that movie slaps
Same!!
It really does
Loved it! I know they saw it and enjoyed it so I'm sure they will!

Hey guys, never apologise for going off on a nostalgia tangent. We’d all happily listen to you talk about your special interests for hours! ❤
James and Chelsea, I love the random nostalgia rabbit holes! Keep on just having fun because it just adds so much to the podcast. 😊
27:07 by the 6th production logo me and my friend were losing it. that was so damn funny! 9 PRODUCTION LOGOS!
it was crazy, honestly. i'm like "where's the movie?????"
I laughed at the "looking in the mirror on acid" bit. Chelsea knows. It makes you look like a sweaty Ren & Stimpy gross out freeze frame.
Congrats on the new channel! Can’t wait to see Dead Meat progress in the years to come!
I had the pleasure of working with Sharp FX to provide the practical make-up effects for the film. So glad the movie is getting the recognition it deserves.
Love when y’all go off topic, I find it endearing :)
I believe the Sinai they mention is Mount Sinai hospital in NY.
Really appreciate your A.i views.
Let's keep the humans creating the art.
I'm extremely grateful for chelsea sharing her grievances towards AI-generated content, and how it can hurt creatives. It's existence is a horror that can be easily dismissed, so pointing out how much harm it does is much appreciated! Artists need to stay realistic but also optimistic and resilient!
The guy who owned that titan submersible was also a memeber of the bohemian grove club
Please feel free to keep promoting this channel because, even though I subscribed earlier this month, the algorithm hasn't been promoting it. I had to manually search up the channel a second time and flood it with likes just to give my home page the hint.
I know barely anything about late night shows so your enthusiasm about this was wonderful!
I’ve seen it 4 times! I just turned 50 and this hits all the nostalgic feels!
I'm sure Molly prefers to sit with you but it be cute if she had her own chair and lil microphone
My favorite horror film of the year so far! Super cozy 70’s horror. Cant wait to watch this film closer to Halloween.
#GusDidNothingWrong
Mine too! I still can’t get over the final act, it was so disturbing
Thank you Chelsea! Art is important BECAUSE it was created by people. Anybody who doesn't see that shouldn't be creating.
I do agree, but also, to fucking crucify the movie to the extent people did, for using it WITH the art team, not INSTEAD OF, for three or four still images? Not as big of a deal as people made, and are making, it out to be
@@wesjallIt will lead to more and more down the line. We have to draw a line now before it goes further.
The AI art looked awesome. It’s completely irrelevant. It’s like a few seconds of the movie. People can get over it. It’s not going anywhere.
It’s actually really nice to watch an analysis with people who know way more about late night than I do! I feel like I’ll get way more out of my next watch
The Bloomington Grove thing makes the book "You're not supposed to die tonight" make way more sense. I love when I learn new things
That book was the first thing I thought of as well, lol
I've been considering reading that book. Is it good?
@@Victoria-fs9jo I would say it is for a lower reading level (middle school, probably) but it's a quick and fun read
Oh, that's actually rather interesting. Thank you for clarifying!
Just because the art department was okay with it, it doesn’t mean folks have to be okay with machine generated slop creeping its way into movies
@@TurtleBoxOfficial Wait, AI generated music is a thing? How would that even work?
@@oschmegano Many editing software can take an audio track and create loops and phrases within the mix to extend tracks or even splice them to fit markers in scenes.
As for AI Generated music entirely, I know that music I've released for video games was maliciously used by a companyt that sells a software that AI generates music for game devs.
pro tip: the channel’s old promo code for a free month of shudder still works😎😉
Hopefully they keep it. Free advertising for both Shudder and the channel.
That or just…hire illustrators for the title cards. There’s ton of people out there looking for work.
Boycott the frames, not the rest of the film where people actually worked on.

Been so excited for you two to cover this. It’s the first time since Nope I straight up fell in love with a horror movie
i loved this episode!!! as someone who doesn't really have any history with late night tv i especially loved you guys' tangents, it was cool hearing what u thought about the way this movie relates to the famous hosts' legacies
Never feel like you can't go on tangents. Like you said with art we are watching yall for yall, tangents included.😊
I truly think the real threat is Minnie. She’s the one that keeps coming up and she’s the one fucking with everything. She’s pissed off at Jack.
Also! When the glasses are shattering while the therrim is going off on its own, the black glass/mirror on the table shows Minnie's face briefly! And Christou loses his accent when he channels Minnie.
This episode is peak podcast for the tangents alone, love it
That Pat Finnerty shout out at the end gave me life! I love his videos, but nobody ever knows who I'm talking about. I swear, y'all never fail to make yourselves cooler and cooler to me lol

LETS GOOOOO HORROR SURVIVOR 5, time to rewatch all 4 again!

1:12:35 Thanks for trying to keep on track towards the end, but we all subscribed to the new channel for maximum tangents please
Shout out to the Good Fiend production card mention!! I know the guy that directed that stop motion and got to see the storyboard planning that went into it :) Love the podcast as always!! ❤
Cedars Sinai hospital is Los Angeles, but Mount Sinai hospital is New York City, so they meant Mount Sinai.
While this one might not have landed for me overall, David Dastmalchian will continue to solidify himself as a gifted horror actor !!
1:11:20 the ghost effect looks like the ghost on the top of mount gordo in gta v
I was really hoping you would mention Ghostwatch in this video and I’m glad you did. I would love to see a podcast episode on it.
OH HECK YEAH! I didn't know about the second channel- I mainly watch for the podcast so I am hyped
Lily was supposed to be sacrificed when she was 13, the demon did all this so that Jack would sacrifice her with the dagger.
The hospital was definitely one of the Mount Sinai Health System which are all over new york
Whoops! Shows how little we know about New York. Our bad!
James’ little rant about owl people made me haha
U guys worry about your tangents but I love it. It’s like we’re just hanging out with you 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿❤
Listened to the podcast already but I'm watching it on YT to support the channel hahah! Thank you for keeping me entertained through my flight❤
Saw this as a preview in cinema and I was sooo excited to see DeadMeat talk about it!
I've never been into talk shows but this movie still sucked me in, and I adore the cosmic horror vibe of the ending 😌💕😌
The nostalgia spiral is so fun to listen to 😆 😆 I love this show thank you so much Chelsea and James you guys are the best
here for the tangents honestly 🤣🤣 "two minutes!" lol
I haven't seen this movie yet, but I really enjoy you guys' commentary on just about anything!
This movie did nothing for me, it wasn’t scary enough to be a horror or funny enough to be a comedy, but I’m glad it’s really connecting with people. That being said David Dasmalchian killed it and I hope he gets more leading man roles.
I also thought it was just alright. Ending felt abrupt too and the style was better than the plot
I liked it just fine, but I think one viewing was enough for me. Still better than what Blumhouse is currently making
You guys, PLEASE do another drunk Disney. They’re my comfort RUclips videos and you guys are so hilarious!
Loved the AI images discussion and its relevance to the film and the industry over all. Yous nailed the talking points.
Love the split between the channels
I LOVED this movie, a slow burn, but worth it. Needs a couple watches to catch everything. I love you guys and your enthusiasm for horror, my favorite genre. David Dalchamain kills this whole movie. Did get a little weirded out by the Danny Masterson lookalike producer character, not gonna lie. I only wish the possession scenes had been longer - that was the most gripping part of the movie.
Off topic, I really really enjoy the Royal Rumble Horror comps, please keep them coming! I'm old school, I'm a Rowdy Roddy Piper fan!!❤❤❤❤
I loved the “Walker Texas Ranger” lever on Conan 😂😂😂😂
