Mattias IA Eklundh - Terra Incognita (feat. B.C. Manjunath and Yogev Gabay)

  • Terra Incognita. The middle section of this tune is among the hardest things I have ever played. An utter tuplet inferno. The (wonderfully insane) rhythm derives from a structure my astounding friend B.C. Manjunath could only come up with it and it blew my mind completely. I simply had to compose a Freak Guitar Camp tune around it, basically to face my fear and share the sweet terror with the innocent campers.
    To help the lovely Freak Guitar Camp participants fathom what the heck is going on, my other incredible friend and sidekick Yogev Gabay made a video for them with his amazingly clever marker pen way to explain tricky rhythms.
    It's really (an understatement if there ever was one) hard to keep the quarter note pulse through this, or as Manjunath himself puts it: "tough cookie".

    I can't understand (well in reality I understand perfectly) why Mattias is not recognized as one of the greatest of all time: no matters what he plays, I always find it enjoyable, musical and inspiring. To me a musical treasure.

      It doesn't matter what the culture thinks. We all know what's up. And IA doesn't care either. It's bigger than recognition man. Just be happy you're in the >1% of the earths population that gets to hear this sh*t

      Also, music is music. It's the one aspect of existence that doesn't need competition or comparison. There's no "best". Just let it tether you to the present moment :)

      @@jkol323 yep, no competition: it’s art, not a race. I just fell that IA deserves more recognition.

      Well, he is recognized, just not well known. I personally think he's at level of Gilbert and Govan. But he definitely should do some collabs and that freaky stuff he did (ruclips.net/video/Vxq0xvSJojw/видео.html)

      @@GilCloudyou always hear about those big names but I think you'll find the concept of the "musician's favorite musician" throughout. Mattias is an example of being great at music for your own sake and for sharing the knowledge with others. In my mind, Mattias is the ultimate music academic that I try to emulate in my scientific career. Science is fun and cool, it's made to be shared just like art because art is science and science is art.

    Great to see Yogev Gabay too, he has taken a different kind of approach to teaching Konnakol. Learned fun stuff about Meshuggah and Porcupine Tree from him. Nice song too, feels like a change of pace yet again.

    kttk(trkttk) = Ki Ta Ta Ka (Te Ri Ki Ta Ta Ka)? I think I'm close on the pronunciation, went down to 25% speed to try and decipher. Also looked up a tabla video for help with the syllables... but I realized I had already seen something similar in a Yogev video.

    • @pendiculator
      @pendiculator 9 месяцев назад

      You are correct Kttk(trkttk)X2 is indeed Yogev's shorthand notation for KitaTakaTariKitaTakaTariKitaTaka.
      I suspect "Te" might be a tabla specific sound and I do not think BC Manjunath would necessarily use it here. But I might well be wrong and ultimately it does not matter too much.

    Alright you have certainly charted much of what you are playing. Why wouldn’t you? Composing with different layers and keeping it interesting in your formulaic ways. The first video of yours I watched and listened to a couple days ago, introduced me to your counting/timing, time signature method. Is this a form of a standard European/Scandinavian method of counting/timing/time signatures, or your own method? Not familiar with until now, but zi like it, and it makes complete sense. It does, however, remind me of the tonguing-exercises I did when I played trumpet for many years.
    Anyhow, some people are just players and composers. Within the fret board there are clusters of combinations of notes, that I think basically break down to mathematics when playing. Same could and can be said about timing. When I feel and hear something long and progressive or symphonic live, I usually can feel where it is going. I have always had that gift whether it is complex and changing time signatures, or time signatures that make no sense to the Western world like Okinawa folk music, or traditional Korean music. Some of those people are astounded that I, I Westerner can follow along and get into these types of songs, and unconventional tempos and time signatures. It is something you are either born with or not. This musical feelings and being able to multi-task, but basically it breaks down really not just music theory, but music formulas and math. My favorite songs are songs that take me on a journey, and bring me back. That is the way anything but pop music should be. Well certainly there are many more types and styles of music that takes you literally no where/filler. Not everyone understands and can appreciate complicated music. I believe some of us just happen to be brighter than others when it comes to formulas and feelings inside and composing some forms of complex, but rhythmatic timings of the Universe, that is built into our DNA.
    Cheers, Matthias, performer, composer, producer and sharer of knowledge.

    Бессмыслица с громким названием. Конструктор в стиле "а можешь в такой ритмике?" Где композ и в чём идея? А что со звуком слабых долей? Вместо "малого барабана" можно насладится 6 минутами звука мухобойки когда промазал по мухиной авиации. Хочу полноценные барабаны, тем более что они есть на фоне.
