• Hyperbolica - Official...
Hyperbolica is a video game in the world of hyperbolic space (and spherical space). Many more details and a whole video series to come, so stay tuned. I've been working on this project for over a year now and it's so great to finally announce it publicly.
Steam Wishlist: store.steampowered.com/app/12...
=== FAQ ===
Q: Does this use your Non-Euclidean Worlds Engine?
A: No, I'm using Unity for this and it's a totally different effect (no portals)
Q: What systems will this be released for?
A: For sure PC/Linux/Mac on Steam, maybe a console if it becomes popular enough.
Q: Will there be a VR version?
A: Yes
Q: Is the game free and/or open source?
A: The game is paid, but the engine will be open source so you can make your own Non-Euclidean games.

Oh yes! I've seen so many 'non-Euclidean' worlds that are really just locally Euclidean with portals, but this looks like proper locally-non-Euclidean goodness. I can't wait to see more.

-the beach line is a equidistant curve to the border of grass and sand
-the path the camera follows at one point looks like a horocircle
-the scene with the barn seems to be in S3
-the ground in the vapor wave area looks like klein Beltrami model of hyperbolic space
Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't noticed that!
klein-beltrami sacrifices visual range for keeping straight lines straight, and you can see plenty of curved lines, I think that's still poincare

Or some sort of equidistant view. But the principle is the same: in curved space, straight lines don't actually appear straight unless you're right on top of them. With positive curvature, they appear to curve towards you with distance; with negative curvature, they appear to curve away from you.
It's sad how no one seems to care about the music. Of course this game looks very interesting, but the music created such an amazing futuristic/experimental vibe to it. Phil K. did an excellent job on this one, I would definitely love to hear the full soundtrack.
I noticed the music, as well. I'm a collector of VG and Electronica, so this is great for me.
The music gives somewhat of a surreal vibe, not kidding.

This is what it feels like playing Minecraft being high.
I can confirm.
"So, how high do you want your FOV to be?"

The game: “No”

Honestly, with the way negitve curvature space works, the answer is more likely to be "no"
@@binarycat1237 Why would that be?
Is it because it's *negative* ?
I'm not sure
@@ultimagnum3511
Because there is a lot more space within the same amount of space.
Or, more precisely, there is a lot more area within a circle of the same radius.
"Yes" would imply you're everywhere on the map. "No" would imply you're nowhere on the map. Of course both options are exaggerations, but "No" is more accurate because locating you on the map is more difficult, because there is so much more _map_ to be in.

I am actually quiet frustrating about this. I had the same idea, I gradually went to it, studied engines, graphics and mathematics. And now all this does not make sense. You overtook me in everything. This is a little annoying, but I am happy for your success. It looks super amazing

Imagine this in VR.
EDIT: OH GOD THAT'S ALREADY PLANNED? Our poor brains...
Very interesting visuals! I hope you'll tell us how you managed to make a hyperbolic perspective system. I've tried to do things very similar to this, (if only visually) by changing the size of the viewport as it got further from the camera. Looking at the footage, I can't tell if you've actually changed the geometry of the space. This also makes me wonder if you'll try elliptical geometry. Visually, elliptical geometry is less interesting, but spatially it gives more opportunities for confounding spaces. Regardless, I find this very exciting. I've always loved non-euclidean games and projects!
ZenoTheRogue has a few things for computing hyperbolic geometry on his blog
If I'm not mistaken, 0:08 - 0:12 and the barn at 0:30 are actually in elliptical space!

I wonder what shape would be best for allowing building... also, question: is the Z Axis hyperbolic, or only just the X and Y axis? That is to ask, is it full on hyperbolic space (on the surface of some sort of hyperbolic sphere) or just a hyperbolic plane?

Euclid was a hack and he has yet to come on my show to refute me.
To be fair technically speaking the universe is not actually euclidic.
As a whole Its flat by common consensus (thogh this has been recently called into question as only being approximately flat by recent hypothesis) but whenever it involves strong gravitational influence it isn't. One example is gravitational lensing caused by massive/dense objects such as stars, galaxies, and black holes making objects behind appear at wared and at a different distance than they are actually are (as in light from the object IS NOT moving in straight lines throu that section of space)
