Recently bought a car which is a spitting image of yours on a 66 plate with 28k miles. Loving it so far, I've had an Audi S1 previously which i nearly went for again and have had a manual M140i since that too.
I have a Mk 7 Golf R amazing car, I had a rattle too, took ages to find but eventually it was coming from the pan-roof. occurred when in race mode and accelerating. Managed to reduce it with anti-rattle tape. Great Review and Content 👍
My friend has a 2014 R(mk7 I think), 500 odd bhp, went out in in yesterday, he did a launch and got 3.7 to 60mph(although he’s done less than 3 with perfect conditions) it was brutal and took my breath away 😮😂 But yeah his has the vibration, it just sounds like the dash vibrates for a few seconds at certain rpm, I thought it was because it was highly tuned, or something he’s done to it that caused it, apparently not then?
Having bought from new a 2016 golf r, to selling it 6 months later as I wanted a bmw m3…..3 bmw M3’s and the mark 8 r. I’m back to a 2018 golf r mk 7.5 3 dr with all the toys……and in the best colour. Limestone. The best car.
Definitely rides better on 18s , ive got some cadiz with crossclimate 2's i run october til april and some prets i run april til october with summer tyres and its very obvious as soon as the 18s are back on how much better the car corners and behaves on the road actually going to sell the prets now because of this!
Thank you for sharing your points on the wheel size! I love the look of the prets but I have to say I am happy with the Cadiz. It is a shame mine have blemishes but overall they have done a great job for me over the 6+ years 👍
I have also spent a lot of time with the TCRs and they are fantastic to drive. They are a bit more expensive than an equivalent Golf R and that's the main thing why I have stuck it out with the R for me.
Great video Sam, Totally agree with you on the manual gearbox. Knowing what I know now would of gone for the DSG. 1st - 2nd seems notchy when driving normally. Make sure when you have your Haldex service the garage take the pump out and clean the mesh filter on the end of the pump.
Thank you and I think I would have also gone DSG too. Yes I may actually take it to a specialist now away from VW to do the haldex as I had a great service with SCC Performance in St Albans when they sorted my thermostat housing 👍
ive always loved the look of these, the sleekness ect...recently Ive been given an opportunity to get a new car, ive got 10k there, about 2.5 in my EP3 and im looking to save some up and get a Golf R. Beautiful cars, I would like a dsg one....what MPG do you get in eco? my mates Golf R32 DSG felt amazing for just chilling and seemed like an excellent daily, i get the same sense from these...
I can recommend them and they are great for sure! I would say 15k would be the lowest I would spend on a MK7 Golf R in todays money. A DSG one would be a little more expensive. I can get around 40mpg but I tend not to push the car too much so realistically you would be getting around low to mid 30's 👍
@@SamAustin yeah that's what I'm looking at 15k...how much would you say for a DSG one sam? I can deal with that MPG. What's your insurance like? Did a quick GoCompare then and it's coming up 2k for the year, 1600 if I pay all in one.. I do work for Direct Line Auto Group but they refused me a quote lol. I get 50% off them.
Yessss more R content. You certainly have two lovely cars. I was super surprised you kept the golf after getting the focus. I wonder if selling both could get you into something special. I know the rs was your dream car tho.
Yes I have missed sharing R content but after 6 years of RUclips I wanted to mix things up a little with my other passion. The RS was my dream car and I am so happy I own it. I am not sure it will stay but I cant really see myself selling the R anytime soon.....unless it was for another R perhaps 🤔
What kind of comment is that, if he likes the car he bought himself, why can’t he have his opinion? I get pretty damn close to the local chip shop, because I love fish and chips, is that your problem? No it’s not 😂
@@boulevard14 “getting really close to cars”, I gather you mean he grows an attachment to cars? I was saying what’s wrong with that, and why is it a pet peeve for someone? Unless I’ve got you all wrong, and you meant something else?
Could the annoying rattle be the roof headlining Sam? My old Scirocco had a replacement shark fin aerial, and the garage prised away the headlining to replace it, after which an annoying rattle started. I solved it by stuffing some thick tape in the small gap to absorb the rattle. But great review, glad you are still loving your R!
I’ve had mk7 gti performance dsg, mk7.5 r dsg, mk8 r and just picked up a new rs3 saloon in November. I loved all of my golfs when I had them and wouldn’t say anything other than how amazing they are. Each one was a step up from the next. My gti was the first car I experienced with a bit of power and a sporty edge, the only thing I hated was the wheel hop lol. The 7.5r was my first experience of a proper powerful car and it was able to put the power down, it was so easy to drive. The mk8 r took it on a bit, especially with the rear diff making the car take corners like I couldn’t in the 7.5. The rs3 though is another level with the 5cyl sounds and power. It just keeps pulling way beyond the numbers where you felt the golf r’s begin to fade a bit😅 did I mention the 5cyl❤
I love your history of cars and I have kept my eye on the RS3's. The saloon also looks amazing! Many congrats on yours if i have not said so betore Gaz. The latest one might be a little out of my price range but a previous gen RS3 is worth thinking about. I recently tried a MK8 R 20 Years, video to come later today, and I was really impressed with it. They offer everything you need in a car as the platform works for performance as well as practicality which I find awesome 🙂
Glad to here you are still enjoying yours also! Yes I really need to unlock android auto with the dealer code. I've held off for 6 years but have found it useful in my Focus RS so would be great to have it in the R also 👍
Hello Sam, enjoyed your video. I’m actually looking to buy a Mk7 Golf R, I did own a Mk7 Golf GTi with the performance pack but always wished I’d bought the Golf R, I went from an Audi S3 to the GTi and even with the performance pack you noticed the difference between front wheel drive only and Quattro 4 wheel drive. My main question is have you ever experienced dynaudio in a VW? I love my music and have been looking for a car with that but I just wondered if there was much difference between the standard system and the dynaudio? Keep the videos coming for us normal folks who can’t afford Ferraris etc.
Thank you and many congrats on your S3. For sure the 4 wheel drive makes a huge difference in being able to apply all that power. I have experienced dynaudio and it is an incredible sound system on the car. Quite a hard option to find so you will have to seek it out but if you are a bit music lover I can 100% recommend it 🎵🙂
Had the choice of s3 8v rs3 8p golf r mk7 and audi ttrs had my heart set on a merlin purple s3 8v then it fell through so I bumped into a golf r mk7 with a lot of extras leathers dcc reverse camera pretoria maxton bodykit with ottenger spoiler reasonable service history only real issue was waterpump was leaking which i had fitted at a local audi and vw centre which were useless couldn't even bleed the the water system had issues for over 5 months with overheating so was on the verge of selling it then one evening me and the misses bleed the system our selfs and no issues since wouldn't be so bad if they didn't charge me £1.500 to do the job so no recommendations for them👎 but its an amazing point and squirt machine and it corner like its on rails had a race with a porsche taycan turbo and we were level most of the time considering car is stock 😂
I can see why you had your eyes on a merlin purple S3. Great car and a very rare colour. As for the water pump I had the same issue and I can recommend SCC Performance in St Albans as they did a great job sorting mine out around a year and 7 months ago. Many congrats on your 7R and I do love the Ottenger spoiler.....very rare OEM option 👍

My annoying rattle was on the rear view mirror. Only happens on those weird bumpy bits of the m25.

Genuinely a superb car. I’d keep your mk 7. Don’t mod it. The engineers knew their stuff on this platform

Try the passenger side hand grips above the doors for your rattles
I will give it a try. Thank you 👍
Golf Rs are great but I found the TCR much more fun. I’ve owned both and definitely the TCR is the one to go with if you have a choice.

You getting really close to cars is really my pet peeve.
Okay then......

It sounds like it is in the door card but could be the roof lining. Ill give it a bash and see if I can solve it 😅
