This was great, man! I just started picking and bought a box of 1100's off ebay, and the security pins were giving me a really hard time. Seeing the gutting helped me out a lot and now I can picture the innards and read the clicks much more clearly.
I have the same model that I've been trying to pick for 2 weeks now.I see why I haven't been able, Serated driver and key pins. Thanks a lot keep picking
i appreciate the info on spools over short key pins, when i get some time to get back at practicing and re-pin the bible of my practice locks i will keep that in mind. take care, be safe and stay well
Thank you for checking it out! As American Locks come from factory I am certain that they are pinned at random and it is always a good idea to check them for optimization :)
I’m surprised it took you a month, I bought 20 1100 American locks from eBay keyed different and was able to pick them all open the same day with no prior picking experience. I think what helped was the fact that they were new locks. Other than that congrats on your open and keep going!!
I don't believe it. I just got my first open on an American 1100 after watching your video. And simply the advice working from the back to the front since pin 5 is serrated had to be where i was going wrong. I knew pin5 was serrated because I saw LPL's video taking one apart. I used a .050 Covert Instruments tension tool in the top of the keyway and an ancient Southord hook from my first pick set I've had forever, well since around 2005. It actually scared me when it popped open because i had just started working on it! lol. Man. I was actually having a crappy day. Thank you for helping to turn it around! Subscribed! Edit: I just opened it a second time! Confirmed, Not a fluke!
Great video showing how to pick and gut these cool locks!!!! Thank you for the Brass Shackles and Challenge lock for Suki!!!! Stay safe my friend 🐾🐈🐾🐈😷
EXCELLENT !! Your best video yet. Perfect angles and always focused. And an excellent job picking all those security pins. Very good explanations of everything, and I learned something about how pin length affects security pins. BTW: love that pinning tray. Is it from locklab?
@@HelpfulLockPicker I just ordered one...along with some other interesting stuff. I found it on lockpickshop through a link on locklab site. Best pinning tray I have seen. I like that it accommodates 7 pins, has separate slots for keypin driver spring and wafer. The design of the plug holders allow you to keep the key in them, this makes it easy to repin the plug to a key inserted in it. And a nice big deep section for other parts so you don't spill them. It's perfect. I've been looking for a tray like this for a while, thought I was going to have to get a piece of wood and make it myself with a router.
@@HelpfulLockPicker I've needed one forever...all I have now is the tiny rubber ones sparrows make, and they are wsy too small and if you bump it or your desk/bench everything goes flying.
My favorite locks! There only 9 bucks on allpadlocks.com you can even pick the shackle height! They have 8 colors so I order all 8 in each series at a time!
@@HelpfulLockPicker I don't know but there cheap enough so if he ordered enough of them it would still be worth it. Honestly I didn't even think about it cause when I leave comments I don't even think about the other person living in another country
I remember dumping my very first 1100 and did not know why it happened. I think I'm still missing a few bits for it, but I picked up an American pinning kit so I should get it back together 😃
Yeah, it is very common. I am glad you are able to get it back together. My first gutting did not go perfectly well either. I didn't have the correct follower.
Hi. First of all great picking on a cool lock. I'm interested in getting a vice for picking but my budget is limited. Are the amtech suction ones any good?
@@HelpfulLockPicker I have 2 of them and they're both difficult. I spent 3 hours on the other one, but got nowhere. I'll spray some lubricant inside to see if that helps.
Same here man. I can’t seem to understand the serrated key pins. Idk if that’s what’s messing me up or what. I have 3 and I’ve only picked one twice (second time only took a couple minutes after the first time) but no luck since then. Starting to get irritating.

Thank you for the kind words. I am glad this helps. American Locks are some of my favorite locks to pick
I wish you would have posted this before I did my last two videos. I completely buggered gutting the first american 700 series I ever tried.
Fortunately we learn from every mistake and continually get better :-)
That’s my first lock I picked... so fun to take apart.
Thanks for checking it out! They are a ton of fun 😀
@NiTPicker I use a generic brand horizontal tripod
These skills have helped save jobs at the mill when guys on the previous shift have went home and left their locks on breakers to lockout equipment. 😁

Great video! Thank you for sharing. Picked my first 1100 today right out of the box and even ordered a second one! What a great and challenging lock!
Congrats on the open!

Great video! I’ve learned a lot from your content. How about a video on how to put an American Lock back together.
I can't remember if I did that but I still haven't put this one back so maybe I can film it

you are welcome :-)
Thanks for sharing! Nice work 👍🏻 What kind of vise do you have?
Also the american Lishi works great!!!
I enjoy how it auto sets an 8
5:04- would have saved me a massive headache on my pick and gut video. Also, Paclock cores are the same.
Thanks for sharing
Nice job my friend!
Thank you for checking it out!
Great video. Nicely done and explained. Enjoyed it. Take care and have a great day. 👍🙂
thank you for the kind words and I'm glad it helped :-)
What vise are you using?
Great video, excellent explanations and visuals.

Hi can you show how to open a best mortise double core and rekey it
I don't work with SFIC or have the tools :(
i gotta get me some american 1100s, they look fun!
It is a fun lock to work on

Anyone know if the *same kind of security pins are in the same spot in every 1100?*
Another very informative video, thanks

Very nicely done My friend, i like Picking american locks but only have a handfull so far :)

I honestly have never used one but the one sold by Harbor Freight is a popular choice
I still have trouble picking American Locks.
Fairly reminiscent of my 1100
Thanks for checking it out!
I am relatively new and I’m struggling to get this open
Thank you for sharing. Once you get good at these it is a very satisfying milestone. They are not easy
what are the two holes in the side of the padlock for? nobody ever talks about them?
Probably the drain holes for if it is outside
Im happy you mess up dude. Lawyer literally doesn't and its not human lol
Thanks, we all do but it is best to not hide our mistakes
I've only been able to pick my gold American Lock 1100 series 1 time and it took me 3 hours straight. No luck again yet though.
Some are harder than others, try another one and see if you have better luck. Also, spraying some lubricant in can help

over my head
Thanks for trying
Why would you ever pick a lock like this ? A pair of bolt cutters takes about 2 seconds and cost is cheap to replace.
This is a hobby and the focus is not trying to open locks we don't have access to
