Set this up for a client. 3 weeks ago. Gig symetrical. 70 users. 260 IPs. VoIP cells and laptops. Doesn't sweat. Less then 15% cpu constant

Are there any changes that you have to do within the ER device to accomodate the Gigabit speeds or just accomodates that high speed out the box with default configuration? Did you enable Hardware Offload?

Add Northwest Kansas to a place with PPPoE as well. Perhaps the largest provider in the area, Nex-tech started as Rural Telephone with dial-up, then moved to DSL/wireless before making the transition to fiber in many of these small rural towns and cities. Where they had DSL, they kept PPPoE. I even had one customer who was a DHCP hold-out and when their OTN failed, Nex-tech switched them over to PPPoE, presumably for consistency and manageability.

I’m in Cape Town, we use PPPoE primarily. I have gigabit symmetrical if you’re still looking to test. But it’s probably a lot slower going across the pond.

When I bridged my networks, my speed went from 940 mbps to 300 mbps. I recommend not doing that on gigabit connections as I've seen others having the same issue.

Thanks for this video. I wasn't setting it up first time.i deleted my eth 1-2 bridge and for some reason lost access to eth1 completely.
I reset and still couldn't get access, what was I doing wrong? I still had my lan plugged into eth1 and wan in eth0. I forgot we had to plug into eth0 to setup.
Love the er4, but certainly some fundamental changes from a general router for us limited knowledge types. Cheers!

What is the benefit of selecting "Bridge LAN interfaces into a single network" option? What are the drawbacks? (10:00 minute mark). In all the setup videos I see, people check it off and bridge ports Eth1 and 2. In forum posts people say to disable port Eth2 and only use Eth1 connected to a switch. No one exactly explains the reasons why though in a practical home or small business network environment. Can you please help? You seem very knowledgeable.

Congrats on Gigabit internet! I would give my kidney for symmetrical gigabit though, my upload varies between 1mbps and 30mbps, which causes tons of issues with QoS, etc. 7:59 Tons of PPPoE around here (Ontario, Canada) for FTTN (50/10 VDSL). 16:40 the reason why the speedtest went above 1gig is because your browser "paused" the fast.com tab when you switched to another tab messing up the results. You have to use two browser windows (or dual monitors) if you want to monitor the router status and run a true speedtest at the same time.

Thanks for this video. I wanted to go bare bones and configure it manually, but yikes. Now, in 2020 they ship with switch ports set to request DHCP so you just have to plug it in and either look up the new host in your DHCP server or scan for it.

I've been waiting to see someone with a gigabit connection, put PIA or similar on a Edgerouter and do some real world speed tests. I'm tempted to add an Edgerouter into the network so I can have a vpn option for other devices.

On the page for system settings, system gateway address field, and having a static IP provided by the ISP, is the address to be entered here supposed to be the one for the device itself (172.16.30.1) or the one provided by the ISP? It's not clear to me whether it's asking for the local or providers gateway.

I just got my ER4 a couple of days ago, upgrading from Lite. I didn't import the settings from my old but using a couple of CLI commands I was able to get reservations, UPnP2 and firewall settings to push in through Putty.
The reason I didn't migrate over was I wanted to use the SFP for my LAN (I know it doesn't matter but I had a few modules and 3' fiber laying around).
The ER4 is a beast for the price point. I am getting much better results than with the Lite or X and I was very happy with those.

    • @ligmabigfatballs7311

If you have a consumer router/switch combo, it probably has 3-4 ports. You can upgrade your router to one that has the number of ports you want to have wired connectivity in your house. For example, you might have 2 bedrooms and a living room. If you want want each bedroom to have 2 ports and your living room to have 4 ports, you would need a router with a WAN port + 8 Ethernet ports. Then you could run Ethernet cabling from your router's location to the rest of your house and install unmanaged/dumb switches to expand your network as needed.
