- The four deadliest boat fires and explosions are featured in this episode of Learn Something New™ from NFPA Journal®.
On September 2, 2019, a dive boat fire killed 34 people off the coast of California. Sadly, it joins a long list of other catastrophic, deadly blazes on marine vessels, including passenger steamboats and ferries, and military vessels. In fact, four of the 21 deadliest fires or explosions in the history of the world occurred on boats.
NFPA® takes a closer look at four of these terrible disasters in New York, Memphis, Nova Scotia, and Huangpu River, China.

This is gonna be a great series!
Great video. In the Coast Guard we have specialized fire training specifically for ships. Usually taught by land based firefighters they always comment how difficult ship fires are. Every entry is confined, and usually your secondary exit is too small for SCBA. Tough but the recertifications are frequent now
Glad you liked the video, Brad! The current cover story of our membership magazine, NFPA Journal, highlights the challenges of fighting shipboard fires. Check it out here: www.nfpa.org/News-and-Research/Publications-and-media/NFPA-Journal/2019/September-October-2019/Features/Marine
Flattened within a one mile radius? Damn.
Great series; but the “typing” sound can be irritating!

A (BOAT) is what rescues you, a (SHIP) is what you cruise on
Please get the terminology correct.
My uncle's 16 ft. outboard motorboat went on fire. It was just Uncle Wayne and his partner on board, and they were only about 20 yds. from the dock, so they jumped overboard and swam to safety. I don't recall what caused the fire, but the boat was pretty much unsalvageable.
On December 20, 1987, the MV Doña Paz sank, taking with it the lives of over 4,000 passengers. It is still the worst maritime disaster in Asia. Just before midnight of December 20, 1987, the passengers of the MV Doña Paz were confronted with a choice: to die by drowning or to die by burning. Philippines disasater
So the last of your deadliest boat fires sounded like an explosion and then sinking. Where was the fire that you never mentioned? The typewriter sound is a bit childish and annoying.
