This is just beautiful. Sterling talking about his journey through grief and self discovery really resonates with me. Thanks for sharing! Definitely gonna check out Join the Dance 🌊
I just made it to the second half of this episode. You guys do spiritual deep diving as well as you do the hilarious stuff. That was some really insightful conversation. Helped me as I’m going through some tough stuff. Thank you
When I lost my best friend of 21 years in 2020 I was in shock until like 3 months ago. We both lost our childhood best friends to illnesses before we found each other at a church camp and started surfing together around 11 12 yrs old. We always tested each other's physical and mental limits. I miss him dearly. It's corny but true : everyone dies , few live. As long as we are alive we have the choice to live with purpose or not .Prayers for the Jones Family ❤️🔥Thankyou Makala for showing us how to live and be present.
So beautiful to listen to your convo about healing during making your film. Hearing the bit about you learning from the birds while surfing and having this meditative experience reminded me of a book that you may like: Johnathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach
So I took too much acid when I was 17 went on a 3 week trip to la la land. Since that happened I've had 4 separate "flashbacks" that also last minimum 2 weeks without any drugs added. Its a wild manic state that we could call enlightenment if I had the guide to control my mind. Basically what I found is to isolate myself completely for minimum a week to shift out 5he bs narrative my mind would create with the people around me. So cool to hear a similar technique was used for yourself to get back to your true self. Our minds are a beautiful monster that can create a living hell if we dont take the time to sort it out once in a while. Love your openness bro. Not too mention 5he amazing stories you tell. Keep it rolling!!!
It's really effective when you do one half silly and the 2nd half poignant like you did with Andy in another episode. Really good stuff about mourning - when I lost my mom, I also isolated myself but unlike you, I didn't do it in a healthy way. Just smoked weed every day and cried and hid from the pain. I know the pain remains but you seem to have accepted the loss rather than resist it and gradually healed and learned about yourself in the process through surfing and aloneness. Love your visual eye, your stories, and your surfing.
This is easily my favorite podcast for laughs. I watch all the comedians pods and I've never surfed. Hard catching waves in Montana that don't consist of snow.
That's freaking insane, I always believe I was the only one analyzing the pelicans glide, there's 3 tips of feathers at the end of the wing and if glassy , the one in the front of the line barely dips this tips in to the surface , and remembered Mickey Dora , and Tom Curren finger tip glading on the surface, I learned this on a wed Dec 20 1992 in my first trip to witches Rock, kudos sterling Spencer, now I know I'm not in the spectrum in vane. Florida the new Sion.🤙🌊
That was a really good one boys. Thanks for opening up Spencer. I needed that. I think I’m about to do my 40 days and 40 nights. I’m a go watch the birds. Yeeeeeeee
Good one boys. i was watching on the phone in the livingroom and my friend walked in and sat down about halfway through and i didn't know they were even listening but when it was over they said "that was a good podcast".
Dudes I love watching you guys vibe of each other. When you were laughing at the 'Laird sweat sprinkler ' so funny. I was loosing it. Keep up the good energy guys. Much love from New Zealand
Sterling is like that one friend that’s funny as hell , but you can’t ever tell if he is joking or being super serious . But it doesn’t matter cause it’s super funny anyways . #STA #SoftTopsAnonymous
Wow, what an episode! Thank you so much for this one. “Join the Dance” has been one of my favorite films period for a while now. My friends and I watched it on a projector one night. Really beautiful work. The surf news rundown with clear glasses guy and the Kelly statue had me rolling. I had a crush on the goofy movie girl as well lol! The otters 🦦 man! Dylan es un campeón de Puerto Rico sí o sí 👍. Se venden camisetas de “World Sauna League?”
Kelly confiscated my merch shirt. Mentioned it was payback for a flyer? Awkward scene being shirtless in the Coco Golden Corral. His tan was looking good.
I’ve always been absolutely terrified of the endless incomprehensible depths of the ocean. But you guys talking about surfing and that lifestyle, it makes that dread a little less terrifying
The Ocean Racer by Chris Christenson of Christenson surfboards is such a cool board, it’s like a Simmons cut in half (probably why it’s called a mini Simmons actually)
I stumbled across a podcast hosted by Benji Weatherly of Pipe House / Momentum fame with Mike D. of the Beastie Boys. In the first 10 minutes they bring up Kalani, Jack Johnson, Kelly and some of his superpowers also the pitfalls of the white wet suit . Was thinking you might be able to find some funny material to repurpose. Anyway you guys have a funny thing here keep it up.
for real tho... I spent 5 years alone in the Sequioa Forest. That's where I found out who I was when no one else was around. Who I was and what I wanted... not what others wanted for me. Priceless.
I loved this fucking movie! Sterling, you are absolutely the most creative and funniest pro surfers ever! Although Brad Gerlach back in the day was pretty funny also. 🤘🍻
This podcast is the best thing to happen to the surf community in 25 years.
There’s a rumour that Kelly Slater’s hair didn’t fall out, but instead it left his head on purpose and found a new happier life as Sterling’s beard.
This is just beautiful. Sterling talking about his journey through grief and self discovery really resonates with me. Thanks for sharing! Definitely gonna check out Join the Dance 🌊
Dude this pod is so good😂 it’s awesome to have a local top dog killing it so hard in the pod game!

Sterling making sound effects to cable news might make it watchable. At least it would be funny.
