The Magic Johnson-Larry Bird rivalry single-handedly saved the NBA, a league which was dying a slow death by the late 70s. Magic and Larry were two of the best players in college basketball who finally faced each other for the first time in the 1979 national championship game, won by Magic's Michigan State team. They both went into the NBA as rookies that year...and the rest is history. Initially, they couldn't stand each other. Then, later in their careers, they started doing commercials together that played on their rivalry. Although they kept it quiet, doing these commercials together led to a very close friendship between the two that remains to this day. They ended their playing careers together as teammates on the 1992 US Men's Olympic Basketball team, known as "The Dream Team".

During Magic's rookie season, I was contracted to body guard for Magic during various autograph sessions at book stores and sporting goods store promotions. He was usually scheduled to appear for 2 hours at each one. Most were attended by thousands of people. Magic always remained until he met every one of his fans. Sometimes up to 5 hours. He is in the top 5 nicest people I've ever met.

The best point guard to ever play... As a 5 year old I still remember him faking out the cameraman every other game.

Magic is one of those players who will ALWAYS be legendary....the fact that his greatest rival at the time was Larry Bird only made BOTH of them that much greater.

in the '80s, we had seats in the senate section at the l.a. forum for every lakers season, and magic was a joy to watch. moreover, he was fun to listen to -- we were close enough to hear the teams talking trash to one another on the court as they played the game. magic was good-humored and funny, and he seemed to take particular pleasure in needling isiah thomas of the detroit pistons who was one of his closest friends off-court. the two of them kept up a patter throughout the game that kept us all in stitches.
the laker's winning streak won five championship seasons in the '80s, and magic consistently posted stats in the triple doubles, making it all look so easy. he was a generous player who obviously loved the game -- it was just a walk in the park for him, with that bright, gorgeous smile lighting up every corner. what a privilege it was to be there.

If you ever hear from folks 25 and under who say present day players (Minus a few) are better than him, they're wrong. This man is a GOAT in many aspects. He's one of the few who could thrive in any era of the game.

I am not a basketball fan but Magic Johnson made even me want to watch. he was amazing. His no look passes, his baby skyhooks and his shooting from downtown. He got everybody on their feet.

A winner, a champion, the greatest point guard of all time, played all 5 positions in the final as a rookie, charismatic, creator of showtime, etc etc etc
    Made basketball fun and exciting

I was thirteen when the Lakers got Magic and had been a Laker fan since the age of 6. My favorite player had been Norm Nixon, whom Magic replaced. Magic gave us 16 years of fun and joy. He gave us 5 titles. He's such a generous, joyful human being. He has also done much for improving my home town, Los Angeles. He is, hands down, the best point guard ever. I hate to say it, but this video doesn't do justice to the long career he had.

I don't have a specific video to recommend, but you should look into the evolution of the relationship between Magic and Bird, from mutual hatred to best friends while they saved the NBA.

Thank you for two awesome videos! I saw the National Championship that Frank Vincent's video covered. To see Magic vs. Bird from their college days and then the amazing careers as pros. Playing for the NBA title, so many times. Bird vs. Magic games were an event!

It's been close to 30 years and the man is still alive and doing well, which I don't think anyone would have predicted at the time. However, if any individual had all of the requisites to beat HIV, it's Magic Johnson. He was obviously in tremendous shape physically, had an incredibly positive outlook on life, a very supportive family (nobody would have blamed Cookie for leaving, but she didn't), and the financial resources to afford any cutting edge drug that could have helped him.

He was the greatest passer ever. Highest per game assist average in the history of the NBA. He was a 6-9 point guard who started at center in the NBA finals as a rookie, scored 42 points and was voted mvp of the series. At 20.
You can argue who was the greatest player ever, but point guard everyone knows .
He could pass over you but was still fast enough to run the greatest fast break offense in history.
his field vision was second to none . Bird was of course his funhouse mirror image. Magic was the passer who could shoot, Bird was the shooter who could pass.

Magic and Bird basically saved the NBA from failure in the because their games were on tape delay because no one cared about them. Their rivalry made a NBA game an event again. Magic is easily the best point guard to ever play, period.

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Simply no one more entertaining to watch play basketball. Magic moved around the court like a dancer. Always on rhythm and always in step. Michael Jordan was more athletic, Bird maybe more talent, but Magic bested them both in the shear beauty in the way he played the game and the fun you had watching. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

All you need to know- he went from winning a college championship to winning an NBA championship the next year, being the MVP of the finals as a rookie. No one has ever done that. A guard starting at center then scoring 42 points is unheard of. All this talk about the new guys- which of them started center and won a championship as a rookie? None.
