Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, has said, "If Police Squad! had been made twenty years later, it would have been a smash. It was before its time. In 1982 your average viewer was unable to cope with its pace, its quick-fire jokes. But these days they'd have no problems keeping up, I think we've proved that.

Leslie Nielsen's long experience as a leading man "serious" actor works so well for him playing the "straight man" with all the silliness that's happening around him and is involuntarily caused by him. :)
i remember him in sci fi movie some planet.i think it was from 1957 and it suprised me how mature that movie was
he doesn't play the straight man in any of the naked gun movies or airplane though, he plays everything completely serious and very deadpan but he is usually NOT the straight man. the straight man in a comedy is the normal guy who reacts to the weirdness, he partakes in the weirdness but with a completely serious face. very different.

I think the hardest I ever laughed was seeing this movie for the first time. Watched it with my dad at 1am a few years ago. Leslie is a legend!

Kevin Smith recycled that joke for the animated Clerks. Dante and Randall are talking about Schindler's List (or 'Flintstone's List' in this case) and Randall's final opinion was: 'Not as funny as Amistad'.
My favourite thing about these movies is the rewatchability.
There's always a joke or something going on in the background.
I remember watching it as a kid and laughing at the obvious slapstick humour, then watching it as a teen understanding more of the jokes and finally as an adult when you know all the references.
This movie is like an ogre.
That "I shoot the bastards, that's my policy." Line is so much more funnier once you've seen Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry deliver it first. LOL
It started out as a series called POLICE SQUAD. It was critically loved by some but didn't do well as a TV show because people would watch it like other sitcoms (during dinner, while chatting with family) and would miss half the jokes because they didn't pay attention. So it only lasted one season but then THE NAKED GUN came out as a sequel to the series of sorts. The first two movies did great and I still rewatch them. The Third wasn't great at the time and definitely doesn't hold up.
And just as Airplane mainly spoofed Zero Hour, the very first episode of Police Squad spoofed an episode of Lee Marvin's M Squad television show. And yes, the critics enjoyed the short series (something like 6 episodes) but it never caught on with the audience enough to get the series renewed.
What they did every episode was have a big name special guest star who dies during the opening credits (Lorne Greene, Florence Henderson, William Shatner, Robert Goulet, William Conrad (radio's Marshal Dillon and TV's Canon) and George Stanford Brown. The credits also included Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln returning fire at the Ford Theatre. There were so many great and hilarious moments. The episode title would be different than the title the announcer says, one episode was titled "The Butler Did It" and that WAS who did it, and every episode would end with a faked freeze frame as the credits and theme song played out. The first episode was directed by the three directors but the other five were by various directors, including (I'm almost sure) Joe Dante. The series was also more deadpanned than Naked Gun although each sequel grew broader and less deadpanned with a lot of reaction shots.
I totally forgot there was a third movie. That's how impressive it was.
Police Squad blew my mind as a kid, especially the end credits.

Police Squad is the stuff of legendary cult television.
Stephanie is a great lesson for screenwriters: even a minor character with no dialogue can have a great arc.
Just to let you know, when this was dubbed into German, the translators wrote entirely new jokes to A. match the lip synchronicity more accurately and B. to substitute cultural references that would have gone right over the german audiences' heads. Then they wrote subs that were neither a direct translation nor match the german dub. So as a germanophone (?) you can watch the movie thrice and get new jokes everytime.
Dang, now I wish I knew enough about German culture + language to watch it.
That happens a lot in comedies. They don't just translate, but really go in and adapt. At least the good dubs are like that. Otherwise it's a bizarre unfunny direct translation, full of references that'll go over peoples heads, and I've seen plenty of both.
That's above and beyond the call of duty. Kudos to the translators!

Naked Gun did quite well in the Box Office, almost $80 million domestically in 1988. This was a spin off movie from the very short lived TV series Police Squad so some were familiar with the characters involved ahead of time

Police Squad was cancelled because the producers thought it had too many jokes in it and people wouldnt understand.

One of my favorite movie of all time.
Why just write a normal comedy when you can write something where every single line is either a set-up or a punch line? Or a punch line that was part of a bigger set-up? Insanely good.
My friend and I watched this movie years ago and laughed our asses off. We then turned on the Naked Gun 2 and laughed our asses off. By the end of the night my chest hurt from laughing.

Saw this movie in the theater when I was 12 and I thought it was hilarious.
It took about 10 years for me to realize how many of the jokes flew right over my head.
I was in high school when this movie first came out and watched it in a theater. It was a packed house and the whole crowd was laughing their asses off from the beginning to the end. Being in a big audience of people laughing just makes you laugh harder. It's a great memory. I'm glad you enjoyed the show.
I was a kid at the time but I do remember National Lampoon movies being a big deal. Hot Shots Part Deux is my personal favorite.
The Hot Shots movies are both absolutely fantastic.

Yes and no. Everyone remembers the big ones, like Animal House and Vacation, but there were lots of other National Lampoon movies that flew under the radar, such as Class Reunion.

I think it's actually really difficult to do this kind of comedy well - to be able to just throw absurd joke after absurd joke at the audience without any space to breathe AND it's actually funny? its probably my favorite style of comedy, being adhd 😂

The best part of Leslie does everything with a straight face
Leslie was an amazing actor with brilliant comedic ability. He carried a noise maker that made fart noises and would be serious during interviews while those noises would just be happening and he would give like no reaction. Made interviews hilarious
That driving instructor, was Oscar winning actor Ray Milland.

These films are sooo good. Absolute classics. I'm from Britain and remember these being classics from the get go, Leslie Nielson's comedy work was loved here full stop. Airplane, dead and loving it, naked gun. Man's a leg.
Omg I have watched this film hundreds of times and thought I have caught every joke and gag. Can't believe I have never noticed them just throwing all the luggage out of the plane lol. Thanks for pointing that out!
I think maybe my favorite moment from this movie (at least one I go back to from time to time) is when Frank is trying to extend the baseball game. He tosses a bunch of balls into the air to confuse the catcher who then makes the most obvious out of all time and Frank yells "safe". The reaction of the catcher is priceless. He was so mad.
Was a huge hit, comedy fans loved it. Not only did it make money at the box office, but people rented these movies from Blockbuster whenever they wanted a laugh and they were in constant rotation on cable TV.
I saw as a junior in high school with my girlfriend. I laughed my tail off and she didn't laugh once. Not even the floating chalk outline of OJ got her to crack a smile. Our days were numbered 🤣

You should also do the “Hot Shots” movies with Charlie Sheen. Same type of comedy but they parody Top Gun, then Rambo in the 2nd movie… or part deux!
Hot shots was another suggestion. Also National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1. Samuel L. Jackson is hilarious in that film.
You should check out some Pink Panther, Peter Sellers was a comedic genius. This is one series where I actually don’t recommend starting with the first one, it took them a few movies to perfect the formula, The Return of the Pink Panther would be my recommendation.
This was back when you could make a comedy and you never had to apologize for your art. Good times.

This and Airplane were the hardest I had laughed at in a while. I miss the "sophisticated slapstick". I remember Family guy parodying that opening with Stewie.
Exactly and that's a great way to describe it. It is slapstick comedy and the younger audience will laugh but the sophistication is definitely for the older audience. Laughing at platoon lmmaaaaaaoooooo
The 4rth wall break where he walks around the set instead of going through the door is one of my favorite bits in the film. I'm so glad you noticed it, cause so many people I've watched this film with never notice that it's a bit. They love to have scenes where there's something going on with people talking about something and then they do something that doesn't get pointed out as a joke and it's harder to notice them until you watch it multiple times. You picked up on the luggage gag and I didn't even notice it the first couple of times I watched this when I was younger. I love these movies for those bits.
Had such a great time watching your reaction. It had been so long since I had seen this movie and I was laughing hysterically along with you. My dad said when this movie came out, it got huge publicity after its initial release. After some people saw it, word got out and it was a must see. Once a again had a great time watching the reaction.

The comedy of Airplane, Naked Gun, and Clue works because instead of building the story with a comedic premise. They just take the most boring, generic-ass story, and build off of the tropes. It gives us a groundwork of a story we all know (disaster movie, police procedural, murder mystery), so it doesn't have to waste any time setting up the narrative before it stretches it into absurdity.
Hell, Airplane! is a plot for plot remake of Zero Hour!, just with jokes.
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but Weird Al would take women on dates to see this movie, and wear the exact same shirt as he did in the movie but not mention it just to see the reaction
I loved the series "Police Squad" when it originally aired on ABC and was SOOOO excited when this movie came out - and I was not disappointed😂 The sequel Naked Gun 2 1/2 is definitely worth reacting to as well. Love ya buddy ☮❤
This film was a huge hit and man, the crowd when I saw it was in absolute stitches! The toughest thing for me was I saw it with my Dad and I absolutely couldn't laugh at some of the jokes in that film beside of him! It was painful! Lol

these movies. Naked gun, aeroplane, police academy, they are just those types of movies u need to watch MANY times to see all those funny things BEHIND those actual scenes.

I don't think you should worry about OJ being in this, "death of the author" and all that.
You do get to see him get hurt a lot, though, which is nice.

Good video, as always, James. I was a kid when this movie came out and the 80's was a great time for cinema. This movie, like many great 80's, were the norm. I was so used to good movies: Comedy, Action, Horror, and Drama and this is what I enjoy. I'm one of those 'back in my day' guys. I don't try to be, it's just the stuff of today is from another style that doesn't hit me. I like your commentary and I appreciate younger guys who deliver good content. There's funnier gags in the movie, but "Hey, it's Enrico Palazzo!" makes me laugh so effing hard.
Saw this in the theaters when I was 9 and it easily shaped my love of comedy. I recall most adults thinking it was just "okay" after they had the luxury of seeing both Airplane flicks and Top Secret
I remember watching this again and my patents started watching during the date scene and were wondering who sang the song. I was waiting and then when it ended and the credits came up, we all busted out laughing 😆 great video! Keep up the great work!

The Airplane, Naked Gun and Hot Shots movies were really popular here in Ireland when they were released. I watched them when I was a teenager.

I saw this film in the cinema as a little girl. It was a huge deal, marketing, OJ, sequels... the works! It was a force.
Naked Gun was a bit of a cultural phenomenon when it released spawning endless memes around the country
The way the hypnotized baseball player assassin walked so slowly was a reference to how RoboCop moved.
It was the era of actually good, well-written spoofs.

This, Airplane!, and Top Secret I remember as being the first movies to hurt me with laughter. Like about to have an asthma attack and die from laughter.

Saw this in the theater when I was in high school. The crowd was rolling with laughter so much it was almost painful after it was over. It was so much fun! Watched this with my son when he was the same age I was in '88. Tears in both of our eyes because we were laughing so much as wild-eyed Frank Drebin crashes into the woman's window from the ledge and stumbles towards her with a concrete Johnson!
It was a few years until There's Something About Mary came out when I was able to have a similar crowd experience!
I think I was in Middle School when this movie came out. My parents just started letting us kids watch mainstream movies and this is one of the first they let me watch. Just hilarious and surprisingly clean for those that don't like too much PG-13 or above. Of course these movies were hiped and they deserved it. It was awesome going to the theatre back then. Just a totally different experience. It was an experience. The world was different back then though. There is no more levity.
It was huge in the theaters. Had two sequels. It was also based on a short-lived TV show called Police Squad. Some of the bits were taken from that.

This movie trilogy was based on a TV show called Police Squad that only aired 6 episodes then it was canceled. Leslie Nielsen unfortunately passed away in 2013 from phenomenon. He was my comedic idol. True Deadpan humor. R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen.
To this day, when I'm on here watching various reviews or send-ups, if the movie in question turns out to have Leslie Nielsen in it (such as some schlock film he was in during his slump in the early 70s), I will always post: "Hey! It's Enrico Palazzo!"
Loved the 'Police Squad' TV series when it was originally broadcast and was so unhappy when it was cancelled after one short season and then the film came along, I loved it, 'Naked Gun 2' is a good watch also... RIP Leslie Nielson...
the trilogy Naked Gun was made before OJ Simpson's trial of the century... fun fact is the actress Susan Beaubian who plays OJ's character's wife also plays the jury foreperson in American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson!

This movie was very popular as far as comedies go. When this came out I don't think anyone expected a second or third, but they're so damn funny. I hope you watch all of them.
The Naked Gun is a follow up to the very popular but short lived "Police Squad" TV show. Yes, they made a TV show that was this style of jam packed humor episode after episode. So this movie had a large audience even before it was released.

This is where my humor comes from. Lines from this movie, Airplane, Kentucky Fried Movie (which you should really watch next), and a little bit of Spaceballs find their way into everyday speech for me. Which nobody ever gets

It was solid enough to spark two sequels. Anyone who watched the short-lived Police Squad show loved it. Anyone who loved the Airplane! franchise loved it. Anyone like myself who was 13 years old loved it.
So, at the time.. there had been a TV series called "Police Squad" and "The Naked Gun" is technically a film follow-up to that series.
People knew what they were getting into and loved it.
The level of cheesiness cannot be reached by modern movie and i dont know why. These old things are truly a gem

Leslie Nielsen who plays Frank Drebin had always until airplane and naked gun, played in very serious movies and drama. His stint in Airplane made some producer interested in casting him in more comedic roles and it paid off. He was a very funny person and doing comedy was like a dream for him. It even revived his career. A great Canadian actor.
I saw this in the theaters, and it was very popular. It made an impact on pop culture at the time for sure. Maybe not as much as say Wayne's World did, but it was pretty big.
I just literally recovered a sealed VHS of this movie from my late Grandparents' movie library after searching through my library the other day! Too bad it's only worth $3.33 sealed... which is ironic, considering what the name of the 3rd film is... 33-1/3! Don't forget to watch the Naked Gun sequels and "Airplane II: The Sequel!". You'll be in stitches from them all!
The Naked Gun movies were originally a television show (ABC?) called "Police Squad" (hence the opening credits, "from the files of Police Squad"). It was not on too long, but all the episodes are great. The driving instructor was the great English actor, John Houseman, who had a long, distinguished career on stage and film.
We loved it. There was the naked gun tv show as well and airplane got us ready for it. And seeing OJ do goofy stuff was great because he was supposed to be a serious football player.
I must have watched this film forty times over the years. I saw it in the cinema and the audience was literally crying laughing. Every time I see it I spot something I missed or had forgotten about. The car chase with Stephanie left me literally crying laughing. The great actor John Houseman, in his final role, played the man in the car with Stephanie. He was close to Orson Welles and involved in Citizen Kane. He played the role in this film to perfection.
The film got rave reviews when it came out. Leslie Nielsen was a total genius in it - and before Airplane he was just a talented straight actor. The other two Naked Gun films are also superb - not as good, but they have scenes in them that left me in tears laughing. This film is one of those so good and so unique (albeit based on the model of Airplane) that it won't get forgotten. There will be people fifty years from now looking back at it the way we look back at Some Like it Hot or the best films of Laurel and Hardy. Generations will get the humour and roar laughing. It is a comic masterpiece of cinema.
