  • Hello Greenies
This is one on Begonia maculata or the Polka dot Begonia. Begonia was named by Linnaeus in honour of a French female horticulturalist called Michel Begon. This plant is said to be indigenous to the Atlantic Forests of Brazil and is loved the world over by indoor or glass house plant collectors, especially in cooler climates.
I show you how to pot up cuttings in this one. Easy, peazy, lemon squeezy!
    Enjoy!
    Keep Gardening
    Gabe

since I live in a subtropical area (southern spain), I realise how much the "textbooks" just lie to us... When I was a kid, we were told for ex. that ficus benjamina should not be placed in front of a south facing window (northen hemisphere), that its cousin elastica was a great shade plant, and so on... now, I have them full sun outside all year round. I also grow outside Pilea cardierei (from your last video), and begonia maculata (both bright indirect sunlight), and they are just fine. in winter, we can go down early morning to 5C, sometimes in summer we spend weeks in the 40C, and they just cope with it. lately, I experimented with aquarium plants: I had them since 2 years now in a pond on my ruff terrace, and even if they slow down during the colder months (some even "die back"), they bounce back and thrive as soon as spring is here. I was unable to grow a few of them in an aquarium (mainly because low tech and lack of "light"), but in the pond, they go mad ;-) what I do now when I don't know a plant (or anything else for that matter), I research their natural habitat, and forget about what they say in textbooks... I do that for everything lately, not just plants.

      Hey Y
I always dig reading you comments because I think that we think similarly when it comes to all things nature.😀 Talk about 40 C! the sun is just setting now and today was a scorcher! This entire week actually. Been watering like a mad man. LOL! But I love it at the same time. No complaints from me.
By the way I totally agree that the textbooks give a good outline but should always be taken with a 'pinch of salt' so to speak.
      Anyway, peace out!
      Gabriel🌱

How long did it take to form roots from time you made the cuttings and put them in water? I’ve had success just putting cutting directly in soil

Hi there Wesley, no more than a week to be honest. It is literally super short. You can also place it in soil although if not careful rotting can easily take place when doing it this way. Some gardeners are heavy handed when it comes to watering if you feel me. lol, this is why I opted for the cuttings in water.

I love your Maculata! You just butchered the word, but it's beautiful.
