my son (college accounting major) used the 7420 the past few years and needs a new laptop. I am thinking about going with the 5440 for the new one as it is significantly more affordable. Do you think the "downgrade" would be noticeable for a college kid taking business classes?

"College kid taking business classes" From that point of view not sure if there will be any noticeable performance difference going from gen11 to gen13, unless some gaming, CAD or very light photo-video editing needs to happen. 7420 should last 6-8 years no problem I would not replace it yet. If you are going to replace it anyway and have a smaller budget, I would go to the official Dell refurbished outlet and get a 7440 for $1000 with a full Dell warranty on it.Hope this helps!

Definitely a solid laptop. One thing you missed about the Latitude 5440 is that the RAM is upgradable. The Dell Latitude 7440 and 9440 you can not update the RAM.
Also, the Dell Latitude 7440 and 9440 have higher base model display resolution. 5440 has 1080p, 7440 has 1200p, and the 9440 has 1660p.

I was not aware that the 7440 was not upgradable although that makes more sense for the 9440, and certainly the 7440/9440 can have higher res. Thanks for the watch and the comment :)
