Rumble is still heavily restricted by the rules of the game and his own limited animations while Dipper functions on real life physics. Doesn't matter how weak the hit is, anything that so much as brushes Rumble would cause a stun. Dipper could've stunlocked his way to victory.
Dipper could've used his wits to Rumble down by tricking him into slamming into things or tripping him off a cliff or lure him into a lair of a huge monster to finish him off.
Dipper fucking survived that combo, took down the multi-bear, took down the Gideon robot, saved Ford from the spaceship, and literally had the guts to punch a God in his only eye. That manliness tester was total bullshit.
Fun fact: Rumble McSkirmish in the episode of the show was animated by expert pixel artist Paul Robertson. He is a longtime friend of Mariel Cartwright, who is currently known for being the artist and animator of "Skullgirls". (I got the most likes on here ever, holy cow... 😱)
I can only imagine how interesting it must have been to animate Rumble. Like, did they make sprites for animating the character or did they draw most of that?
From my limited understanding, Rumble and one later character were sprites by the great Paul Robertson. He also did the spritework for Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World: The Movie: The Game.
Fun Fact: When Rumble front kicks Dipper at 1:26, the health bar doesn’t show Dipper how much health he lost in terms of percentage, but when Dipper uppercuts Rumble at 1:44, the health bar showed him that Rumble lost (in terms of percentage) 0.5% of his health. This proves the fight’s trolling Dipper by showing him how weak his attacks are in terms of percentage.
Dude Dipper took that beating like a freakin champ. And based on how the second season has been going, he's probably going to be pretty tough by the end of the summer. In both taking it, and dishing it out. Looking forward to more Dipper fight scenes. (also, Mabel needs to get in on that too, she has a pretty good punch)

Yeah, using that punch on a person always works. It worked on Gideon. It also managed to punch a hole through a robots eye so he could beat up Gideon. He tried it on Bill once, no dice but those bullies back home don't stand a chance.

It's all different perspectives. When he got punched, he was knocked down and put in a fall animation. Later on, he's not lying down, he's standing upright along the floor. Very different for a 2-D character.
To be fair, the uppercut dipper threw had a pretty fair amount of damage, mostly because you would usually combo that with other moves. So technically speaking, Dipper can muster up the physical power of a fighting game character.
I kinda feel bad for Rumble. He was just an honest hero trying to be the most honorable fighter he could be and he STILL had his "I've won, but at what cost?" moment

I reeealy wanna get into animation now, but even as a kid when I watched this episode the way Rumble moved AND looked (with the dither pixel shading) always intrigued me before I knew what the concept of animation was! Maybe it helped that he did NOT fit in to the real world at all but I guess that was the whole point 🤔
