Many congrats on your order! The MK8 Golf R is cracking and the speed is unreal for a hatchback! I still prefer the infotainment and the manual gearbox engagement of my MK7 R personally but if you owned a DSG before I would say this is a great more like for like progression. It is a car on my list in the future for sure! The steering wheel enables you to drive the car with more of a race car stance (9 and 3) than the MK7's wheel and the seats are a great plus point too! You wont be disappointed but it is all personal preference to decide if it is any better than the MK7 R. For me it is in most areas but some parts of the 7 I still prefer but that maybe because I am so used to the car after 4 years now👍
@@SamAustin Thanks Sam. Keep the videos coming. Your hard work much appreciated on the channel. Thanks for the feed back. Look forward to future videos 👍🏻
Nice video Sam, good to see your enthusiasm. But i`m suprised about your complains of the price. In the UK this car is around 43.000 pound which is around 50.000 euro`s. Over here the basic car is 65.000 euro (56.500 pounds). A nice spec car will be at around 80.000 euro`s (around 69.000 pounds). So, i think you guys in de UK shouldn`t complain about the price...
Not too mention the average earnings are on the higher side VS most other areas. It really all comes down to purchasing power, which the UK has definitely an advantage on.
@@SamAustin thanks mate youve made the best review iv saw yet! As it was realistic and truthful im more excited now than ever, i have a mk7.5 at the moment and its being traded in when my mk 8 arrives
I have one on order in Texas and almost canceled based on comments from other reviewers regarding the controls and lack of knobs and real buttons. Is it bad as so many make it out to be, or does it just take a day or three to get used to it?
The MK8 R is great to drive but unfortunately the infotainment is not the best and takes a lot of getting used to. I would say if the infotainment is quite a high priority for yourself a used MK7 R is still a great car to go for. I do plan on doing a video shortly around the controls / lack of buttons and the overall usability of the MK8 Golf 👍
Keep the order. Picked mine up 2 weeks ago in white with dsg In Ohio. I only use a handful of functions, windows usually down, same 5 sirius stations and the r button makes switching drive modes easy. The stop start is kind of a pain to turn off initially because the screen upon starting is slow. 100 miles into the 1k break in, it’s killing me
@@OneTwoThreePunch Thanks for the reply, and glad you’re enjoying it. I did end up canceling the R and ordered a 2022 BMW M240i back in January. Just picked it up about a week ago. Be safe!

Sam, this is genuinely my favourite MK8 R video so far. Your excitement and passion is fantastic and it’s great to see you having this experience. I hope this really boosts your channel like you deserve. You should do another video soon where you’ve collected your thoughts. Also, when are you ordering one? Edit - “it’s got auto hold!” 😂😂😂😂
Thank you for the positive feedback and supporting the channel! It was a great day and I am really happy that others have enjoyed the video! I have a few more clips from the day which I have not shared as yet so I plan to do a follow up video this weekend on that 😁
@@SamAustin I am waiting for my R and i did some research i think UK spec cars have R logo on keys and EU German spec has Vw logo i will know for certen next week when my car gets here.
Next time put the window down so we can see if they go all the way down. Also when you show something on camera hold it stationary for 2 second so we can see it.
Ride quality felt really good to me! Firm but nothing that would get too annoying. Fundamentally its still a Golf so you get all the usual Golf benefits. I've only driven an M140i and an M2 on the BMW front so I am not sure which BMW you want me to compare this too. I felt the M140i was too soft personally and the M2 was far firmer. If you get the Golf 8 R without the PP, so 18" wheels, along with adding DCC the car will be just as comfortable as any standard Golf IMHO. Great car...........you will have no regrets as long as it is in your budget 👍
In the 7, when cornering hard, the car would initially push/understeer momentarily before power was transferred to the rear. Did you notice that happening in the 8 or is the AWD system improved?
It felt a bit more natural in the 8R. I know what you mean in the corners, particularly slower corners, and the 7R kinda artificially fires you out. Its similar still to that in the 8R but it did feel like a nice improvement but I would not say it was drastically different in normal day to day road driving.
Great Vid Sam 👍 Been waiting to see a white example with the 19” Estoril wheels as that is what I have ordered! 😅 Will be trading up my MK7.5 R in August when the new car arrives 👌
Thank you for the positive feedback! I am glad the video had helped you out. It's a cracking car from first impressions so I am sure you will enjoy it particularly if you liked your MK7.5 R 👍
Autotrader has one of these up there at £59999 right now.. FFS... WTF really.. WOW - what options do you need to go from £40k to £60k - exhaust made from platinum, a gold gear knob - ahh no its auto... :) !!! Not really been in to Golfs being a fast ford fella, but this with the perf pack looks quite nice. The auto boxes do me in... it is the future though. Just like Ricardo (F1) I guess its up to us to evolve and get used to these new cars.
That is incredible! I plan to do an update video shortly around the price of these cars in a future video. Thank you for the comments and the inputs for the channel as I know others find them extremely useful 👍
I would love to try a DCC car in future. It felt great on the road overall without DCC so I can only guess at this stage that the DCC would enhance things but I would have to try one to be sure 👍
DCC is the most important and useful option. Performance pack is more about show rather than day to day usefulness. 168 mph! Drift mode! I have an 8r on order. Blue, DCC, heated seats and Harmon Kardon hi-fi. Money well spent.
@@paulgoode9362 I agree I decided to take off the r performance pack and purchased the aprok exhaust, DCC, 19 inch est alloys, heads up display, winter pack, park assist, black Pearl, pan roof. Purchased through carwow and saved myself quite a bit!
I have found a lot of the modern auto boxes have an element of slow shift and this soft-limiter as they refer to it, why??? I tested a M135i recently OMG really poor. BMWs 1st FWD bias car (AWD allaying a 50/50 split of power to front an drear) but the shift change is either all or nothing, the only way to make it go is to floor your right foot and wait that moment for the kickback... I do feel that a purist hot hatch new to be manual - man or woman and machine working together, these autos just point the wheel (although with lane assist and all the gadgets even this is partly removed) and then floor the right foot and let the car manage the changes - what part of actual driving is left.... And when we get to driverless cars - wtf are we going to do then - apparently we shouldn't enjoy ourselves or have fun driving - its purely a pastime of commuting..
If the mk8 R gets rid of all the understeer from the mk7 I may swing for it especially if it comes out on top for handling and steering feel compared to the civic type r
I think with the new haldex system it understeers way less because it shifts more torque to the rear wheels to push you round the corner. If you watch any of the proper reviews of this car they’ll talk about those kind of things.
Hard to tell at road speeds you would really need to try the car on track to tell. I really enjoyed the way the car drove on the day, and I am still gathering my thoughts in comparing it to my 7R, but I would always recommend a test drive to see if it suits yourself and whether or not it is an improvement from the MK7. 👍
Thank you for the positive feedback! I would go white as I like how it blends with the blue calipers and the blue led light bar at the front. It also works well with the gloss black parts on the car. On a black car I can imagine these details get lost a bit 🤔
It's a new regulation I believe. Something about the wheel cannot be a certain distance wide from the arch so to get around this manufacturers add the plastic bit on the arch to increase the width. It's a weird one but I think that's the reason......we had a chat about it on the day and it's not too bad on the looks front as it's quite small 👍
They are some sort of splash gaurd, they only come with cars spec'd with 19 inch rims as they have more negative offset than the 17 or 18's making them sit more flush with the arches. Edit: actually i think the 19" rim is wider anyway.
A right so it’s only if the car has 19” alloys they have that black trim on arch. My car is brand new too and has not got them. But my car has only 18” alloys.
Both great cars! Depends if your prefer 4wd or FWD as that's the key difference between the two.....although this 4wd car can drift aswell if you fancy that 😅
@@SamAustin never driven 4WD before so that would be a big change but I'd consider that a good one and its the main selling point for me. However even tho its not for everyone, I absolutely adore the looks of Type R 😂
17:00 WTF!! 😎 . . .wow Sam so pleased for you to be given this opportunity, you deserve it mate - look forward to future content on the Golf 8R - apart from the obvious step up in performance, would be interested to hear your thoughts on the DSG gearbox and driver engagement compared with the manual of the Mk7/7.5. . . .
Hi sam , How kind of that person to lend you his car for this special video and special it is . I could see sam you were totally thrilled by this experience and yes what a car the mk 8 R is. Sam I'm thankfully coming to the end of my pcp policy in june and how very very tempting this new car is. Would love to see you do anther video similar to this as I really enjoyed it and you certainly made me chuckle a few times, just remember to drink your hot chocolate next time ! Best regards Paul 👍
I completely forgot about the hot chocolate! I'll remember to drink it next time I meet up with the owners their.....I think I was taken back a bit to get the opportunity as I did not expect it 🙂
Great video! If you were a bit more familiar with the dsg manual mode, trust me, you’d have known the tricks on how to use it to make it faster😉 like downshift a split second AFTER pinning the throttle... car takes off immediately. My ‘19 mk7.5r dsg makes loud woosh’s from the intake aswell. Is it not as noticeable on the manuals? Can’t wait for my mk8r to come circa July. White, performance, black estoril alloys, black mirror caps, 90% rear window tint😁
Thank you for the positive feedback! For sure I spend most of the time driving manuals. My only experience in autos would have been on track with a PDK or in a DB11 (video on my channel on that). The DSG worked really well in auto but like you say I think I would have to learn the characteristics of manual mode a bit more. Honestly other than a pops from the exhaust I've never heard the wooshing noise like that in my MK7 R so I wonder if it might be a manual thing. Many congrats on your order......the owner here had his rears tinted separately after picking the car up and it looked like a 100% tint 😅
But it would give it a distinctive sound and also bring the power to right below 400; what’s gonna happen when the next gen sti, and civic type r have that kind of power; there’s only so much power you can squeeze out of that 2.0 tsi... I’m only wishing for it because I dream of having a 5 cylinder turbo, awd manual; and btw if you look it up, vw had the same idea but Audi said no, worrying it would affect rs3 sales. Which is bull people buying the 2 cars are total different demographics.
@@brightsydebill8410 It wouldn’t give it a distinctive sound, it would give it an Audi sound. The EA888 is capable of 400bhp easy and VW know that, the new 8R has already dyno’d at 340bhp stock. They’ll face lift the 8R once over its lifetime, probably bump the power up as far as they’re willing to go and then that’ll be it for that engine, the next Golfs will be electric. VW have stated that they’re not developing any new ice’s as well. Same goes for Audi’s 5 cylinder. The upcoming new RS3, TT RS, RSQ3 and Cupra Forementer will be the last time we see that engine. I know that VW wanted to try the 5cyl in the Golf, but it would also make it close to the same price as the RS3 so you would have the same demographic buying both and the only difference would be the styling and interior which would mean that everyone would continue buying the RS3 as it has a far better interior. If you want a Audi, manual 5 cylinder turbo, buy an Audi.
@@jryalls I would buy a Ttrs or rs3 but the lack of a manual kills it for me, same reason I wouldn’t consider the new Supra, I rather have a slower more engaging car to drive with also a nice engine note. And no offense to the current golf r platform; that engine to me just sounds too “normal” besides of the pops and bangs which I also am not a fan of, I just hope Audi considers allowing vw to use it as a last hoorah before the engine is killed off, I’d pay 50k for a 5 cylinder golf r, some wouldn’t but I would. I can tell you know what you’re talking about though.
Thanks for the feedback! Leather seats are an option and they do look great but yes as standard its cloth only.....the S3 will give you leather as standard if the seats are big point. Agreed 40K is madness but discounts will soon be available on used ones 👍
Well done Sam. Lovely fast car isn't it, you don't really no how lovely till you see feel nd drive one! getting mine in September. I recommend carwow for a good deal if your in the market

Love your enthusiasm mate. The Mk8 Golf R isn’t even out yet in NZ and you’ve made me want to buy one! I own a mk7.5 R - do you think the Mk8 is a big step up?
Thank you! It does feel familiar to the 7R but compared to mine I preferred things in the 8R like the seats, seating position, steering wheel, power, handling and I am sure once you get used to the tech that is a huge modern step on. I would have to drive it a few more times to really get a feel for the car. Ill have to gather my thoughts and share this in a future video. I would say test drive one when you can...........its a mega car! 👍

@@richardsealey3626 Does that apply to the mk8 only, as I can assure you as an owner of mk7&7.5both with or without DCC, running 19" then for me the difference was tangible .
@@richardsealey3626 Thanks for your comments. Guess the road surface conditions in Germany are better than the 80% of currently very potholed roads. Enjoy your Golf R driving as I do.👍🤞
@@richardsealey3626 I would disagree with you there, coming from driving mk7 GTI and the Polo GTI, both with firm fixed suspension. The roads around here vary from horrible to great new B-roads. The ability to have the suspension adapt with the driving profile is must for me. Though I do agree 'most' might just have the individual profile setup and not change it, I swap profiles a lot. The sound system part is a difference story, I rarely ever listen to anything whilst driving so not sure how much use I will get out of the stereo. I take your word for it considering you have test driven the MK8 R. Looking forward to mine arriving, it does have DCC in this case.
Did you know the new Golf R will be available with a manual transmission in the U.S. / Canada when they arrive here? I can't believe they won't offer the manual for you in the U.K. What gives? I would never buy an automatic - manual for life !
I did here this! It's good news to have the option in a cool hot hatch like this! 90% of people in the UK went DSG so VW just gave up with it......I think in the US it was 60/40 so they gave the option of both. It will be interesting to hear what it is like even if it is from far away over here in the UK 👍
Good video bro, 👍,i have seen a few golf 8 R with black stripe all the way across the front instead of the blue stripe and also the headlights are a bit darker than this one , is it an option or something?
Thanks man! Erm I havent heard of that as being an option. Even on this car the owner has tinted the rear windows more than factory standard. It's likely the ones you have seen may have been modified but I cant be sure on that one 🤔
Sadly the black pack isn’t available in the UK currently but is an option in other countries. Also the wheels come in black. I’ll be changing the mirror caps to gloss black on mine.

Great video Sam. Happy to see you finally get a chance to drive the MRK8. Would much rather watch you than someone like Archie Hamilton, who has just purchased the MK8 R for views and will soon sell it.
Thanks Sam and thanks to your subscriber for the opportunity to see and drive the car. Most UK stock seems to be standard spec cars, as are most reviews, so it was nice to check out the Performance Pack.
Thanks for the review. I test drove one a few days ago in same spec, as we're looking to replace our RS3 - hmmm... interior is low rent for a car at this price point and the switchgear is really poor. Externally, I can't see what all the fuss is about - the GTI looks way better and blue callipers - not for me, red looks better. Sound wise, not great in my opinion - needs the Akrapovic option. Performance was good, but getting back into our RS3, I soon realised the Golf is in a league below my current car. I'm out - the missis thought it was boring to look at (I kind of agree), it's cheap inside and it's expensive for what it is. I would still however take it over the new S3, which I have also driven. That was ugly and frankly, just dull as ditch water to drive. So, I have now driven the AMG A45S and yep, order placed. It's got massive character compared to the boring Golf, is a lot quicker, interior is amazing and it looks/feels special. OK, it is £57k but when you do the math, on a PCP deal I took, it wasn't much more than the Golf to finance. VWFS aren't exactly giving good rates on the 8R. My TPW anyway - nice hot hatch, a bit boring, cheap interior and over-priced.
Congrats on your A45S! I'd keep an eye out for the new RS3 as it will likely have a similar chassis setup to the 8R but with a 5 cylinder engine and a fair bit more power 👍
I’ve just ordered a golf r PP with pan roof and adaptive dampers in white and I’m quiet happy to keep my near 20k in my pocket ;) and if we ever meet on the road or track you’d need to take your to the absolute limit to leave me behind hahahaha
Many congrats on your new 8R! You will enjoy it for sure it's a cracking car! I'll leave yourself and Luke with your own film but thank you for the offer and enjoy your collection day 👍
Yea it’s mad. Still think I’d prefer the R over the S3, would need to drive both, which is difficult here in Ireland. Test drove a Clubsport, that was quite nice, although it was dry, not sure on a greasy wet road
It’s strange. A big foot in mouth moment from VAG in my opinion. If you wanted a Golf R in the past but wanted a nicer interior you paid a bit more but bought an S3 as they were pretty much the same car. But now that the Golf has the upgraded fancy haldex system it’s more performance oriented than the new S3, maybe Audi are trying to get people to order the RS3 instead.
Your dream model? You have the better looking car already jeez dude. This 8th version is an abomination. I myself am looking at the audi S3, looks way better, and i have a MK7 GTI clubsport now....

Now that you mention it, pity about lack of R kickplates.
My 2019 has them and I like :)

Sam can u tell me what kind of key golf R has i saw some reviews with normal VW logo and others with R logo why is that ?
Hey, Its the same Key as I show in this video early on. I have not seen any different from any of the MK8 R's I have driven personally 👍

Next time put the window down so we can see if they go all the way down. Also when you show something on camera hold it stationary for 2 second so we can see it.
🤣
I was holding onto buying a golf r and haven’t test drove one just yet but how would you compare ride quality with the likes of a bmw?
Ride quality felt really good to me! Firm but nothing that would get too annoying. Fundamentally its still a Golf so you get all the usual Golf benefits. I've only driven an M140i and an M2 on the BMW front so I am not sure which BMW you want me to compare this too. I felt the M140i was too soft personally and the M2 was far firmer. If you get the Golf 8 R without the PP, so 18" wheels, along with adding DCC the car will be just as comfortable as any standard Golf IMHO. Great car...........you will have no regrets as long as it is in your budget 👍
Passenger door looks to be a different colour. Been sprayed
@@SamAustin Thanks for the response. It's been so hard to find anyone talking about how the car performs at the limit.
Very hapticky
Great Vid Sam 👍 Been waiting to see a white example with the 19” Estoril wheels as that is what I have ordered! 😅
Will be trading up my MK7.5 R in August when the new car arrives 👌
Thank you for the positive feedback! I am glad the video had helped you out. It's a cracking car from first impressions so I am sure you will enjoy it particularly if you liked your MK7.5 R 👍
Nice Road Test.
Thank you! 👍
Huge pity to go for performance pack but not DCC

Thanks for the video Sam well done. I thought just maybe, you would break out the driving gloves for this drive :)
Thanks Meg for supporting the channel! Haha - racing gloves maybe 🙂
Great vid Sam, I’m in the process of ordering one, would you go white or black? Thanks
Thank you for the positive feedback! I would go white as I like how it blends with the blue calipers and the blue led light bar at the front. It also works well with the gloss black parts on the car. On a black car I can imagine these details get lost a bit 🤔
@@SamAustin Thanks for the reply. I’ve had similar thoughts about losing the gloss black detail, and it’ll save me £635!

gratz on finally getting behind the wheel of the new golf,
Many Thanks! Really happy to be able to share it with you all 👍
What are the black bits on the wheel arches my golf R does not have that on it??
It's a new regulation I believe. Something about the wheel cannot be a certain distance wide from the arch so to get around this manufacturers add the plastic bit on the arch to increase the width. It's a weird one but I think that's the reason......we had a chat about it on the day and it's not too bad on the looks front as it's quite small 👍
Does yours have the 19 inches alloys wheel? I think you will get those wheel arches if you got the 19 inches.
@@SamAustin it's an MOT fail if a wheel sticks out past an arch. So the plastic piece must be the way around it.
Still debating between getting a Civic Type R at the end of this year or wait an extra year and getting a mk8 Golf R at the end of next year 🤷♂️
Both great cars!
17:00 WTF!! 😎 . . .wow Sam so pleased for you to be given this opportunity, you deserve it mate - look forward to future content on the Golf 8R - apart from the obvious step up in performance, would be interested to hear your thoughts on the DSG gearbox and driver engagement compared with the manual of the Mk7/7.5. . . .

Hi sam ,
How kind of that person to lend you his car for this special video and special it is .
I could see sam you were totally thrilled by this experience and yes what a car the mk 8 R is.
Sam I'm thankfully coming to the end of my pcp policy in june and how very very tempting this new car is.

I completely forgot about the hot chocolate! I'll remember to drink it next time I meet up with the owners their.....I think I was taken back a bit to get the opportunity as I did not expect it 🙂
Bravo! I was waiting for your official review for quite some time.
Thank you! I am so happy I had the opportunity to share it with you all and that the footage seems to have gone down really well with everyone 👍
Can’t wait to see the manual one in action here in the states, might consider it, love the interior, wish Audi allowed Vw to use the rs3 motor
Yes really interested to hear how you find the manual over in the states! Ah we can only dream about that 5 cylinder being in the R I feel......🤩
The 5 cylinder makes the front end heavier and increases understeer.
Good review and nice car but 40k and I doesn’t have leather seats the standard seats look so cheap
Thanks for the feedback! Leather seats are an option and they do look great but yes as standard its cloth only.....the S3 will give you leather as standard if the seats are big point. Agreed 40K is madness but discounts will soon be available on used ones 👍
is mk8 R available in manual? eagerly waiting for sale in Canada later this year.
It is available in north America I believe with a manual. The only difference is that the torque is limited a bit compared to the DSG

Thanks Sam and thanks to your subscriber for the opportunity to see and drive the car. Most UK stock seems to be standard spec cars, as are most reviews, so it was nice to check out the Performance Pack.

I haven't specd the pp, do want that spoiler though!
peter pan, show us the road next time NOT your face.
You could do Spiderman also.
Theres a camera pointing forwards for the entire drive and a walkaround of the car in this video👍

Everything is nice apart from the front end.. such a shame. Looks lizard like
In Ireland the Golf R list price is €62,410 while to S3 is €55,521. WTF!!!!! Deffo won't be buying the R. S3 in Ireland makes a lot more sense.
Wow that is a big cost difference! A real surprise VW have not made the 8R more affordable in comparison to the S3 🤔
@@jryalls good observation, I think you’re right.
@@user-xl7yf7pc7k They’ve probably also reduced the price of the S3 to bring it in line with the A35 and M135i too. As they’re both about £35,000.
