I have a friend who is in a band that plays in various bars. She said that the crowd just lights up when they play this tune. Everyone sings. She said it's really unbelievable.
Twins, they are twin brothers. This song was a huge hit in the early 90s. I still hear it played in stores sometimes. It is catchy and we all sing :and I will walk 500 miles and I will walk 500 more..."
I don't believe this song would be problematic today. It's about a man telling the person he's devoted to how much he loves them by saying all of the things he would do, the challenges he would overcome just to spend time with that person. It's a catchy song about a man who wants to let someone know how much he cares about them. Why would that be a problem? I love The Proclaimers and one of the things I love about them is that they sing with their Scottish accent. This is a great sing-along song if you're at your local pub or bar or beer joint whatever you prefer to call it. It was on my playlist for long road trips. It's a fun sing-along in the car song.
They are identical twins. It wasn't a hit (other than in New Zealand and Australia) in 1989. It was used in the movie Benny & Joon in 1993 and only then became a huge hit internationally. Mary Stewart Masterson was a fan of the song and played it on the set while making the movie and the producers decided to use it in the film.
Scottish twins Craig & Charlie Reid wrote & had a huge hit with this song - it's one of my favourites! There is a live video of them singing this at the Edinburgh festival with an enormous audience singing along - it's absolutely riveting to watch. Is the idea of deep, lasting love so utterly alien now? How sad . .
Yodeling or lilting around non-lexical vocables like "tra la la las" and the like. The Proclaimers were reclaimers of folk rock trailing after the Waterboys release of "Fisherman's Blues" but before the unplugged movement hit MTV in the nineties. Also check out The Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", and "Gone Daddy Gone".
I always love when I hear this song come on. Also I directly put it on because I love it and sang along while I did some household chores before I go do my work. I play lots of music I love as background music it is not an insult it means it is so beautiful it just works right in with whatever I am doing.
From Auchtermuchty, you should watch them play here and the crowd. On a separate note, the beer advert with Jonny Miller visiting Auchtermuchty, fucking brilliant.
Can I ask you a question? You may not know the answer, but I certainly don’t, and can’t find it anywhere. Once, back in 2015, I was on a cruise on the Queen Mary 2, and in the ballroom the band played this song. An elderly British woman, who was slightly drunk, got so offended by this song that she requested the band not play it again, and when that didn’t work, she even tried to complain to the ship’s upper levels of administration. When I asked her what was wrong with it, she blurted out that she spends too much money to go on a vacation only to have the bands playing political stuff. I never ever heard anything about this song being political, but I’m from the US. Was it politically significant for some reason? Or was she just drunk?
@SavingHistory Thanks for asking, and honestly, I can't speak on what a drunk British lass was thinking (decades of harsh lessons learned), but I'll certainly give my thoughts. I'm assuming the lass was English, correct me if I'm wrong. The song is popular in Scotland (funnily enough), used at Hampden (Scotlands national football stadium), and happily sung by The Tartan Army (Scottish fan's of the national team) but I doubt that was her main objection. In 2014, Scotland voted in a referendum to leave the UK or Remain in The Treaty of the Union which we have been since 1707. 84.6% of eligible Scots voted, a huge turnout, with 55.3% voting No to independence. I think this might have been her objection. Also, some Scots think this should be the national anthem, yet Flower of Scotland, our anthem, speaks of defeating the English and sending them home, tae think again. Would she have gone overboard were that to be played I wonder. God Save The King is the English but also British anthem and many English think Jerusalem should be their individual anthem. Fair play, great song. To answer, I don't know. Those are some thoughts. I'm a proud Scot and a proud Brit, no group of nations in human history have had such and positive impact on Our World, inventions, science, medicine, physics, democracy, literature, music, comedy, and on...... I'm a tad sauced so I don't want to ramble on too much but that lass sounds like quite a tnuc so fuck her and her opinionated shite. Be well, everyone else too, happy festive period, cheers 🍻
@@pauldryburgh6346 Very interesting! And thank you for responding. My guess is it was political in some subtle way for this woman related to the 2014 referendum, which is why, as an American, I wasn’t aware of it? But I’m only guessing. I am not Scottish (obviously) but of Scottish descent (Urquhart), with my family tree traced back to Conachar Mor. And on that same trip in 2015, I finally got to put my feet on Scottish soil, in Oban - where I got a nice tattoo to mark the occasion (just a thistle)! Heheh! Again thank you for your response!
@SavingHistory Thank you for responding too. Glad you were able to come back home. Not 'just' a Thistle, that's our national anthem, Flower of Scotland but of course you'll be well aware. Can I ask how your trip on the vessel was? Apart from the pish talking slapper experience. I'm also intrigued as to your thoughts on US politics currently, should you wish to share. We've went tits up here with Starmer, Scotland votes next year on our devolved parliament, The SNP have been disastrous but I respect democracy so I'll always accept the vote. I did vote against independence in 2014 and for Brexit in 2016 so some success. Anyhoo, rambling again, single malt will do that eh. Be well 🍻
@@pauldryburgh6346 I don’t actually pay too much attention to the politics anymore. It’s just become reality TV around here. The news says “this group is bad” and the internet says “that group is bad,” but when I leave it and live my life in the real world, I see little evidence of the division presented on our screens. But it could be me. I’m fascinated with history - especially ancient history, and how history always repeats itself, or at least rhymes. So it’s hard for me to see current events as anything other than just the next rollover in this endless cycle LOL.
The lads are brilliant. Take a listen to their cover of King of the Road, or their original, Letter From America or Sunshine On Leith. They are real talents.
I listen to the Hogmanay Show every New Years Eve and this is always played as the first song of the New Year (after the audience sings Auld Lang Syne, of course).
This whole album was good. I got it at the time. A friend of mine brought me to a little club in Boston where we watched them play, when they first came to America. They were practically standing right in front of us. I think it was just the two brothers (from Scotland), and then during a certain song or two, a third guy came out from the back room to play his part on the violin. They were so strong, to put out that much good music from just two guys for the most part, that night. We went to see them a second time, and I think the size of the band had increased, and they were up on a stage, more distant. I remember the reviews said the band was "electric". It was true!

Not persistence. Devotion. He already has the girls. The song is a modern take on so many traditional English folk love songs, but enhanced by a few purely Scots words. I saw you bobing along by the time you were halfway through it.
More like a 60s song in sound and look IMO.... I would have totally guess it was the 60s and not 89 and more a hit in 93 from the movie. Of course there were a couple Irish type groups/songs that were somewhat hits into the 90s and used for St Patrick's day play that this song and group has that sound also.
Every Scot in the world knows this song. The brothers are a treasure of Scotland!

Haha! I was waiting for you to notice they were carbon copies of each other. They are indeed twin brothers.
And if you ever get tired of listening to the song, don't worry, it always comes around again!
We were too cool for this song when it came out, now it just makes me smile. Good one you for reacting to it 😂
Oh wow this is from the movie Benny and Joon with Johnny Depp in it
You would have to watch the movie Benny and Joon in order to understand this song❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just love fun music!! peace and love from Canada ❤

It blasted in the US!
I love this song.
Maybe they look similar because they’re twins.
The Swedish band Lars Vegas Trio has made a great cover of this song.
Haha, now you need to do another 500 miles song from the 70's. Bobby Bare - 500 Miles Away From Home
Okay I just sent you a link of the movie Benny and Joon with the soundtrack 500 miles
