Quick question. If you're not going to use the "Bridge LAN interfaces into a single network" option, then what are the other ports on the device used for? Eth0 is for connecting your ISP so I'm confused what the other ports might be used for if they're not being used as switch ports.

I was looking at this to replace the poe5 that we generaly go with.. but it only has 24v PoE! why ubnt, why! If it atleast had 48 you could use 48-24 volt adaptors.. now that almost all ubnt ap's are 48 volt af this just makes it bad. Feel more like a edgerouter x sfp replacement then poe5. I saw that the beta device had 24/48 but ubnt removed it in the final product.

Absolutely FANTASTIC video (and full series)!!! Thank you so much for this amazingly helpful information. If you wouldn't mind, I have a question regarding the ETH 5 (SFP) port, and using an ISP's fiber handoff for the WAN connection. Centurylink fiber gigabit ethernet is now available in my area, and their equipment appears to be an ONT (fiber to RJ45) and an all-in one gateway / modem / router / WAP. Would the EdgeRouter 4's "eth5/SFP" (with the proper fiber module) be able to take the fiber from CenturyLink that would otherwise plug into the ONT, thereby eliminating the need for the ONT? My goal is to not use any of CenturyLink's equipment, and to use an EdgeRouter 4, a UniFi POE switch, and two UniFi APs. Thank you tremendously in advance!

    Hi Chris,
I've just purchased the ER-4 which was an upgrade to the USG. I am into gaming and the issue that i have is in regards to ping spikes or network variations or buffer bloat. I'm told QoS can fix this and i've attempted to set up the smart QoS without success. I also noticed that the "upload" and "Download" seem to be the wrong way around in the GUI which i tested with a speed test and the effect was opposite to what the settings suggested, an easy fix though... I'm wondering if there is something completely esle that im missing as im not an IT professional but pick things up somewhat at my own pace lol. love your videos upto date which got me started down this path!

Hey bro, I'm goign to follow the same path as you. I'm very new to the ubiquiti products and with what little research today I've found that I should use the edge router x or edge router 4 over the usg because of the larger throughput the 2 edge devices can support during smart qos due to their cpu power. How did you go setting up your qos for lagg free buffer bloat?

Dexter Fishbourne true, but again, it’s an ancient artifact that was abandoned in the early 90ties when we started doing CIDR. Also, class C is 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255. Some people call things outside of that also Class C, or call it Class C size. It’s just silly to keep using this old terminology. I don’t know why a lot of the literature keeps mentioning this, it’s been legacy for 25 years now. Just call things by their netmask size, in this case /24.

      That's a really picky criticism. :)

Thank you! Best review! I basically wanted a faster Edge Router X SFP -- I was able to get this by creating a bridge and assigning it to all 5 ports.

Hi Chris. A little help if poss. I have just bought an ER4 and currently have a Draytek Vigor 130 modem in bridge mode on 192.168.1.1
I have configured the ER4 to have an IP of 1.20 and a pool size from 1.38.
How do i configure the Ubiquite ER4 to allow me to access the modem to view stats etc?
    Thanks!

I just got an EdgeRouter 12! I’m watching this video to see how to set it up. I was originally going to buy the EdgeRouter 6P on Amazon, but when I looked at the price of the 6P and the 12 with POE, the 12 was cheaper than the 6P, so I figure I get the 12. Anyway watching this video for the EdgeRouter setup. As I’m converting my entire home system to Gigabit+ Network.

You mentioned turning frying a device if POE was enabled on the port for a non-POE device, but my understanding is this would only have with a passive POE injector, not a 802.3af compliant switch. Is this 802.3af compliant?

When you say layer 3 switching, I think you mean layer 2 switching!

Hello there. There IS Layer 3 switching, for sure (Switches with routing capabilities). Now get ready for this, there is ALSO Layer 4 switching (Amidst additional features, Layer 4 switches make packet-forwarding decisions based NOT ONLY on the MAC address and IP address [which is basically what a Layer 3 switch does] but also on the application to which a packet belongs...

@@AngelRArauz You are corrrect. However in this case the Router 4 is having to do Layer 2 switching as a router, so not strictly Layer 3 switching (e.g. it does not switch based on IP address).

@Crosstalk Solutions, I know the er-4 is beefier compared to the er-lite, but I'm curious which would be more cost effective for home use to replace a Google Fiber network box. I'm all for performance, but I'm not for overspending if the er-4 offers only a slight advantage.

Hey Chris, I just want clarity. Is the ER4 recommended to use with 2 AC Pros, and the remaining ports going into various rooms in the house? Or should we be using a switch for everything but the APs? I have about 50 plus connected devices in the house and I need something robust to manage it all.

Hello... I was wondering if you had a chance to try OpenVPN Client with a provider like TorGuard on both devices. I tried OpenVPN Client on my ER Lite a while back with Torgaurd so I can watch Hulu, Netflix etc... from Bermuda and the speed drops drastically; I have 20Mbps and it drops to 3Mbps. I found out the ER Lite doesn't have an Offloader for OpenVPN through other users on UBNT site. I use a Buffalo WZR-1750DHP with DD-WRT and I don't have this problem. Also, can you try OpenVPN Client with two other VLANS as well (three simultaneously). I really like the UI firmware of the router and want to use it with my Edgeswitch. Thanks for your time...
