    A common problem on these is the lubrication of the pivot on the back tension band, a drop of oil is often all they need to prevent tape chewing. While the DA88 decks are not particularly valuable, the 24 bit version DA-98HR can fetch much more because they are needed for recovery of 24 bit recordings. I have both of these plus the Alesis ADAT type II (20 bit) decks. There's also an interface which allows for connecting the ADAT HD24 hard disk recorder to the DTRS DA88/DA98 decks, so all 8 tracks can be captured digitally in one pass, maintaining synchronisation between channels.

      That was done. Just wasn't shown on this one. Either was taking the plate off a second time to free up the trapped back tension band. I'll show that on the second one

    I had four DA-98's sync'd together for 32 track recording at the CBC for a few gigs. DA's were great machines when they worked but you never knew when they were going to fail unexpectedly. At least the 98's had confirmation heads. We went to hard drive digital recording as soon as it was possible. RADAR 24 were great standalone hard-drive systems which sounded great. We also had a few ALEXIS VHS 8 track ADAT recorders that we experimented with before the DA-88 and 98's. Pro-Tools (for drama) and Soundscape (drama and documentary) units became the primary digital in studio recording units except for classical recordings where Pyramix became the primary after a Sonic Solutions system was retired. DAT tapes were the storage medium for computer assisted mixes until CDR became affordable, although most producers also ran an analog tape at the same time as the Dat was recorded. We also had some Sony Dat to Dat editing systems which were primarily used for classical music editing before the hard drive systems.

    I remember these and the later DA-98s being used for TV production for audio deliverables of international versions. The track layout I remember went something like 1&2 Stereo Final Mix 3&4 Stereo M&E (or more often mix minus narration), then the remaining tracks were used for isolated stereo music, isolated stereo effects and track 7 was isolated mono narration with 8 often left blank. That interface box might be the one that provides balanced XLR audio in and out from the multi-connector on the back.
    These also had a propriety digital interface, I think it was called TDIF (Tascam Digital Interface) it'll be another one of the multi-connectors on the back. There was some setting in the menu to change the sync mode depending if you were using digital or analog outputs to keep the timecode in sync, as these could "chase" timecode coming in from a VTR. Did you spot the format button? I think you had to format tapes before you could use them laying down timecode etc. I think they can only use Metal Particle tapes and not Metal Evaporated (or maybe it was those Sony professional Hi-8 tapes it didn't like in the evaporated version!)

    16:40 - If there's too much oil in the crankcase, the crankshaft may end up splashing it around, which causes some power loss due to the drag, and frothing up; also oil may get into the cylinder through the crankcase breathing system, so in extreme cases it can cause hydrolocking and catastrophic failure.
    19:00 - The Titan submarine imploded; the hydrophone system of the navy heard the sonar signals of an implosion around the time the surface boat lost contact with the sub; later they found pieces of it near the remains of Titanic. Until that point they had to search for survivors as per the mandated procedure.

      I said that as soon as i heard that it was missing. One of my neighbourhood residents has been down on it twice. Must me nice to have a half million to burn, he can give me half million any time. He was all over the news a few times talking about how they can drop sand bags and surface and how safe he felt on his 2 voyages down. Haven't heard a peep out of him on the tv since. I knew it imploded as did everyone else. It was the company and media that was string everyone along. That report or hearing tapping like someone was trying to signal is the one that bothered me the most. Even James Cameron the director of Titanic said it was a bad design. He sent an unmanned rov to shoot pictures of the Titanic. What does that tell you. He didn't trust it.

    If you just want a Tascam 8 track deck for basic recording, get a DA38. The 38 and the 98 had superior converters compared to the converters on the 88, which were known to produce "chattering" interference once audio hit a certain volume level. The old Tascam DA30 DAT did the same thing; it was resolved in the MKII version.

      Here In Australia, we pay too much for the same gear and therefor, generally speaking the overall quality of the second hand gear out there is lower and more scarce.. that demands higher prices, especially when a high end model comes on the market

    • @mrnmrn1
      @mrnmrn1 Год назад

      @@tacofortgens3471 They can be extremely valuable, and that will just increase over time. The reason: archival of old master tapes. If someone will find a well known artist's lost master recordings decades from now, they might pay the value of a new car to get a working deck to play them back and archive. The tapes themselves can be played back for many decades - if they were stored right, and if they don't contain problematic tape stock, like those early '90s Sony MP Hi8 tapes that Dave always complains about. And practically all ME Hi8 tapes are problematic. They won't become sticky like a bad MP tape, but they can develop a lot of dropouts over time, and the tape can wrinkle longitudinally.

    Off this topic...would like if you one day have some spare time to explain to us the diff between 720i and 720p. And why if one capture video from old tape the actual frame size is 768x576 and not 720x576. And does upscaling really improve video quality or does it only increase the size of the actual pixels. To my knowledge on HD the data rate is much higher and to upscale an old captured video...where does they claim to get to a higher data rate. Will appreciate if you can share your knowledge with us.

    • @KoelAnderson

      The ‘ i ‘ and ‘ p ‘ tell you the main differences. Interlaced vs progressive scan. Progressive is ‘better’ generally. Quick google or RUclips can give you more info

    • @mrnmrn1
      @mrnmrn1 Год назад

      Simple upscaling won't give you extra detail. But AI upscale can do wonders, if the source is good quality. *BUT* if you want to upload any PAL video to RUclips, it's well worth a simple upscale to 720p, because with the standard 480p SD resolution of RUclips, you will loose ~100 lines of resolution horizontally and vertically. The main issue is the loss of vertical resolution, because none of the home video formats were capable of reproducing the full horizontal resolution of the PAL standard anyway.
      On top of that, nowadays YT processes SD videos like crap, they look awfully overcompressed. Probably it also depends on *who* uploads them. If it's a well-known youtuber with 100k+ subscribers, they might process it better, with less compression... Safer to upload it in 720p, it will look better.

      No not an engine problem. A valve in a coolant line for the cabin heater but because that valve us not opening or closing (or are least signaling ur is moving) it is throwing a code which the computer is then restricting how much regenerative braking us permitted. My old volt is over 12 years old close to 200000km not a wrench has touched it. Software updates a few times under warranty and a few sets of tires. This one has like 40000 miles on it and this is the 3vtine it has been in the shop in 4 years. Once was fir the FM radio reception and it is still the shits. I have given up on that one because they won't fix it because i installed a ham radio in the car and they claim that is why the radio reception is bad. It isn't but gm used that as an excuse to void the radio warranty. Don't get me wrong i love the car. What is not to live about a car that van go anywhere without having to sit around at a charge station when traveling and yet when not doing long trips can have a tank of gas last a year but be there when needed. No other car can do that. The current crop of plug in cars can do that. They all use the engine pretty much every time you drive them. The volt was the only one that was pure electric until the battery was empty and then switched to gas.
