He, Jennifer Higdon, Jerod Tate, and Caroline Shaw are my favorite living American composers :) Omg I did the Schaum piano courses. They really are for very, very, very basic and don’t prepare you for being an actual pianist.
I agree with his comment about composition being an activity done by someone who simply can't exist without it. I disagree with him saying composition cannot be taught. I've gotten into music at an older age, and I've learned a lot from other people's methods. Each person has his or her own creativity, but he or she must have knowledge about music. Composition lessons/music lessons allow a person to put his or her creativity to use. It's a never ending process, but saying composition cannot be taught is just wrong to me.
This is a never ending debate. I like to believe he meant, and the statement itself means, that you can be taught different variety of compositional techniques and analysis, theory etc. but not the composing itself. Good composer can give you tools to work with (wich are essential), but if you don't have the composing in you, you are most likely not going to be great. Knowledge in composing technique makes you skillful, but not good or great.
I believe he is merely recognizing the fact that people can surely be taught the tools and techniques of art...but no one can give you your own voice, the soul of a work. The same goes for painting or any creative endeavor. I can teach a hundred painting students color theory and how to hold the brush properly. Given enough study, many of them could produce superficially competent work... but it's up to them to have any depth or have something very personal to say. In other words, the most important part cannot be taught. Everyone from Leonardo da Vinci to Goya said the same thing in various words.
This man is my hero! Thanks so much for the interview!!!
Thanks for watching, Luis Quiroz Galvez!

Is that Darth Vader in the corner behind Zsolt?

I died inside when he dead named Wendy Carlos.
A composer writes music., whereas a songwriter writes songs. A song is sung.
That’s why his name is Liederman. Lieder = song in german
If you are a great musician, you can sing through any instrument
