I read somewhere that Clockwork actually was intended to be Warner’s 2020 UHD release, but it was either taking more time than FMJ, or else 2021 is just a better anniversary year for it so FMJ is 2020 and Clockwork is 2021. Anyway, it’s coming!
As far as I know Kubrick shot Full Metal Jacket almost entirely or all of it in England, even the jungle scenes I believe are shot in build sets and not actually location. That's a big difference between this and Apocalypse Now which is almost entirely shot in the Philippines.
FMJ was shot in Cambridgeshire, on the Norfolk Broads, and at the former Millennium Mills, Beckton Gas Works, Newham (east London) and the Isle of Dogs.
Full Metal Jacket was shot not far from me ,well part of it was anyway at Bassingbourne Barricks for the training shots and the action scenes at Beckton Gas works in East London , no longer there now.
@@davidprice6994 Yeah I was pretty sure after Kubrick moved from Hollywood to the United Kingdom in the early 60s he almost never left the country. Pretty neat you're near a filming location for one of his films.

This is the most realistic depiction of USMC boot camp ever! GYSGT Ermey was originally hired as an advisor. When Kubrick saw him with the “recruits” he fired the original actor who played the senior Drill instructor.
Great review and very honest. I had the privilege of attending the UK premiere of this film with Stanley Kubrick with a Q&A afterwards. He was so shy. 😄

Linus Wärn I think part of the issue for UHD would be how the film was shot and how the primary lighting source is actual candlelight, so the Criterion 4K transfer on BD is probably the absolute best the film can look without altering it heavily to the point where it’s no longer the actual film anymore.
I think I heard a rumor that it’s coming out early 2021 but I don’t know how accurate that is. Clockwork orange and eyes wide shut are really the two major Kubrick ones that need a 4K release considering Barry Lyndon has a criterion
There are rumors they are doing a 4K clockwork orange for the 50th anniversary because 1 its the 50th anniversary and 2 the old blu ray came out on an anniversary as well
I appreciate your take on 4k releases. If you say its good I'm sure it is. That being said I would love to see more side by side screen shots. A picture is worth a million words on a 4k review. Especially since its so subjective.
I’m a Full Metal Jacket super fan. I have the entire first half of the movie memorized word for word, I’ve seen it (the first half) hundreds of times. I have the VHS, DVD, Digitally Remastered DVD, the Blu Ray, all of it. If I could camp out in front of Walmart to get the 4K I would!
OneBgBdArtemis Yeah, and on laserdisc. I found them on eBay a couple years back for around $10 I think. I keep planning on framing the laserdisc but haven’t yet
I am really eager to see Barry Lindon in both 4k and Dolby Atmos (or DTS:X). I hope we’ll get BOTH and not be disappointed. The soundtrack really deserves an object based upgrade.
Watch a lot of reviews only just found your channel have to say you are very in depth with the all round review, like that you look at the sound transfer as well. Most reviewers just concentrate on the scrip or affects only. Keep it up as I just subscribed to this channel so please keep the same style as your wicked at reviews chap. Exactly what I want in a review 💯
I saw this review and because of it, I did not buy it because I already have the Blu-ray. Instead, I rented this new 4k version on Apple TV for 4 bucks. I have to strongly disagree about the sound. Compared to the Blu-ray this is far better! Your comment about how you were going from speaker to speaker to make sure you were getting all the channels... that’s exactly what I was doing with the standard Blu-ray version, but I had no issue with this version. I hear all the channels perfectly and the explosions and sounds of war are Thunderous in my system! Even made me jump a few times! Way better! I agree that some of the scenes outdoors are not Always as detailed as one would expect (naturally) but much of it Is! It looks Beautiful! Sounds beautiful! I’m so glad I got a chance to preview it for myself because this release is far better visually and sonically than the Blu-ray. FAR better! As I was watching it I became more and more confused about this review. The upgrade is definitely not as Stunning as The Shining but it’s still fantastic and worth the upgrade. $25 is fair
The cover art resembles the style of the Shining release. I'm sensing an encouraging trend here and indications that Warner has plans for the rest of the Kubrick Collection.
Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket seems like an uncompleted film, but to me that's poetic justice to one of America's uncompleted wars. The film is harsh and doesn't turn a blind eye to the atrocities of Vietnam. Kubrick is the true master of atmosphere in film. He makes you feel like you are there. Friends of mine have commented that they only like the first half of the film and that the second half falls apart. I believe Kubrick sets up the first half to be an understandable reflection of the terror that would eventually enter the lives of these soldiers during war. It is easy to identify with being picked on because we all have in some way. Not all of us, on the other hand, have fought in war. Kubrick is the master. 4kmovies co
Don’t forget that a huge fave, Dr. Strangelove was also a 4K in the Columbia Classics box 👍. Yes, an older movie and also b&w lends itself to a better crispness (usually), but I still like keeping all Kubrick’s work in as excellent a quality as possible... Spartacus, anyone, hehe...
I went to Marine Corps boot camp 14 years ago and I never saw this movie. I think I finally watched it after 3 years in. It was definitely a spectacle. Also in the USMC, they're called Drill Instructors (DI). Drill Sergeants are the army's version.

FMJ is my favorite Vietnam War picture, and second would be Hamburger Hill -- which is under rated and not talked about nearly enough. It's a brutal, sad, realistic war film. Sort of reminds me of Hacksaw Ridge in its gritty intensity and emotion.

The only downside to Spartacus 4k is the movie is too long and gets a little boring at times. The restoration is mind blowing when you watch the featurette and they compare and show what they did
Nate Mekis I respect that but that’s just a personal feeling toward the movie itself. I think an epic is an epic and can be as long as it needs to be.
