Hi Venus, thank you for sharing this honest review on Toastmasters 😊🙏🌸 I've been thinking about this as well, especially since the last conference a few months ago. Personally, I also prefer a more heart based way of speaking and too much theatrics feels unnatural to me, even though some speeches are so awesome. To me, by joining Toastmasters I want to recover my own authentic voice. So far I've done two planned speeches, and I've realised how speeking from the heart really touches other people ❤️ and each person's voice had their unique precious essence that we can really appreciate
I agree 100%!!! I think it's good to combine it with some improv workshops, storytelling, open mic... there is more than one way to approach public speaking that's for sure!
The exaggerated theatrics are actually putting me off going to Toastmasters. With the fingers for point 1, 2, 3 holding up 3 fingers. So many superlatives! Can you believe it! So fascinating! But really, to gain some confidence and practice, it’s good.
Aware of, but not a member of Toastmasters. Constructive Criticism: Do you make an outlline of your subject matter so that you cover your subject in a throrugh, logical, and orderly manner? I ask because you seem to occasionally ramble around just a bit.Not so much as to put off those of us who so much enjoy your videos.
I rarely make lists. sometimes i do but then I can't read my writing. I just want to speak and for it to be easy. It's a learning process and that's why I do one-take videos. To practise and to share my Venusian philosophy. Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks. I'm a current member. Have been a member for 7 years over past 10. You nailed it. I used to think "that's the way to be.." ie the theatrics..then a penny dropped. The best connection happens through humanness and authenticity. Ps I'm the current president of my club which I never thought I would be = progress
Enjoyed your review, it felt honest and straight forward. I’m new to toastmasters and have been enjoying it. I feel there is room for both kind of speeches the ones that are from the heart and the more theatrical. I do agree not all speeches need to be theatrical
Thanks for sharing. I'm entering a speech content. I hate competing against my fellow toasties but I feel I have to help my club. Unfortunately, TM favours theatrics over authenticity if you look at the boxes that need to be filled on the judges ballot paper. Although it's far from perfect, it has helped me a lot.
What is Soho house? So that would be one thing I would suggest is if you talk about it tell us what it is, I bet everybody that hears you talk about you and working in Soho House wonders what is Soho house. I made that mistake on my first Icebreaker speech and gratefully someone did offer a tip and it helped me to not do something like that on the next speech to explain with detail or just a little bit more about certain ideas and concepts
I've been to their sessions before, and was impressed, though I couldn't sustain it due to work/family commitments. It seemed pretty accepting of people with different public speaking skills.

Great review of toastmasters Venus.
I too felt the natural delivery of a heart felt message should trump the theatrical, mechanical planned speech

thanks for sharing your perspective. Glad I'm not the only one :-)

Beautiful eyes
This is a great review, very informative. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Are you still In toastmasters? How is the Tedtalk coming along?
Thanks for your comment. Yes, I'm still in Toastmasters. No plans for TED so far but I'm doing a lot of professional speaking gigs.
Wow! Thanks so much for your insights! Aiming to go for the natural approach as well.
glad you think so and glad I'm not the only one who favours the natural approach compared to Toastmasters theatrics

Yes, it's a great way to improve.
Hi Venus you need to update the pricing as the fees have gone up. You spoke very well.
thanks so much, yes they have gone up but it's still good value for what you get I think.
Highly appreciative for your words love. Thank you.
