During the ending acoustic part, the guitar strings are slowly being detuned while it's being played. You can hear the tuning peg squeak a bit at parts. The laugh comes form it being so out of wack he couldn't really play it anymore. It actually rather ingenious.

I believe that in those "aaahh" you spoke about Mikael being an octave above is actually the other guitarist, Fredrik, doing backing vocals. Not sure though... Also, this is my favourite song by Opeth.
therainman I don’t think at this point Fredrik had joined the band yet, but I believe Per Wiberg can pull that off in this case, or may be just mikael.

Such a hidden gem, Opeth although known for their prog death metal, are many sided and not to be boxed in. Songs like this one and To bid you farewell are examples.
my first song i ever heard for Opeth was ending credits :D then closure just sealed the deal , i went through everything after :D the solo at the end first time i heard it, i closed my eyes and connected right into that , barely managed to hold my tears
Amazing solos from both guitarrist and on the hammond. New guitarrist Fredrik really got to show his stuff on the album. I play on his signature strings wich are awesome btw! Ending is twisted good....

Hells yeah. I see you have reacted to a lot of Opeth. But I am not seeing that you have seen there song Hope Leaves yet. Its their most heart wrenching, I think. I have heard he actually wrote it for his grandmother. But who knows if that is true. Regardless, its painful as fuck. For that matter, Isolation Years and Hours of Wealth by Opeth got some deep feels too. Check em out. Oh and one last request. Especially since you are going through some shit right now, personally. I been there. I feel for you. You should definitely check out Woods of Ypres. Trust me, you will feel that shit, particularly the green album and the Grey Skies & Electric Lights album.

The guitars getting slowly out of tune is made intentionally so it can created a psychedelic effect.
