- The short answer is yes, it is real. From nacho chips igniting to oily rags bursting into flames, there are several recent examples of seemingly spontaneous combustion. Whether spontaneous human combustion is real, however, is an entirely different question-and many people think the answer is no. In this episode of Learn Something New™ by NFPA Journal®, we examine the curious phenomenon of spontaneous combustion, and explain why this spring cleaning season you'll want to be careful when disposing of any oily rags.

Please note: I believe linseed oil and even OLIVE oil can do this! Also, if it's flammable when wet, it will still catch more easily and burn more toxic, I think, when dry.
