    Little history note for everyone: this film was made on a cheap Budget. It was made a few years after 2001 and Kubrick purposefully had a tiny budget to prove he can still make good movies without a crazy budget (at the time 2001 had one of the biggest budgets ever )

    I'm all for very detailed reviews and opinions like yours Jeff, but I feel there is an excessive trend on focusing on grain and details where reviewers are really going into the wild territory of assuming how things "should" always look lately. As a VFX artist I can tell you grain can absolutely vary from shot to shot and unless you would be doing a 1:1 comparison with a DCP or actual negative screening, you are in a subjective territory my friend because of the simple fact we don't know how very much different things look to the original material. Just my two cents on that, and goes for every other reviewer who likes to excessively focus on this topic lately to make it sound like almost a mediocre release when it is not (TGTBTU). Regarding bit rate, sure, it is not the highest but that very well might not even have a huge difference considering the nature of the source to make it so incredibly relevant. Could it be better, sure but it's the same thing...discouraging people to buy it because your computer says it is inferior bit rate and be preconceived to think it could have looked THAT much better is a bigger mistake than the bit rate itself missing in my opinion. Live a little ya'll, enjoy your purchase a little more we are literally splitting hairs here. A Clockwork Orange looks GREAT!

      I noticed the image on the 4K release was stable compared to the normal Blu-ray. For example at 29:20 when Alex walks down the stairs, if you focus on the window you can see a lot of frame wobble compared to the 4K version which is completely solid.

    A Clockwork Orange had a small budget which played into the equipment that was used in production. Also a lot of the film was shot in various locations restricting the amount of control you can have on the lighting. When comparing to "The Shining" just remember that it had a far superior budget. As well as the fact that the whole film was shot on a stage, where kubrick could frame the picture in any which way he wanted.

      @chrisjfox8715 2 года назад +1

      @@jonathannoble9465 if you're talking about the dreaminess of EWS' look then sure but that's different than CO's outright muddy print/focus issues. I'm pretty sure what'll settle what I'm referring to is when Mulholland Drive comes out on 4k in November - it has a similar dream-like quality to its cinematography too. But that's where masterful control over the transfer comes in: getting the 4k image to sharpen edges yet not sacrifice the inherent subtly dreamy look of the film. Much of both EWS and MD's dream-like cinematography comes from the subtle glow of its lighting and haziness of the contrast...scenes where you don't necessarily want deeper blacks just more refined detail in the relatively bright shadows, and little to no noise reduction to let their grain structure shine.

    With the codec that UHD uses (h.265), it's usually compressed at variable bitrate. One movie or scene might have a lower bitrate if the frame has less colors or dynamic range. So as far as picture quality, I normally point to film source and the master restoration.

    • @JeffRauseo
      @JeffRauseo  2 года назад

      Totally variable on this too. But always between 45-50

    • @dsr0116
      @dsr0116 2 года назад

      @@JeffRauseo 45-55 Mbps is considered a standard UHD rate. I'm a Kubrick fan, and notice his movies can be inconsistant when it comes to film stock/cinematography. These are important factors for resolving power and dynamic range with a particular film. I'm looking forward to Barry Lyndon in 4K, since it has unique cinematography.

    Do you think they'll do a Kubrick 4k set part 2 (Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, Clockwork Orange) or release a new complete set which contains the three previous releases (2001, Shinning, Full Metal Jacket)?

    • @andresvergara3095
      @andresvergara3095 2 года назад

      Clockwork Orange will probably go in a WBs box set eventually. Spartacus (Universal) and Dr. Strangelove (Columbia) will likely be on their own. However, if Barry Lyndon happens in Criterion though, chances of a new 4K set might be delayed or get more complicated IMO.

    Got the steelbook here in seeden. Looks the same as BB:s but is a european release.
    Limited ddition it says.
    Bitrate is important when there is alot of information changing in the images. I agree it is a bit too low since a grainy movie needs that extra bitrate kick to look as good as can be.
    Love this movie. There might be re-releases and remasterings coming. Has happened before.

    Funny you mentioned that you've paid more attention to bitrate lately. I have too and noticed that 2001 and The Shining got 100GB discs, while Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange got 66GB. Maybe because they're shorter movies. Having said that, it's odd that Full Metal Jacket looks so good (including grain), but A Clockwork Orange doesn't. Maybe it's a source issue? Hopefully it's not because Warner didn't invest the time and effort.

      Kubrick used different cameras in different scenes, so thats why some shots look great and others look really grainy and blurry.

    Best Buy's release for the regular and steel book has been a fiasco. I checked daily for weeks leading up to pre-order it, and never had any luck. Then the day of it was immediately sold out. I visited two stores the first hour they were open and neither had either version in stock (though they did have spaces allotted for them). I continued checking online today and somehow was finally able to snag a steel book. It seems to come and go on the site, so keep checking if you're trying to get a steel book.

      Same thing happened to me today on the best buy app! Although both in store pickup and delivery said unavailable but I decided to try to check out anyways for the delivery just for a hail Mary attempt and it allowed me to checkout regardless. So I'm really hoping I don't get screwed here and that the steelbook doesn't arrive damaged! This would be my first steel order from them online, I ordered American psycho steel but that's not coming till Oct. Do they usually arrive in mint condition?

    Question to AV people. What does "grain didn't resolve" mean exactly? I know what grain is, and as a lover of older films I don't mind heavy grain if its appropriate to the source (eg. Altman or Cassavetes). Did I also hear him say the colours didn't resolve? Is it just about the clarity of the digital transfer? (Non-native speaker here.)

  • @Ishai1

    Like you said, it's an upgrade over previous transfers and the source is what it is.
    The expectations, and review, should be based on that.
    Not every movie is going to be reference quality even in 4K releases, just like not every Blu Ray or DVD was in the past.
    This movie won't be the one you pull out to show off 4K on your big screen but it's probably better that way because it's really not for everyone.

    The film had a gritty and, dare I say, cheap aesthetic. I rewatched the film a few years ago in 35mm and it is not a dynamic looking film. I’m very glad that the mono sound was included and even though I would wait for a sale or a decrease in price, mind you The Shining I was lucky to buy in a 2 for £30, but Full Metal Jacket has not gone down, nor did I see it in a sale.
