Resto-Mod 1985 FXR Custom │Build Details and Test Ride

  • The Culver's 1985 FXR has been a sort of "family heirloom" for a long time. Because the FXR continues to be such a popular legacy motorcycle, we see a lot of riders upgrading them and preferring them over a lot of the modern offering from Harley. In an effort to continue riding the motorcycle, Rick has replaced many of the critical components to keep it performing at it's peak. Everything from motor mounts, gaskets, brakes, to lighting have been upgraded to a modern part. To top it off the final and most important mod is the S&S crate motor. Nick, talks us through the bike and takes it for a spin.

    Ive got a 93 FXR, I dont think i’ll ever enjoy another motorcycle as much as this one! The FXR stands out from every other bike in my opinion, especially with some high quality tall shocks, upgraded front end, along with some motorwork and air cleaner + exhaust upgrades!

    It is a weird feeling to me to hear talking of these things as heirlooms passed down. Makes me feel sorta old since '85 is when I first got my motorcycle license. I can only say that some of us(your dad included, I hope) are still alive and well. Me and my past bikes: CBR350, GS550, GS550ES, FJ1100(one of the best), GSXR750(the worst of the bunch...'90),ZX7('93 and a damned fine machine), ZX9R, '06 YZFR1, ' 06 CBR600RR. And now, a '23 Low Rider S. Odd to think that dealers would run for cover is asked to work on any of my beloved machines, just because of age. I kept the R1 and it seems to be getting along well enough with the Low Rider S. All is peaceful in the garage.

    I just completely rebuilt an old “iron barrel” Royal Enfield Bullet 500, down to a new crankshaft and new crankcase bearings. Obviously a very different animal, but the challenges were similar dealing with an older and certainly obsolete machine. Great video and story!

    My first brand new Harley was an 89 FXRS. Great bike for its time. This upgraded bike is nice, but is not really the true FXR experience. Sort of like saying I have a 55 panhead with a 96 inch S+S engine, Baker 6 speed and Brembo brakes. Not really a 55 at all. Whatever, I guess you can only review new bikes with different paint for so long on this channel. The travel videos are awesome though!

    If Harley was to bring back the FXR, they'd be doing enthusiasts and themselves a huge service. There's a couple current models they could axe like the Street Bob and the Softail Standard and replace with a new FXR that has a base model with a Milwaukee 8 107. They could even offer a 114 as a higer end engine. Give it a good looking tank and rear fender like the the Lowrider S and ST with retro styled paint, but retain a chassis similar to an FLH and they'd have one hell of a platform.

    That’s the sound of the 80s!
    There was the early HD springer fork copied by europeans, the FXR frame and then came the new softail. That’s what it is. HD is a special company, sometimes likes to roll back far in quality and then suddenly catches up, sometimes though with more just more steel brazed on, sadly, while knowing better.
    The FXR is really cool, but for a timed tourist trip across the country I’d take a stock bike, regardless how good the parts&machine shop is.

    To call this motorcycle a “build” is comical. “Build” has become a very loose term used on the internet for any random collection of bolt-on parts fastened to a stock bike. The guy talking in this video is describing a repair job rather than a “build”.

      Its funny because John has literally built motorcycles including the frame, and he calls it a build. I haven't asked Tetsuya, but I doubt he would disagree, and you can see the kind of bikes he "builds" on the channel pretty recently. So why are they wrong? Do we need to cast the cylinders and forge the pistons in house before this counts?

    • @MattLaidlaw
      @MattLaidlaw  8 месяцев назад +6

      Is your definition of a "build" have to include a hand-shaped frame and hand-crafted tins - all painted by the builder? This FXR was basically torn down to the bones. New electrical system, wheels, motor mounts, transmission, suspension, seat, bars, brakes, bags, fairing, and whole new engine. I agree with what you're saying though. "build" has become a loose term thrown around too easily but this bike is a "build" in every sense of the definition.

    • @sportyonetaubert5923
      @sportyonetaubert5923 8 месяцев назад

      From my perspective, many Harley buyers' place looks, feel, and sound over the need to stretch the performance envelope. Hence, I prefer riding and relaxing on my Road King instead of a myriad of faster, lighter, and cheaper bikes. But I understand those who don't and want more excitement. 😊

    • @ericalger5003
      @ericalger5003 8 месяцев назад

      @sportyonetaubert5923 Every single time Harley customers told Harley they wanted something performance oriented it was a sales FLOP. It was failure because of 2 reasons. Reason number 1 is Harley doesn't know a goddamn thing about building performance bikes, and Harley riders are only really interested in power parking in front of bars.

    • @sportyonetaubert5923
      @sportyonetaubert5923 8 месяцев назад

      From my perspective, i don't believe Harley's traditional buyers were wanting a performance bike. Frankly the foreign bikes build plenty of good ones. Harley's that changed traditional looks and ride were built more to bring in non-traditional Harley buyers. So I don't blame traditional Harley buyers. Harley didn't build a bike to sell well enough to people who wouldn't ordinarily buy from Harley.
