    I grew up skating with the pro Ryan Smith quite a bit as there weren't a lot of skate spots in the town we grew up in (Zero New Blood, he's the guy that did the ?18? stair back lip for the closer of the Mystery teaser) . He had just gone pro when we'd met and I had just gotten flow for Circa and was on the local shop team. One day when we were skating, I was trying Kickflip front nosegrinds on a round rail and after a few tries he said "you got it, you just need to lock in. turn your body and lock in overcrook and you got it" and he went and did a kickflip front over crook. It confused the hell out of me, so I was like "dude, they're different tricks". I did exactly what Garrett just did and I just got the most wild deja vu because his response was EXACTLY the same as Johns. Next, the skateboarding industry needs to make nollie rotation tricks follow the same front side and back side rules as the other 3 stances.

    Garrett is completely right about the overcrook. I have been saying that for years.

    • @bovedli
      @bovedli Год назад +2

      Well technically yes.
      I was also an overcrook guy for a long time but then I just thought - 99% of people who grind on the front truck on a round rail pinch it. So it is a nosegrind for them. I mean if I was able to do nosegrinds on round rails even if I pinched it I would still call them nosegrinds.
      Because then there a valid argument could be made on a lot of the 5-0 grinds done either on a rail or on a box that they’re turned, so they are actually Suski or pivot grinds.
      Oh and back 180 nosegrinds? Those are rarely balanced and all the way 180’d. What would those be? Technically back 180 crooks…?
      It’s sometimes logic, sometimes tradition when it comes to trick names. And for me that’s kind of okay as long as we can explain each other what the fuck the trick is that we’re trying.

    • @AlexNiedt
      @AlexNiedt Год назад +2

      @@bovedli "Overcrook" wasn't even really a term when I was growing up. Never even considered that anyone would want to call a nosegrind on a round rail something else because of the natural pinch. And now I still call it a nosegrind when I do them, and I'll continue to do so especially because of the people who get so mad about it. 😆

    I agree 1000% with them being different tricks (Nosegrind and Crook / Overcrook), in the same way a Salad and a 5-0 aren't the same trick, one is locked either heel-side or toe-side with the board strait and the other has to be pinched with both wheels against the ledge or rail (but the same arguments exist there, because if its bs it's a Suski if it's over the rail it's a salad, etc it should just be salad over salad and crook over crook, but i get it and appreciate it the names have historical significance, etc) and while we are on the topic i'm also on the side of recognizing heel-side locked, toe-side locked and cross locked 50-50's as all being their own separate tricks.

    Totally agree with Garet... or blondie? When I learned nosegrinds I took them to round rails and kept them straight. Going for the over crook you need to use way more shoulder and hip involvement. But then again on flat rails its much easier to see the difference.
